Metering for scenes that are mostly dark, but have well-lit subjects (like concerts):
- Use spot metering if you've got it. Point the spot at your subject and lock exposure. No settings changes needed usually
- Use exposure compensation to bring the exposure down.
Tips for using a camera:
- there's nothing wrong with using P mode (though I will judge you if you use the Auto mode. They are not the same.)
- Switch to A (Av) or S (Tv) modes as needed if you need to isolate a variable (DoF, shutter speed)
- Use exposure compensation.
