Chicago-based DJ @Mikemfnlove released ‘Nigerian Gangster’ over 13 years ago!

The phenomenal mixtape features the vocals from Jay Z’s ’American Gangster’ album seamlessly backed by Fela Kuti samples. It’s really like they were in the studio together! We caught up with Mike Love and talked about how he chose each sample, @thefader and @questlove’s contributions towards its success, the death of the MySpace mixtape era, and the cultural impact of the project among the Nigerian diaspora communities

Sample Chief Talks 'Nigerian Gangster' with Mike Love

Tonight’s episode is an hour-long special selection of Congolese Rumba hosted by writer, DJ and Rumba aficionado, Rika Mpogazi (@la.sappe).

Rumba is the foundation of Congolese music. Born in Congo, bred in Cuba and brought back to Congo in time for the nation’s independence and musical golden age, its infectious rhythm and widespread appeal pioneered by the rumba legends like Tabu Ley Rochereau, Simaro Lutumba, Franco Luambo & co., not only influenced Congo’s burgeoning Ndombolo and Soukous scene but also set the pace for many other musical genres throughout the African continent and around the world

Tonight’s episode is an hour-long special of super-duper-ultra rare Nigerian disco. Between 1979 and 1983, Nigeria experienced an economic boom, the return of democracy after years of military dictatorship, and a lot of money flooding into the country. The music industry benefited from this and produced some amazing music. Many foreign record labels set up shop in Lagos because it was the place to be! The nightlife, the talent pool and the huge market made it conducive for music making.

This mix takes you on a journey of deep disco cuts of synth-pop, funk and boogie from that era.
