Despair, Spare Me Not: Poems & Micro Stories

4.8 out of 5 stars (7)

Life hands us lemons and some say to make lemonade. But, what if you don't have it in you to create a delicious beverage from said lemons? Perhaps the darkness that surrounds us is so overwhelming that it is simply too hard to step into the light at the end of the tunnel. 'Despair, Spare Me Not' are poems and short stories that take a stroll through the scary forest of depression inching closer and closer to the happy ending that seems too far out of reach.

Katrina R. Lippolis surprised me this time! These poems are on the dark side of human emotions. After reading her other books I didn't expect her to go this dark. However, she had maintained her level of excellence I have come to expect from her work.

    Emotionally intense and deeply touching

This thin volume of short, intensely emotional poems packs a punch – it’s so personal, so evocative, so real that you have to wonder about the story behind it. I can’t know if it has anything to do with the writer’s personal life, of course, but I couldn’t help wonder if she wrote it during a break-up? A divorce? Are her other books (she write K-Pop fan fiction and recently wrote a beautiful love story as a stand-alone novel, „Coffee“) also autobiographical?

Of course, it’s not my place to pry, but it’s not easy for a writer to pack so much personality, emotion and a sense of truthfulness into such short poems, and Katrina R. Lippolis does just that beautifully.

Oh, yes, another thing – you can read the poems, in order, as a cycle that tells a story … and though I don’t want to spoil the end, let me say that there is a thoroughly enjoyable (and sensual) twist.

Katrina R. Lippolis shows off the raw, emotional, & darker side to poetry in her own beautifully poignant way in this collection. I enjoyed the subtle undertones of love, pain, and longing captured between lines. If you love poetry, this is a must read in my book.
