Abstract

The phenomenon of grain boundary sliding with diffusional accommodation has been applied to the problem of incandescent lamp burn-out with good results. Accordingly, the results suggest that the extent to which the grain boundary shape deviates from a planar interface perpendicular to the wire axis is the critical factor in determining the life of the filament. In addition, a method for the optimization of the coil geometry, microstruc-ture, and temperature for increasing the filament life are suggested.
