Inspiration
As students with requirements and desires to be certified in First Aid and CPR, we took notice of the lack of retention that can exist between the 3 years of the certifications validity. Decreasing attention spans and overwhelming amounts of information can contribute to this decline, as well as general forgetfulness. With such important health matters at hand, we felt it would be crucial to have this information on hand, and that refreshing or learning the information should be available whenever, wherever. Not to mention, in the unthinkable scenario that someone finds themselves in an emergency, they could quickly address the application for assistance, emergency contacts, and additional tips.
What it does
The application currently has several features. One, the emergency button, which takes users to a page with several features. A phone will contact emergency services. A timer will allow users to perform CPR in a timely manner. Tips will give users quick emergency tips in the case that users did not complete the modules. The main sections provide users with an interactive learning experience. Through readings, videos, and questionnaires, users gain insight to lifesaving methods and pieces of information that will aid them in countless scenarios.
How we built it
We constructed an initial prototype for several application pages using Figma. For the interactive pages, we utilized React, JavaScript, CSS and Node.js for the general construction, and Adobe Photoshop for our mascot.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into a few challenges, both conceptual and technical. Technically, several members were new to the world of CSS, React, and even Git. It took a lot of patience and troubleshooting in order to gain the knowledge necessary to implement the project. Several errors in pulling and pushing the branches led go further troubleshooting. Conceptually, in order to expand our application into a sustainable product, we re-envisioned and thought up of future ventures that we could focus on, giving us areas of growth and additional development.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of our ability to collaborate within a short amount of time, as well as learn several languages that some members were previously unfamiliar with. Our project is an idea that we all believe in, and we would like to see the further development of the idea.
What we learned
We learned React, CSS, JavaScript, Figma, and how to work and innovate under a very tight deadline.
What's next for OctoCare
Some of our future ventures include attempting to be accredited and affiliated with Red Cross, providing a First Aid Product Shop to supply users with life saving, authorized equipment.
