The Wall Garden

wall_garden

A vegetable garden on the walls of the house.

No pots, just a continuous layer of soil so that roots can grow unrestricted!

The purpose of the Wall Garden is to:

  • Grow vegetables directly on the walls.
  • Consume less water than a horizontal garden.
  • Use less horizontal land (that can be used for other purposes, such as planting trees).
  • Provide thermal insulation for the house,
  • Use water from the house gutters.

Technical specs

  • 3 sections of wall (separated by the house's windows).
  • 6m in length (total),
  • 1.8m (of soil) in height,
  • 11cm soil thickness,
  • 2mm plexiglass is used as the external layer. I have chosen plexiglass because it is strong enough to hold the structure, and it is easy to cut. Also, it is transparent and shows which part of the garden is not watered properly.

Structure

Layers from the house wall to outside:

  • hydroisolation,
  • 10 cm of soil,
  • plexiglass,
  • welded mesh,
  • vertical corners attached to the roof rafters.

Materials and prices

Prices are specific to my region (Cugir, Romania). I have not searched for better prices from distant stores. Prices do not include shipping (because I purchased the materials from nearby stores and the shipping was free).

Tools

Software

  • OpenSCAD - for 3D design.
  • Real Cut 1D - for minimizing waste when cutting linear materials (bars) (if you have a lot of bars to cut from).

Build instructions

  • Cut the bars, welded mesh and the plexiglass to required size (depends on the wall size),
  • Build the mechanical structure. The order of layers (from wall to outside) is:
    • hydroisolation layer on the wall,
    • plexiglass (at 10-11 cm from the wall),
    • welded mesh,
    • vertical corners.
  • Fill with soil,
  • Dig holes in plexiglass (I did that with grinding machine with a 1mm thick blade and then I used the heat gun with a conic metal tube to enlarge it),
  • Plant peppers,
  • Water it when needed.
