Lots of new stuff in 10.2

August 08, 26

YACReader 10.2 is here. This release adds library backup and recovery tools, experimental support for image-based EPUB comics, redesigned settings dialogs, new zoom and magnifying-glass controls, and a basic Web UI reader. It also includes many other improvements and fixes.

Please, check the new built-in guide for the search engine in YACReaderLibrary to learn all what you can do with the search engine, the same syntax can be used in the iOS/Android remote browsers.

YACReader

  • Change the default shortcuts for modifying the magnifying-glass size to avoid conflicts with the page zoom shortcuts: [ and ].
  • Add an optional circular magnifying glass with an optional ring around it. The configured size is preserved when switching between rectangular and circular modes.
  • Add optional edge easing for the magnifying glass. The magnified region is pushed toward the edges of the view, allowing content near the borders to be inspected more easily.
  • Require a full mouse-wheel notch before changing the magnifying-glass size or zoom, preventing light trackpad gestures from resizing it.
  • Fix the go-to-flow bar requesting permission to control the computer on macOS. Moving the cursor into the bar now works without granting accessibility permission.
  • Add a setting to control the Escape key behavior. It can quit the reader as before, or cancel the topmost active mode: magnifying glass, dictionary, go-to-flow, and then fullscreen.
  • Fix a crash caused by changing the reading direction while quickly turning pages.
  • Add support for pinch gestures and Ctrl+mouse wheel to change the zoom level.

YACReaderLibrary

  • Add a library repair function to restore missing covers and rescan files that previously failed to be added.
  • Add actions to create and restore library database backups.
  • Automatically create and retain database backups in .yacreaderlibrary/backups.
  • When database corruption is detected, offer to attempt a repair or restore a backup. Damaged originals are preserved in .yacreaderlibrary/recovery.
  • Fix error handling when importing or exporting comic information and cover packages.
  • Fix the comic information height in grid cells so titles do not overlap other fields.
  • Add an action to open the library root location.
  • Add a built-in guide for the search engine, available from the search field's drop-down menu.
  • Add quick search presets, available from the search field's drop-down menu.
  • Fix Open containing folder requesting permission to control Finder on macOS.
  • Improve the server dialog and add an option to open the Web UI from it.

YACReaderLibraryServer

  • Add the repair-library command to restore missing covers and rescan files that previously failed to be added.
  • Add the backup-library, list-backups, and restore-library commands.
  • Automatically create and retain database backups in .yacreaderlibrary/backups.
  • Add the repair-library-db command to attempt to repair a damaged database. Damaged originals are preserved in .yacreaderlibrary/recovery.

Web UI

  • Add a basic web reader.
  • Add an option to rescan embedded XML metadata.
  • Add more metadata fields to the comic details view.

All GUI apps

  • Add redesigned settings dialogs.

All apps

  • Unify comic sorting across the applications using the string-based universal number.
  • Add experimental support for image-based comics in EPUB format.

YACReader 10.1 is out now!

July 03, 26

A new step forward :) Lots of fixes and some new quality of life features.

YACReader

  • Improve save current page. It includes the comic file name in the default image name and the page number.
  • Add an extract page action. It extracts the original visible pages when image based variants are used. The file name and page number are used as the output.
  • Save the destination path for save/export page between runs.
  • Fix low resolution images generated on save current page.
  • Fix magnifying glass not using the source material.
  • Improve last page detection in continuous scroll mode.
  • Improve What's new dialog to show the full changelog.
  • Improve continuous scroll mode with better performance and less flickering when resizing/loading.
  • Fix reading position being reset to the cover when changing between fit modes.

YACReaderLibrary

  • Fix comics order when opening a comic from YACReaderLibrary.

YACReaderLibraryServer

  • Don't crash at startup if the server can't bind to any address.
  • Redirect / to /webui.
  • New /webui design.
  • Settings regarding metadata and auto-libraries updates can be controlled from /webui/settings.
  • Add a new web content browser to /webui.
  • Add update libraries functionality to /webui.
  • Fix number in various HTTP APIs.

All GUI Apps

  • Better system theme detection.
  • New button in the help dialog for showing the changelog.

All apps

  • Add support for long paths on Windows. This is experimental and only includes library creation and opening files (including the server), other functionality may or may not work with long paths, but the critical aspect of this is the folder structure of the library so overall it is a big win. NOTE: You need to enable long paths support on Windows itself for this to work, HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem -> LongPathsEnabled -> 1.
  • Better PDF rendering that accounts for tall images used in web comics.

I hope you enjoy all the new stuff. As always, let me know any suggestions or problems you may have. Please, if you like YACReader consider to become a patron in Patreon or donate some money using Pay-Pal and help keeping the project alive.

YACReader 10!

May 01, 26

After a lot of work YACReader 10 is finally here. The three main changes are support for themes, Lanczos and continuos scroll. But there are more updates and fixes.

Theming in YACReader 10

Themes support in YACReader 10.

YACReader

  • Add support for continuous scroll mode.
  • Fix the translator.
  • Add Lanczos interpolation for image scaling. You can control the method used via the settings under Image adjustments.
  • Fix hdpi trackpad scrolling when scroll animations are enabled.

YACReaderLibrary

  • Navigating between comics in the metadata editor no longer copies fields from the previous comic into ones that have no value set. To edit shared metadata across multiple comics at once, select them all and use the bulk edit dialog.

All GUI Apps

  • Migrate Flow implementation from OpenGL to QRhi. This is a full new implementation with better performance and compatibility with operating systems and hardware.
  • Add light/dark themes support that follow the system configuration.
  • Add a theme editor and support for custom themes.
  • The apps include 12 built-in themes to pick from.
  • Add an application language setting with a system default option in YACReader and YACReaderLibrary.
  • Fix fullscreen mode in Windows; interaction with the OS is now possible while the apps are in fullscreen.
  • Improve support for multi-screen setups.
  • Fix PDFs with crop information on macOS.

All apps

  • Add support for user-installed Qt image format plugins via the shared plugins/imageformats folder in the YACReader settings directory.

I hope you like it. As always, let me know any suggestions or problems you may have. Please, if you like YACReader consider to become a patron in Patreon or donate some money using Pay-Pal and help keeping the project alive.

YACReader 3.37 for iOS - Live Translation!

April 28, 26

Offline and 100% private Live Translation is here. Now YACReader lets you translate comics in real time. It uses on-device OCR and translation on the current page, with no internet connection required, and lets you configure the language, colors, and font. YACReader can also detect the color of the text and speech bubbles and use the same colors as in the original comic, making the experience as pleasant as possible. This is an experimental feature and depends heavily on image quality. It fully respects your privacy; to use it, you will need to download the dictionaries for the languages you want. Available languages depend on what iOS supports natively.

But there is more...

What's new

  • Live translation while you read. It uses on-device (offline) OCR and translation on the current page, and lets you configure the language, colors, and font. Requires iOS 18+. This is an experimental feature and depends heavily on image quality. It fully respects your privacy; to use it, you will need to download the dictionaries for the languages you want. Supported languages depend on what iOS supports natively.
  • More natural sorting in the local library and search results. Folders are shown first, and comics use their number when available. You can control the behavior in the settings.
  • The QR scanner used to connect to YACReaderLibrary is now native, more reliable, and works better with light-on-dark QR codes, helping support the new themes coming in desktop version 10.
  • Fixed PDF pages with crop areas so only the intended content is rendered.
  • Fixed image filters so they no longer crop pages.
  • Fixed the next comic not being marked as started when finishing the current one.
  • Improved visibility of the close button in the full cover view.
  • Stability improvements.

I hope you like it. As always, let me know any suggestions or problems you may have. Please, if you like YACReader consider to become a patron in Patreon or donate some money using Pay-Pal and help keeping the project alive. And remember that you can get the iOS app here.
