Technology isn’t going anywhere. It’s already woven into everyday life. We need to stop pretending we can turn the clock back and start getting better at teaching people how to live with it and use it properly.

We keep trying to solve a digital literacy problem with more rules. Teach young people how algorithms work. How echo chambers form. How to spot fake news and influence. How to think critically online. Because teenagers will always figure out how to get around the adults.

We’re policing teenagers instead of regulating the billion-pound companies designing platforms to keep them hooked. A “ban” a 17-year-old can switch off isn’t a ban. We need digital literacy, critical thinking, better parenting and proper regulation. Not another pointless rule.

Phones are becoming the convenient villain for much bigger societal problems. Taking them away doesn’t magically teach communication, relationships, resilience or how to engage with the world around you. And building national policy from a short, self-reported experiment?
