Sun 26 Jul 2026

This week's 95bFM Jazz Show with Def Jim features six tracks by Free Jazz/Jazz-Funk/Blues guitarist James Blood Ulmer (or his bands) who died early last month at the age of 86, plus six more from a typically eclectic selection of other artists including Abdullah Ibrahim (aka Dollar Brand) - who also passed recently - and a brand new release from Ambrose Akinmusire & Mary Halvorson. Many thanks to texter Deon who was able to answer the question of how Mr Ulmer acquired his epithet 'Blood', which apparently originated in his being affectionately dubbed 'Youngblood' by other musicians in his early playing days.

Rob brings in some horrible snacks, reads a poem, and in sport, gets excited for the upcoming Tottenham vs AFC match. Kris enjoys the Hallertau Tropic Stout, inexplicably complains about Tom Hiddleston (again) on TV on the Radio...and plays a whole lot of music as well.

Tony Guo is a Tāmaki-based painter. Primarily working in oil painting, Guo’s practice centres on an exploration and projection of queer allegory and performance, with his own identity and experience underpinning the work. Often depicting these apparently specific situations, Guo’s paintings turn them on their head to resist a conventional narrative or explanation, instead embracing an absurdist or whimsical language to mask an existential dilemma.

His current solo exhibition at Season Aotearoa, Queue, sees Guo entering a new era of his practice as he leans more into abstraction, interlacing these figurative and abstract gestures with one another. Imagery of multiplicity – traces of figures and entities in queue – both arising and slipping back into the works themselves. Led by a process of improvisation, the works in Queue deemphasise a predetermined outcome or a clear procedural path, instead emphasising the unpredictability of experience, offering a reconsideration of performance in queue.

Sof caught up with Tony Guo about Queue and his overall practice
