Questions

Do I need to be a Prism member to book the studio?

No. The studio is open to anyone. Members just pay less, $65 versus $95 for a two-hour block.

Where is the studio?

Inside Prism Spaces at 1212 N. Ashland Ave, 2nd floor, in Wicker Park, Chicago. Street parking and the Division Blue Line stop are both close.

Can I really run it myself?

Yes, that's the point. Audio-only, or one camera with up to four mics, is genuinely self-serve, and your first session starts with a free 15-minute orientation. Two or more cameras, or livestreaming, needs an operator.

What does it cost?

A two-hour block is $95 audio-only, or $145 with video, $65 and $115 for members. Half day is $175 / $225, full day $325 / $375. Video prices include one camera; additional cameras are $25 each, and an operator is $50/hr with a two-hour minimum.

Do you have a green screen?

Yes. It's $25 per session on any booking with a camera, and we rig it before you arrive, so let us know when you book. There's nothing for it to do on an audio-only session, so it's a video add-on.

How do I get my recordings?

Bring a USB drive and take them with you, or add file delivery for $35. We hold files for 7 days after your session, then delete them.

I only need audio, am I paying for video I won't use?

No. Cameras aren't in the base rate, so a voiceover, music or audio-podcast session is $95 for two hours and you're not subsidising equipment you never touch. For comparison, the nearest audio-only rooms to us run around $150 an hour.

Can I record music there?

Voice and acoustic work, yes, Monday to Thursday evenings after 6pm, or anytime at the weekend, since we share the floor with people working. It's a podcast and voice room, not a live band room.

How many people fit on camera?

Four comfortably in the studio, each on their own microphone. For five or six, we relocate the session to one of our meeting rooms, $250 plus the room rate, with one of our team running it, evenings and weekends, 72 hours notice. Four microphones is our maximum in any room, so a group that size shares a mic between two people. That's normal for panel recording and it sounds good.

Can I move around while recording, instead of sitting at a mic?

Yes, add the wireless mic kit for $25. It covers up to two people, so it's for solo shows, interviews, and anything you want to shoot standing or walking.

How far ahead do I need to book?

Self-serve sessions, as little as a day. If you need the operator, 48 hours. Groups of five or six, 72. The studio is closed on Fridays.
