Why Removing the Vision Encoder Can Be Better — From an Infra Perspective
Over the past six months, much of my research has been influenced by @paranioar, and I have gradually become a loyal believer in Encoder-Free multimodal models. I often find myself trying to convince

Seeing Inkling launch feels deeply rewarding. From EVE to NEO, we’ve explored the encoder-free path since 2024. Seeing Inkling scale to 1T feels like a dream finally coming true. EVE: github.com/baaivision/EVE NEO: github.com/EvolvingLMMs-L… Congrats to TML. 🚀

Our first model, Inkling. Trained from scratch, weights are open, fine-tunable on Tinker today.

Very excited to see the new progress in encoder-free multimodal models — congratulations to the Gemma Team on this inspiring milestone! This direction strongly resonates with our recent work, NEO-OV (arxiv.org/abs/2605.28820), which was actually trained back in December 2025 as

NEO-ov: vision-language models without image encoders This native foundation model learns pixel-to-word correspondence end-to-end, unifying images, video, and spatial intelligence without external encoders or adapters.

Sharing the 3rd NEO-series work: NEO-ov ✨ 🔥Native multimodal model is no longer about “whether it works,” but “how far it can scale.” 📚 TL;DR (1) Fully encoder-free architecture: no external encoder, no adapter, no auxiliary loss. (2) Learns pixel-pixel and pixel-word

People talk, listen, watch, think, and collaborate at the same time, in real time. We've designed an AI that works with people the same way. We share our approach, early results, and a quick look at our model in action. thinkingmachines.ai/blog/interacti…
