This is one of the most fun projects I've worked on. Playing against the robot was surreal. It's surprisingly fast! We tried many approaches, but the simplest worked best at scale: self-play on top of a skill-conditioned low-level policy.

An interesting analogue to this is LLMs creating a video using Blender. It does a pretty good job. But given the same compute, video models are far better! Many complex actions aren't described in text data, and learning them via RL with sparse rewards is hard.

Recently, there have been a lot of impressive demos of AI agents, like Claude, controlling robots. I wrote a short blog post with my thoughts on the advent of these "robot-use agents." web.mit.edu/phillipi/www/w… I think it's an important change in the trajectory of robotics!
