“I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good old days before you’ve actually left them.”
Dear Friends,
When I started Citationsy 10 years ago I was a very different person than I am now. I was travelling the world dreaming of moving to London, working on Citationsy every moment I could.
It’s hard to imagine now in the world of AI, but I wrote every single line of code for Citationsy myself.
It didn’t exist, and then I created it.
Still hard to fathom that over half a million students signed up to something I made on my 2011 MacBook!
But Citationsy was not just useful and great for its users, but also for me: It’s where I met amazing colleagues and angel investors, as well as my first time being able to hire a design agency to help bring my vision to life.
One of the things I am proudest of is our 2020 summer interns. We found two wonderful students whose internships had been cancelled due to Covid and spent the summer working with them remotely. I am an even worse boss than I am an employee, but hiring people smarter and harder working than me was such a rewarding experience. They went on to great things, far outshining Citationsy and my own small accomplishments. I am so happy that we gave people who are not traditionally represented in tech a way in.
Some of my fondest memories are working on Citationsy and seeing that work resonate. I remember hitting 10.000 users, then 20.000, and (a big one!) more users than people who lived in the town I went to university in. Another memorable milestone was being able to pay myself a salary from something that I created.
Sitting in a hotel room in Istanbul right after I quit my job, gave up my flat in Stockholm, and decided to go all-in on Citationsy, for someone with no safety net or backup plan it should have been terrifying, but my only memory is of feeling excited.
Finally, Citationsy is what brought me to Korea, where we rather radically pivoted to Sonagi. I now live in London (I finally made it here 4 years ago) and run a Korean skincare company. Who could have predicted that!
So long, and thanks for all the fish.
