Frequently asked questions
How do I add subtitles to a video automatically?
Upload your video above. AI transcribes the speech, times every word and turns it into captions. Check the text, pick a style, then export a captioned MP4 or download an SRT file.
Is it free?
Yes, with no watermark. You can caption and edit any video up to 90 minutes for free. A free account exports videos up to 3 minutes long, with 30 minutes of captions a month, as MP4 up to 1080p without a watermark. It includes 8 caption styles, SRT, VTT and TXT downloads and free translation into 100+ languages. Pro gives you unlimited captions on videos up to 90 minutes, all 22 styles with word animations such as karaoke and word highlight, bilingual captions, exports up to 4K, AI keyword highlights, custom fonts and saved styles. See what’s included in the free subtitle generator.
How does it compare with other AI subtitle generators?
It’s a caption tool, not a full video editor: CapCut, VEED and Descript do more editing. What it adds is a free plan with no watermark, SRT, VTT and TXT files and free translation. See how 11 AI subtitle generators compare.
Is my video private?
Yes. Your video never leaves your device — captions are rendered in your browser. Only the audio track is sent for transcription, and we never store your video or audio.
Can I use my own SRT file?
Yes. Import an SRT or VTT, restyle it and burn it into your video, or edit and convert it to another format.
Which languages are supported?
Transcription works in 100 languages with automatic detection. Translation (free) also covers 100+ languages, and bilingual captions (Pro) show two at once.
Does it work for TikTok, Reels and YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Captions are drawn at the size of your video, so vertical 9:16 clips work just like 16:9 YouTube videos, and they start clear of each app’s buttons. See the Instagram Reels safe zone for each app. You can also add a hook title that stays on screen.
How many characters per line should captions have?
It depends on the frame. For landscape film and TV, Netflix allows up to 42 characters per line and two lines per subtitle. The BBC sizes online subtitles by width instead: up to 68% of a 16:9 frame and 90% of a vertical 9:16 one. As the BBC puts it, lines are constrained by the width of the region in which they are displayed.
Our styles keep 16–34 characters per line and wrap to the width of your video, so vertical clips get short, punchy lines.
What’s the difference between burned-in captions and an SRT file?
Burned-in (open) captions are drawn into the video itself, so they show on every platform in the style you picked. An SRT file is a separate subtitle track that viewers can turn on or off on YouTube and other players; it keeps the text and timing but not the style. YouTube accepts both SRT and WebVTT, the W3C’s subtitle format.
