The Power of Decentralization (and Self-Hosting)

The Power of Decentralization (and Self-Hosting)
Most social networks live inside a single company's servers. One owner, one
policy, one point of failure. Decentralization changes that.
Instead of one central platform, the network is made of many independent
servers β called instances β that talk to each other using open protocols
like ActivityPub. You pick your server, keep your identity, and can still
follow and interact with people on other servers. It's like email: you use
Gmail, I use a private server, and we still reach each other.
Why it matters
Why self-hosting matters
Decentralization is only as real as the people willing to run their own
nodes. When you self-host, you don't just use the network β you are the
network. Everything runs on hardware you control, with your own rules, your own
data, and no third party in the middle.
Decentralization isn't just a technical detail. It's a shift of power from
platforms back to people β and self-hosting is how you take that power.
About niwego.com: this instance is fully self-hosted and has been
running for more than 2 years. It runs on nothing more than an old
HP ProDesk 600 G4 Mini PC β no data center, no cloud, no huge budget. Just
a small box in a home, proving that the decentralized, self-hosted web is real,
sustainable, and within everyone's reach.

Iβm looking for some formatting help with HTML and CSS.
These are the IDEAS I have, I drew them to convey what I want the output to be.
How though could I structure this so that it renders in html and css with the desired drawn implementation

Made a little widget for Pika blogs that shows your recent writing stats: total words, longest post, posting rhythm, busiest weekday and more. One copy-paste and it matches your theme. π

Yesterday's Front End Study Hall blew my mind. @KevinMarks loaded an ISO of a CD he helped author decades ago into infinite Mac and it RAN. He also rendered Bryce in a browser. POSSE β Publish (on your) Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere is an old IndieWeb idea that holds up remarkably well for companies too.
Own the canonical copy. Share links wherever conversations happen.
It's the principle behind Contlify's publishing destinations: your site or your WordPress install, not a hosted platform.
Hey there. I'm SBK. Here's my #introduction.
I'm an aging hiki, LGBTQIA+ anarcho-syndicalist, AuDHD, FOSS enthusiast, and a chronic hobby-hopper. Most of my creative doings revolve around programming or making semi-abstract/surreal visual art in a variety of mediums. These days it's primarily monochrome ANSI art and freeform analog doodling, but I used to be quite enamored with 3D fractals.
Aside from that I read a lot of intensely serious research/literature/etc., perform optimism-obliterating media analysis, write a lot of tech manuals, and attempt to survive long enough to spit in the eye of any passing giants.
Sometimes I also distract myself with a lifelong love of solo-tabletop/videogame design, but I don't really engage with other entertainment media unless it's weird 80s/90s VHS finds. One exception would be Japanese variety shows and the γη¬γ comedy scene in general... of which I've been obsessed for decades and could write volumes on (warts and all).
Some examples of my art are attached, but all of it (as well as links to any FOSS projects I'm messing with) ends up for perusal on my personal site at https://scanbluekey.neocities.org/

Β«We don't want decentralized systems, we want small onesΒ»
It doesn't matter if they are centralized inside; what matters is that they stay at a manageable size.

URL Roulette is back after a three-month rebuild.
Fun fact while I was away: this year's #TinyAwards winner, Cursor Camp, was in our weekly newsletter back in May β submitted by a visitor. The human web knows things before the algorithm does.

For a sneak peek at the subject of the upcoming blog post, you can take a look at this codeberg repository template for automatically publishing static sites - complete with a bouncer domain for consolidating `www.` and apex-domain configurations.
