Inspiration

To promote academic weapons! In other words, we want our students who use our app to build successful studying habits. As college students, we constantly procrastinated and didn't know how to study effectively. We learned of spaced repetition recently, and we believe that paired with the Pomodoro method of studying, we can reach new heights as students.

What it does

Uses Pomodoro combined with spaced learning to benefit students' study skills by considering students' attention span, memorization, and retention to optimize on time students spend studying. Encourages and motivates students using a reward system which earns students points based on the progress they are making.

How we built it

Our team researched, brainstormed, and discussed what methods have been the most effective when students study. We judged this based on students' attention span, memorization, and retention. Based on what we analyzed we programmed a spaced time that combines both Pomodoro, spaced learning, and reward system to motivate students. We used Wix to create our application.

Challenges we ran into

Our project was originally built on Nicepage for the UI and used both Python Flask and CockaroachDB for the backend. However, we had issues with connecting the frontend with the backend, which resulted in our web application breaking. We recreated the application on Wix Velo.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We accomplished creating a small-scaled model of a web application that allows students to study whilst giving back to an organization of their choice.

What we learned

Through our research we learned a lot about study habits and what are some of the most optimal ways for students to learn. We incorporated our findings into the program we created in hopes to benefit students all over the world who struggle to find a proper method to study and one that works best for them. We learned UI development in Nicepage and experimented with Python Flask and CockroachDB for backend and even though that did not work out how we wanted it to but was still a great learning experience. We did not lose motivation and learned Wix Velo to be able to transfer and recreate our web page.

What's next for Academic Weapon

There are many features our team wanted to include, some of which include:

  • Allowing students to choose their own rewards, which include saving up for college, saving up hobby equipment, etc.
  • Building a better user interface. For the Pomodoro method timer session, we plan on creating a growing tree or flower figure, which bears fruit to depict the rewards they've earned for more motivation.
  • Adding a calendar figure to help students plan their study schedule ahead.
  • Implement a "study-a-thon" feature that allows parents and other supporters to chip in and donate to students studying. Funds will be donated to non-profits of our choice.
