Safety Guidelines
In addition to adhering to the Guidelines expressed here, we use our review process to ensure that your Specs experience complies with our Community Guidelines by reviewing the safety and privacy approaches of each applicant. Negative user feedback may also be taken into account in our review.
The following guidelines apply to all experiences built for Specs.
Scope: These guidelines apply to any experience that uses Snap’s services or developer tools for Specs.
- Intellectual Property: Violating the intellectual property rights of others is not allowed.
- Brand Distinction: Your app's name, icon, user interface, and branding must not resemble or imitate Specs or any Specs-owned products. Avoid using names, logos, color schemes, font styles, or design features that might confuse users or suggest sponsorship, endorsement, or affiliation with Snap Inc. Additionally, your app must not impersonate or appear to be an official Snap Inc. product, service, or entity through any design, functionality, or representation.
- Anonymity: Experiences that facilitate communication between users without registered and visible usernames and display names are not permitted. If the identity of a message sender is even temporarily obscured from the message recipient, developers must ensure the experience includes a free and prominent identity reveal function. The free identity reveal option must be of equal size and visibility to any paid alternatives, and any delay for the free option, such as advertisements, must be reasonable.
- Integrity: Never mislead users about the functionalities of your experience. No deceptive content, functionality, design, or terms are permitted. Do not use your experience to promote deceptive content or acts. The use of bots, fake users, fake messages, spam-like marketing tactics, spam, or malware is prohibited. You must not misrepresent when media is being captured, saved, or shared, or create effects that could reasonably cause someone to believe they are not being recorded when they are.
- Minor Safety: Do not target minors under the age of 18, and do not emphasize children in content or experiences. We are especially sensitive to content or experiences that may appear to, even inadvertently, put minors in romantic or sexual scenarios, even if fictional. Specs experiences must not encourage filming minors in ways that humiliate, sexualize, or expose their daily routines or locations, such as schools, homes, playgrounds, or recurring routes.
- Sexual Content: We prohibit sexually suggestive or explicit content or experiences. This includes overtly sexually provocative content, pornography, sexual nudity, sex acts, and references to sexual services, meaning transactional romantic or sexual relationships.
- Dating: Dating or friend-finding services are not allowed unless they are age-gated and restricted to users over 18. These experiences will be subject to providing additional information during the review process. If a dating or friend-finding experience can be used via Specs, you must ensure that first-person capture, such as filming dates or nearby people, does not pressure others into being recorded or shared without their knowledge or consent.
- Harassment: We do not allow content or experiences that can make people feel bullied or harassed. Rating or ranking people based on certain attributes, such as personality, appearance, style, or intelligence, is not allowed. Specs experiences must not enable persistent or anchored labels, scores, or annotations over real people that demean, ridicule, or negatively characterize them.
- Regulated Goods and Services: Do not promote regulated goods or services that could pose health or safety risks. This includes, but is not limited to, alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, weapons, explosives, or substance abuse, including the recreational use of medication. Content that encourages irresponsible behavior, such as binge drinking, is prohibited. We prohibit any gambling activities that involve real money or the purchase of assets that can be exchanged for real money. Simulated gambling applications and games using fake currency are acceptable. Specs experiences must not encourage on-camera use, display, or glorification of these products or activities, such as POV depictions of drug use, weapons handling, or real-money gambling, in ways that would violate Snap’s Community Guidelines or local law.
- Bystander Privacy and Sensitive Locations: You must design experiences that respect bystander privacy. Do not encourage covert recording, stalking, or tracking of specific people, or real-time identification or profiling of bystanders. Experiences must not be designed for use in sensitive locations where people have a higher expectation of privacy, such as bathrooms, locker rooms, medical facilities, schools, or places of worship, or to annotate, label, or share content from those spaces in ways that could cause harm.
- Wearable Physical Safety and Distraction: Specs experiences must not encourage or require use in situations where distraction could cause injury or property damage, such as while driving, cycling in traffic, operating machinery, or performing dangerous stunts. Avoid designs that obscure critical real-world cues, such as stairs, drop-offs, or emergency signage, or that encourage running, jumping, or risky physical challenges in uncontrolled environments.
- Safeguards: Your experience must have adequate safeguards in place to prevent harmful behavior as outlined in our Community Guidelines. You must provide appropriate reporting and blocking tools, clear user-facing safety information, and timely enforcement processes to address abuse, including when abuse occurs through first-person capture or sharing.
- Fair Access and Pricing: Functionality should not be locked behind a purchase or paywall, and there should be no deceptive pricing terms.
- URLs: You may not use URLs, attachments, or other features to direct users outside of the platform without obtaining explicit permission in your application process.
Experiences Containing Potential Safety Issues
All Specs experiences containing user-generated content, social features, first-person capture, recording, live or near-live sharing, or other potential safety issues may receive a questionnaire requiring additional information.
As part of our safety review, we may require additional features such as the ability to report and enforce against content, user-facing contact information, and channels for law enforcement contacts. You must be able to swiftly and effectively handle any concerns raised about user safety on your experience.
