My Current Setup

As a marketer, I use a combination of the usual “office” and creative tools. Since I maintain an interest in tech and self-hosting, my list of apps is long.

  • Mac Mini (Late 2014) x2 :: Used for self-hosting applications with Docker. Ubuntu 20.04.
  • MacBook Pro (2016) :: Main workhorse.
  • iPad Pro 10.5” (2017) :: 50% consuming media, 50% writing. Never felt the need to upgrade since I don’t max it out at all.
  • iPhone XS :: iOS 17.4.1, daily driver, loaded with apps I use everyday only.~~
  • Safari :: In combination with 1Blocker and Adguard Home.
  • Arc :: The split view and Little Arc views are useful when researching or going down rabbit holes.
  • 1Blocker :: Only decent ad and tracker blocker that works on Mac and iOS.
  • Warp :: Have tried iTerm2, Hyper, kitty, Alacritty, default Mac terminal, but this is what I’ve been using recently.
  • Wave :: Kind of an OSS version of Warp, but still has lots of rough edges.
  • Homebrew :: Mainly used to install and update CLI tools. I simply can’t live without it.
  • zsh :: Just cuz it’s the default on MacOS.
  • Starship :: Prompt customizer.
  • Neovim :: Used for notes and programming.
  • iWork :: When org-roam isn’t enough.
  • Office 365 :: When iWork isn’t enough.
  • Devonthink :: My dumping ground for links and files.
  • Cryptomator :: Encrypting files on local or remote.
  • Cyberduck :: Tranferring files, supports Cryptomator.
  • Mountain Duck :: Mounting remote files, supports Cryptomator.
  • Rclone :: Backing up files to the cloud.
  • LSP :: Used with Neovim to provide code completion and navigation.
  • Insomnia :: REST client.

Tools that don’t need to be public.

  • Adguard Home :: Highly configurable ad blocker. Not the best UI, but it works really well.
  • Bitwarden & bitwarden_rs :: Password manaager and alternative Bitwarden server implementation.
  • Wireguard (inbound) :: VPN in to access services listed above.
  • Wireguard (outbound) :: Traffic flows through an external VPN provider.
  • SingleFile :: Archive interesting websites.

Tools hosted at VPSs.

  • Mailcow :: Suite of mail-related applications used for personal mail accounts.
  • Backblaze B2 :: Cloud backup and also used to serve up images for this website through Cloudflare.
  • Astro :: Replaced Hugo because I wanted something a big more flexible.
  • Cloudflare :: Hosting; free, developer-friendly, supports Hugo and needs no maintance once set up.

While I do have accounts for Telegram and WhatsApp, I don’t actually use them.

  • Messages :: Apple has me locked in here.
  • Signal :: Interacting with privacy-conscious friends.
  • Halide :: Best camera app for RAW images.
  • Overcast :: Podcast player with great speed functionality
  • Wireguard :: Connecting to home network.
  • Solitaire+ :: When I need to shut down my brain.
  • SpellTower+ :: When I want my brain to use up some energy.

*Powerline :: Replaced with Starship.
*Emacs :: Nothing wrong with Emacs but just needed a change.
*Seafile :: I realized I didn’t really need my files to be accessible. For backups, I use external HDs.
*BlackSight :: Not sure why, but I simply don’t take many photos anymore. Everyone else does, so I can get a copy if needed.
*Org Mode :: Haven’t set it up in Neovim yet. Will probably go back to it eventually.
*Org-roam :: Wasn’t using it much in the first place and I’m not sure if there is something similar for Neovim.
*Pi-hole :: Found to be slow for some reason. Replaced with Adguard Home.
*Hugo :: used WordPress for years, but never used any WordPress-specific funtionality, so I decided to migrate.
