Create local user accounts

Last reviewed on November 4, 2025

Local user accounts can access your site’s admin area (WP Admin) without a WordPress.com account. In this guide, you will learn how to create local user accounts and optionally invite them to WordPress.com.

Add local users

Local users can access your site’s admin area without a WordPress.com account. They log in directly at yourgroovydomain.com/wp-admin using a username and password you create for them.

To create a local user account, follow these steps:

  1. Visit your site’s dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Users.
  3. In the top-right corner, check that the view is set to WP Admin (Classic).
  4. Click the “Add User” button.
  5. Fill in the username, email address, role, and other necessary fields for the new user.
  6. Optionally, check the “Send User Notification” box so that the new user will receive their login information.
  7. Click the “Add User” button to create the new user.

When local users visit your site’s login page, they’ll see two options: “Log in with WordPress.com” or “Log in with username and password“. WP Admin users should select “Log in with username and password“.

Note: This option only appears if WordPress.com login is enabled on your site.

📌

When WordPress.com login is enabled, WP Admin users cannot edit their profile information in WP Admin. To allow editing, either disable the WordPress.com login or invite them to create a WordPress.com account.

Invite local users to WordPress.com

Inviting local users to WordPress.com lets them edit their profile information and access your site through both the WordPress.com dashboard and WP Admin.

To send an invitation, follow these steps:

  1. Visit your site’s dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Users.
  3. In the top-right corner, check that the view is set to WP Admin (Classic).
  4. Locate the WP Admin user you want to invite, and under the “WordPress.com account” column, click the “Send invite” link.

The user will receive an email invitation to create a WordPress.com account. Once they accept, their WordPress.com account will be linked to their local user account.
