Abdus Salam

1926–1996

Major contributions to the unification of the electromagnetic and weak nuclear forces (electroweak theory). Shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics with Steven Weinberg and Sheldon Glashow 'for their contributions to the theory of the unified weak and electromagnetic interaction between elementary particles, including, inter alia, the prediction of the weak neutral current.' First Pakistani and first Muslim to win a Nobel Prize in a science category. Co-developed the Pati–Salam grand unified theory model (1974) with Jogesh Pati. Founding director of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste (1964).

Ahmed H. Zewail

1946–2016

Pioneered femtosecond laser methods for observing the breaking and forming of chemical bonds in real time, founding the field of femtochemistry; later extended this work to ultrafast electron diffraction and four-dimensional electron microscopy. Awarded the 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry — the first Egyptian and first Arab to win a Nobel Prize in a scientific field.

Aziz Sancar

1946–present

Mechanistically dissected prokaryotic and eukaryotic DNA repair, including photolyase-driven reversal of UV lesions and the mammalian transcription–repair coupling factor CSB, and extended the same flavoprotein toolkit to circadian photoreception via cryptochromes. Shared the 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Tomas Lindahl and Paul L. Modrich for mechanistic studies of DNA repair. Self-identifies as a practicing Muslim.

Omar M. Yaghi

1965–present

Founded reticular chemistry — the design and synthesis of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) — with porous crystals tuned for gas storage, selective CO₂ capture, catalysis, and water harvesting from air in arid climates. Awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, shared with Richard Robson and Susumu Kitagawa, for the development of metal–organic frameworks.

Muhammad Yunus

1940–present

Pioneered the modern microcredit and microfinance movement: extending small uncollateralised loans (originally USD 27, in 1976) to landless rural villagers in Bangladesh, 97% of them women, repaid through joint-liability solidarity groups. Formalised the model as the Grameen Bank in 1983; the bank and its imitators have served hundreds of millions of borrowers across roughly 100 countries. Joint awardee of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize 'for their efforts to create economic and social development from below.'

Moungi Gabriel Bawendi

1961–present

Developed in 1993 the high-temperature 'hot-injection' organometallic synthesis of monodisperse colloidal CdSe semiconductor nanocrystals (quantum dots) — the procedure that, for the first time, gave routine access to nanocrystals with controlled size, narrow size distribution, and atomically smooth surfaces, enabling tunable, intense fluorescence across the visible spectrum. The Bawendi method underpins the modern quantum-dot industry (high-colour-gamut QLED displays, biological imaging probes, single-photon sources, photovoltaics, and cancer-margin surgical contrast agents) and was the basis on which Bawendi was awarded one third of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, jointly with Louis Brus and Aleksey Yekimov 'for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots'.

Maryam Mirzakhani

1977–2017

Breakthrough work in the geometry and dynamics of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces, including the structure of simple closed geodesics on hyperbolic surfaces and Weil–Petersson volumes. In 2014 she became the first woman and the first Iranian to receive the Fields Medal.

Sameera Moussa

1917–1952

Combined experimental radiology and nuclear-physics training to study ionization in cavities and X-ray beam quality, then used her public platform to argue for international safeguards and medical uses of atomic energy rather than weapons proliferation.

Maurice Bucaille

1920–1998

As a practising physician, synthesised modern clinical and Egyptological evidence — notably around the mummy of Ramesses II — into widely read comparative studies of the Bible and the Qur'an that shaped late-20th-century Muslim engagement with science-and-scripture questions.

Abdul Sattar Edhi

1928–2016

Founded the Edhi Foundation (1957) and built it, almost entirely on small private donations and without state subsidy, into the world's largest volunteer ambulance service (more than 1,800 ambulances) plus over 330 welfare centres across Pakistan running orphanages, women's shelters, mortuaries, drug-rehabilitation clinics, and the world's largest network of cradles for abandoned newborns ('jhoolas'). By his death he was the registered guardian of nearly 20,000 adopted children. Internationally awarded the Lenin Peace Prize (1988), the Ramon Magsaysay Award (1986), the UNESCO–Madanjeet Singh Prize (2009), and Pakistan's Nishan-e-Imtiaz (1989); repeatedly nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
