Numeracy: From Doing Math to Using Math

  • Institute 2024 Logo

This two-day NCTM Interactive Institute is designed to help K–8 educators strengthen one of the most important goals of mathematics instruction: helping students use mathematics confidently, flexibly, and purposefully. Through hands-on learning, collaborative experiences, and classroom-ready strategies, participants will explore the essential components of numeracy, including number sense, fluency, problem solving, reasoning, communication, and mathematical language.

Throughout the institute, teachers, coaches, and administrators will examine what it means to be numerate, experience practical instructional routines, and leave with actionable tools they can immediately apply to help students make sense of mathematics and use it effectively in school and everyday life

Day 1: Numeracy Through Fluency and Number Sense

Deepen understanding of numeracy and number sense.
Develop fluency that goes beyond facts and algorithms.
Implement classroom-ready routines and instructional moves.
Strengthen students' confidence, flexibility, and mathematical thinking.

Day 2: Numeracy Through Problem Solving and Communication

Teach students to reason through challenging problems.
Foster rich mathematical discussions and communication.
Build students' mathematical vocabulary and sense-making skills.
Leave with practical strategies you can use immediately.
