Inspiration
These days, college students often find it difficult to decorate their rooms, because they don't know how it looks like or can't picture the layout ahead of time, which makes the move-in process slow and inefficient. Our app, DecoGator, lets UF students get an early look at their apartments, allowing them to organize the existing furniture and see how new items would look in their room. This makes it easy for students to plan ahead, removing one thing off their plate from the stress of moving in.
What it does
Add and delete decorations in your apartment, including within the bedroom, bathroom, closet, and shared spaces like the living room and kitchen.
How we built it
We used a physical whiteboard for the brainstorming phase and utilized Figma for the design and prototyping phase.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges that we ran into include existing strong competition in the market, narrowing our scope and focus on what is important for our solution, and technical challenges during the prototyping phase
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to build the most essential features of our vision within 24 hours, combating all the obstacles that appeared on the way, and make strategic pivots and decisions whenever the opportunity presents itself.
What we learned
We learned that the initial idea of a solution are not always the correct and best solution for the problem. We understood that a change of direction is sometimes necessary to reach the final goal and we should embrace a different perspective that can take our product further.
What's next for DecoGator
We hope to expand DecoGator to increase the participation of apartment management or landlords into the app by allowing them to upload floor plans of their units into the app so that students can edit their actual living spaces with the correct dimensions. This enables seamless interaction between the host and renter, which stands out from existing apps on the market.
