The GTE (General Translation Editor) and LM (Locale Manager) roles can add new users with the \"Project Translation Editor\" role that can approve translations for specific projects. There are two different Translation Editor roles: \n<a href=\"#general-translation-editor\">General Translation Editor<\/a> and <a href=\"#project-translation-editor\">Project Translation Editor<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Guest<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guests are all users who don\u2019t have any account or are not logged into their <span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>WordPress.org<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>WordPress.org<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization.  <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/\">https:\/\/wordpress.org\/<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span> account. Guests can see the projects and their translations but can\u2019t suggest translations or add them to the already translated set of <span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>strings<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>String<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings.<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Contributor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contributors can suggest translations and see other translations of the same strings, suggested by other users. To become a contributor, you need to <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/support\/register.php\">register<\/a> or<a href=\"https:\/\/login.wordpress.org\/wp-login.php?redirect_to=https:\/\/translate.wordpress.org\/\"> log in<\/a> to your WordPress.org account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Translation Editor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>Translation Editors<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>Translation Editor<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>Translation editors can approve translations for projects. If you\u2019d like to become the <span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>General Translation Editor<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>General Translation Editor<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>A General Translation Editor (often referred to as GTE) is a person, who has global access to validate strings on <strong>all projects for a specific locale.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> of a new localization of WordPress, review the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/make.wordpress.org\/polyglots\/handbook\/translating\/requesting-a-new-locale\/\">Requesting a New Locale<\/a>\u201d page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So be ready to give your first translation suggestions like a Contributor!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"getting-started\">Getting Started<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To contribute translations using translate.wordpress.org, simply <a href=\"https:\/\/login.wordpress.org\/wp-login.php?redirect_to=https:\/\/translate.wordpress.org\/\">log in<\/a> (or<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/support\/register.php\"> register an account<\/a>) to your WordPress.org account. This automatically gives you the necessary permissions to contribute to any translation projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once logged in, go to <a href=\"https:\/\/translate.wordpress.org\/\">https:\/\/translate.wordpress.org\/<\/a>, you\u2019ll see a list of <span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>locales<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>Locale<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it\u2019s used in Mexico. They provide a way for functions to modify data of other functions. They are the counterpart to Actions. Unlike Actions, filters are meant to work in an isolated manner, and should never have side effects such as affecting global variables and output.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d you see above \u201cSearch projects\u2026\u201d field. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings.<\/span><\/span><\/span> has a \u201cstatus\u201d, indicated by the background color of the row.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"strings-status-color-key\">Strings Status Color Key<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Untranslated:<\/strong> A white background (<span style=\"color: #f9f9f9\">\u25fc\ufe0e<\/span>) indicates a string that has no suggestion yet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Translated (Current):<\/strong> A green background (<span style=\"color: #b5e1b9\">\u25fc\ufe0e<\/span>) indicates an approved string, which will be in a future (or current) version of WordPress. These are the only strings that will be used to create the language pack that will be downloaded to your WordPress website.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Waiting:<\/strong> A yellow background (<span style=\"color: #ffe399\">\u25fc\ufe0e<\/span>) indicates a string that was suggested, but not yet approved by a Translation Editor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fuzzy:<\/strong> An orange background (<span style=\"color: #fbc5a9\">\u25fc\ufe0e<\/span>) indicates a \u201cfuzzy\u201d string. A fuzzy string is a previously approved translation of which the original string has been slightly modified. That translation needs to be reviewed for accuracy and edited or approved.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Changes Requested:<\/strong> A blue background (<span style=\"color: #87ceeb\">\u25fc\ufe0e<\/span>) indicates that the suggested translation needs changes. A translation editor can request changes to a suggested translation in the review process and may request these changes for typos, consistency with the glossary, and other concerns. Make the requested edits and submit your updated translation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rejected<\/strong>: A red background (<span style=\"color: #f1adad\">\u25fc\ufe0e<\/span>) indicates a string that was rejected by a Translation Editor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Old:<\/strong> A purple background (<span style=\"color: #cdc5e1\">\u25fc\ufe0e<\/span>) indicates a string that was obsoleted by a newer, approved translation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Warning:<\/strong> A red bar to the left of a string, indicates validation warnings, such as mismatched <span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>HTML<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>HTML<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>HTML is an acronym for Hyper Text Markup Language. It is a markup language that is used in the development of web pages and websites.<\/span><\/span><\/span> tags, missing %s placeholders or a large difference in length between the original string and its translation. You can copy the relative <span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>URL<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>URL<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>A specific web address of a website or web page on the Internet, such as a website\u2019s URL www.wordpress.org<\/span><\/span><\/span> from the address bar of the browser to refer to that string, for example if you need to point other Polyglots to it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Translation History: it opens a page that shows all the translations that has been inserted for a string, they could be current, old, rejected, or fuzzy translations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>View original in consistency tool: it opens a page with the <a href=\"https:\/\/translate.wordpress.org\/consistency\/\">consistency tool<\/a> for that string, in your locale, for all projects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the main area of the translation there are additional information for the string, before and after the translation box itself:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Context: a note from developers to explain the context of the string and additional information about the source<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Comment: a note from developers to explain for example the meaning of a placeholder or of the entire string<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>References\u00a0 it links the source code at the line the string is located<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suggestions from Translation Memory: suggestions from other identical or similar strings already translated in that locale<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other Languages: current translations of the original string in other languages<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the right of the main area of this box we have some <span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>Meta<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>Meta<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress.<\/span><\/span><\/span> information:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Status: based on the list \u201cStrings StatusColor Key\u201d seen above<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Priority of the original: priority for translation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the translation box the \u201cCopy original\u201d button present in the left bottom corner will do just that \u2013 copy the source string to the text box. In some cases and languages, it\u2019s easier to translate from the original string. In both cases, don\u2019t forget to click the <strong>\u201cSuggest\u201d<\/strong> button. The \u201cShow help\u201d button in the left bottom corner shows you a help dialog with useful information on translating in translate.wordpress.org.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Type your suggestion for the translation and click the <strong>\u201cSuggest\u201d<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once your suggestion is sent, the translation area of the next string will be opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suggest as many or as few strings as you want. Be aware that the same string can have any number of different suggestions, from different users. It will be up to the Translation Editors to decide which one fits best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"correct-your-own-translation\">Correct your own translation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you edit one of your pending suggested strings and make a new suggestion, then your previous, pending string is rejected automatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"glossary-tooltip\">Glossary Tooltip<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some original strings will have some terms underlined by dots. In order to transform them into \u201capproved\u201d (current) strings, which are the only ones that are used to create the language pack that will be downloaded to your WordPress website, a Translation Editor needs to approve those suggestions using the \u201cApprove\u201d button that appears in the Meta area of an Editor interface\u2019s screen.
