Scopes

Scopes limit what an access token can do in Socket Chief. Choose them when you create an access token. Start with the narrowest scope that covers your integration. The shared scopes guide explains how parent scopes and write access work.

Each endpoint in the REST API reference lists its required scope under security. The same scopes apply to the tools of the MCP server.

Available scopes

Broad scopes

ScopeAccess
socketchiefEvery user-facing Socket Chief API operation
socketchief:readEvery resource read operation
socketchief:writeEvery resource write and read operation

Getting the team and its plan limits works with any Socket Chief read scope.

Applications

ScopeAccess
socketchief:apps:readList and retrieve applications and their settings; app secrets are never returned
socketchief:apps:writeCreate, update, and delete applications and read their credentials, including the app secret; also grants application reads

The apps write scope can read app secrets

The app secret signs Pusher HTTP API requests and channel authorizations, so a token with socketchief:apps:write can let someone publish events to your users. Store it like the secret itself.

Webhooks

ScopeAccess
socketchief:webhooks:readList and retrieve webhooks, including the headers and query parameters sent with each delivery
socketchief:webhooks:writeCreate, update, and delete webhooks; also grants webhook reads

If a webhook header carries a token for your endpoint, socketchief:webhooks:read can read it.

Usage

ScopeAccess
socketchief:usage:readRead live channels, connection counts, and usage statistics of applications

Usage has no write scope.

Scopes are hierarchical. A resource write scope includes the matching read scope. socketchief:read grants every resource read scope, socketchief:write grants every resource write and read scope, and socketchief grants everything. A resource scope does not grant access to unrelated resources.

Example token configurations

Monitor usage

Code
socketchief:usage:read

The token can read live channels and usage totals and history. Listing applications by name also needs socketchief:apps:read.

Provision an application per environment

Code
socketchief:apps:write

The token can create an application and return its credentials to a deployment tool, and delete it when the environment goes away. It cannot configure webhooks.

Manage webhooks from deployments

Code
socketchief:apps:read socketchief:webhooks:write

The token can find the application and point its webhooks at a new URL. It cannot read the app secret.
