What the Colors Mean

Wordler's color system is very straightforward once you've witnessed its function, so what we have is this:

A

Green — This letter is in the word AND is in the right place. Leave it where it is. Keep it locked in and make your next guess based around it.

B

Yellow — This letter is in the word however it's in the wrong place. It should be in a different place in the word, so try rearranging the letters.

C

Gray — The letter is not in the word at all. Remove it from your mental list and do not use it again. The keyboard below will also gray out these letters to keep track.

The game also includes a color blind mode which switches the green and yellow for orange and blue making the clues more distinguishable if you are prone to color confusion.

Dark Theme

If you prefer playing at night, enable Dark Mode toogle to darken the site interface. This decreases the amount of screen brightness which makes it much easier to look at.

Color Blind Mode

Color Blind Mode is intended for players with problems to analyze some colors, so it can use high contrast color indication, making the game easier to understand and more accessible.

Timer

Turn on the Timer toggle to see how much time you've been spending on the puzzle. This is a fun feature if you're trying to beat your own speed or out-do your friends.

Tips to Win Wordler

Wordler appears to be simple, but there is a small amount of strategy that distinguishes the players who solve it in two guesses from those that struggle to get it by their sixth. Follow this:

Pro Tips for Wordler

  • Begin with high value words: Use words that contain common letters and vowels. Words like CRANE, SLATE or RAISE can provide useful clues right from the first move. An excellent first word helps a lot.
  • Test New Letters Initially: At the start, the only thing you need to do is use different new characters and do not use existing same characters. This is one practice used to eliminate false letters more quickly.
  • Think in Word Patterns: As certain letters are set, think about familiar words patterns. Don't guess randomly. Think about where green and yellow letters will fit in the word. It saves guesses and increases your accuracy.
  • Use Letter Frequency: Letters such as E, A, R, O, T, L and S are used in lots of words, and they will help you to make longer words. Use these first to rule out various options.
  • Think Double Letters: If you're really stuck, it can be a double letters. Players forget the possibility of the words having double letters such as LL, EE, or SS. This can sometimes help you solve the game.

Best Starting Words for Wordler

Your first guess is so crucial. A well-selected word will give you 2 or 3 clues immediately. On the other hand, a badly-selected word gives you nothing to start with. The key is to choose a word made up of the most popular English letters.

From letter frequency analysis (people have put together the stats), the top 10 most common characters in 5 letter words in English are E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S, N and C. You therefore need a starting word that contains most of these.

Top 10 Starting Words (Based on Letter Frequency)

  1. CRANE — hits the C, R, A, N and E. This is a favorite selection of many competitive players.
  2. SLATE — sets include S, L, A, T & E. Nice blend of consonants & vowels.
  3. TRACE — T, R, A, C, E. Similar to CRANE, just tests T rather than N.
  4. ARISE — A, R, I, S, E. Three vowels and Two power consonants.
  5. STARE — S, T, A, R, E. Arguably the statistically most successful openers.
  6. RAISE — R, A, I, S, E. Another three vowel choice that can do a variety of things.
  7. AUDIO — A, U, D, I, O. Four vowels in a single word. Helped me quickly determine the vowel pattern.
  8. ADIEU — A, D, I, E, U. Also four vowels. Give you a huge amount of information about the word's structure.
  9. ROAST — R, O, A, S, T. Two vowels, three common consonants. Balanced selection of letters.
  10. TRAIN — T, R, A, I, N. Great all rounder that will help your team cover the major positions.

Some people like to start with the same word every time. Some people change it up. While there isn't really any "best" starting word because it depends on the answer, you'll have the best chances of receiving helpful feedback with any of the words mentioned above.
