I consider buying a "Qube 3" new old stock in the local market (I've already found some and when searching online, I found this page) and set up a retro-collection site on it. The problem I have is that the vintage hardware is not suitable for powering on all year round.

Wow! This entire series has been a breath of fresh air. My first "job" was as a support technician for a regional Dial-up ISP in the Chicago-land area back in 2001. Cobalt was my dream web-server hardware back then, and even though I ended up being a software engineer than staying on the network side of things, any time I ever have to build or configure an IRC (or Discord) bot, I give it the nickname "cobalt." Keep up the awesome work!

Very cool! Though I noticed this website got served to me through Cloudflare (and HTTP/3, apparently), which... OK, I guess. I discovered the Serial Port YouTube channel just a few days ago, and I must say, I quite enjoy it. I think that retro-tech channels had been lacking in covering this kind of early networking/internet stuff, so it's nice and enlightening to see it covered! Nanachi says nnaa!

I was the author of the original Cobalt restore CD. I had trashed my OS image and was desperate to get my machine back online. Gordon Garb (Dev. Programs Mgr) informed me they didn't have a restore CD available for customer use. I offered to produce one, and they accepted. I recall getting a couple of machines in trade for my efforts. I gave both of my Cubes away, but I still have a pair of RaQ 2s.

I have loved watching these videos -- so nostalgic. I ran a small webhosting company back in the late 90's; and, when I made the leap from reseller hosting, I bought a Raq3. It was great. Thanks for giving one of these little gems a new life and for sharing its journey with us.

When I learned about NixOS recently it reminded me of the Cobalt "Sausalito" configuration engine in some ways :-) I managed a couple of RaQ:s and the odd Qube in "production mode" back in the day - during the "BlueQuartz" era if memory doesn't fail me. Thanks for the video and setting up this project!

I remember working as a web developer for a very small company in 2004 when my boss rang me up and told me to drive an hour to a server room where we had one of those boxes in a rack, to try and fix it. The machine was not booting due to some hardware issue, but luckily the hard drive was OK. So I ended up borrowing a desktop PC from a neighboring company and installing RedHat on it, migrating all the customer's websites to this new machine. Those were wild times back then.

Having just watched your series of three YouTube videos, it just took me on a walk down memory lane as I owned a Cobalt Cube 3, Raq 2, Raq 3, Raq 4 and Raq 550. Absolutely loved the restoration work you did on the Raq 3. Whilst the Raq is long gone, Cobalt changed the internet totally. Luckily one of the forks of the original Sausalito code in the Cobalt machines still lives on with BlueOnyx which was a port of BlueQuartz. Cobalt (and you) thanks for the memories

Love seeing these things. If you're ever up for a crazy mod attempt, I wonder how many of those unpopulated headers would be functional if you were to solder the appropriate connectors. The second ethernet interface, SCSI, and secondary IDE would probably require a bit more, but I'd bet the PCI slot would work.

Always love to see people preserving and appreciating history, in all it's forms. Awesome job! Very cool to see the hardware that was running behind the scenes during my formative years on the internet. My first PC Dec. 2000: Pentium III 733 MHz, Legend QDI Advance 10E w AGP 4X, 256 MB RAM, Quantum Fireball 20GB IDE HD, Windows ME (:S), and first went online with broadband Oct. 2001 via Efficient Networks Speedstream 5360 Ethernet ADSL Modem ... exploration began :)

I was doing front-line tech support for Dell staring in 2004, so I wasn't working on infrastructure back when this raq3 was new, but the internet still mostly looked like this :-) I'm off doing Networking now, so I get to make roads for all sorts of new traffic now, but we're still solving the same basic problems: Tech that is cool enough to want, and easy enough to use when you got it.

Love what you guys are doing. Never used a RaQ, but this is part of my era. Spent the late 90s and the Y2K midnight watch in an obsolescent IBM mainframe and microserver data center. Converted a private IBM SNA network to a Cisco powered IP network "designed by VTAM guys", using static routes. :(( :)) It's an honor to sign your guest log.

I love seeing old historical hardware get restored for future generations to witness. Old computers serves as a reminder that the internet and computing was much more fun. Now newer computers are becoming baby-proofed and smart-proofed such as bios restrictions, part serialization, anti-repair, software limitations, planned obsolescence, internet censorship and the lack of privacy.

An idiot admires complexity, a genius admires simplicity, a physicist tries to make it simple, for an idiot anything the more complicated it is the more he will admire it, if you make something so clusterfucked he can't understand it he's gonna think you're a god cause you made it so complicated nobody can understand it. That's how they write journals in Academics, they try to make it so complicated people think you're a genius

That's the kind of basic homegrade system used in "heavy" production that I like. Also, the chassis has a great (front) design and i love VFD screen. It lacks an easy swap disk, but that's all. It's also an history part of the internet I didn't know. It xas a great discovery for me. Thanks for sharing these kind of episodes.

Nice work! It is cool to see the old time of the internet. Without adds, overloaded javascript and pretty slow websites with a lot of data going back and forth! To get "back to the roots" I do host complete static websites with Jekyll and avoid having a lot of javascript stuff. Feels faster and better.

I haven't thought of the Qube in years. A coworker in 1998 or 1998 was contacted to sell his companies cobalt.com domain. He jokingly responded with something like $20K and a few Qubes would do it. They sent him a contract a couple days later.

The waves of nostalgia are evident! I could have probably browsed a web page back in the day that was hosted in a server like this!

This is a really neat website that is a nice throwback and really shows off what the internet could do then and soo quick. It just makes sense, I wish more of the internet was still like this. With quick snappy interfaces... like the link clicks are quicker here than curent web, I prefer this. It makes sense, its quick, and fun. Good Job Thank you for taking the time to do this, its a great reminder of the internet past that still feels better than the curent web.
