Iodine deficiency before and during pregnancy is a threat to children’s cognitive development. Iodizing salt is a simple, highly cost-effective public health measure that protects populations and national potential. It’s a proven, successful solution that helps children grow, learn, and thrive.

Protecting children's brain development through salt iodization

Iodine deficiency remains a major but preventable barrier to children’s development. Severe deficiency during pregnancy can reduce a child’s IQ by about 6-10 points, while even moderate deficiency can lower IQ by 3-5 points. Every dollar spent on salt iodization has a $30 impact in terms of human productivity and income.

What we do

Most people are now protected from deficiency due to fortification of salt with iodine worldwide. However, this achievement is slipping. Salt iodization programs must be sustained, and must adapt to changing diets and lifestyles to be effective. IGN works with countries to make this possible, supporting research, improving strategies, and providing technical expertise.
