About the Author
Karan Gokani grew up in Mumbai and came to England in 2005 to study law at Cambridge. In 2012 he left his career as a solicitor to move back to India and focus on food and cooking. He returned to England and opened the first Hoppers in 2015 with the Sethi siblings, founders of JKS Restaurants. Always looking for the next excuse to visit Sri Lanka, Karan's obsession with the tiny island country began in 2009 where he met his first Sri Lankan friends at university. The book is an ode to Sri Lankans, their warmth, hospitality, love and, above all, a very personal and subjective story of their food through the Hoppers lens.

About the author

Karan grew up in Mumbai with a deep love for food and hospitality. He moved to England in 2005 and in 2015, co-founded Hoppers, a Sri Lankan and South Indian restaurant in London’s Soho. It quickly earned a Bib Gourmand and glowing reviews leading to new openings in Marylebone (2017) and King’s Cross (2020).
In 2022 Karan released his bestselling and acclaimed debut cookbook, Hoppers (Quadrille). In September 2025, Bluebird will publish Indian 101: Real Indian Recipes Made Simple. Over the years, Karan has written for major publications and appeared on BBC's Saturday Kitchen, MasterChef UK, Jamie's One Pound Meals and NBC’s Today Show.
He’s built a dedicated following of over 650,000 on Instagram, where his Indian 101 series has had more than 75 million views. He also leads Hoppers’ “Feeding the Future” initiative in Sri Lanka, supporting underprivileged children with early education. Since 2022, the project has raised over GBP 350,000 and built three preschools.
Karan lives in London with his wife Sunaina and two young sons. He loves cooking, travelling, working out, cycling, music and writing, and dreams of cooking for Bruce Springsteen one day.
