Choosing the right tool for your file
Start with the change you need. Use a converter when another format is required, a compressor when a file-size limit is the problem, and a resize or crop tool when the pixel dimensions or framing need to change. These operations solve different problems: changing format or file size does not automatically meet a required width, height, or aspect ratio.
Check requirements before you upload
Application forms and other services may set separate rules for file size, image format, pixel dimensions, and page dimensions. Check the destination's instructions first, then review the output and open the downloaded file before submitting it. Meeting a size limit alone does not ensure a file meets every requirement.
Understand image conversion and compression
Formats have different properties. JPEG does not preserve transparency, while PNG can; converting an image to JPEG can therefore change transparent areas. Compression can also reduce detail, especially with very small targets. Compare the result with the original and check small text, edges, and dimensions before using it.
