Google just launched Ask Maps — AI-powered recommendations inside Google Maps. Is your venue ready?

AI Visibility for IndependentRestaurants and Bars

booteek measures how AI assistants recommend independent restaurants and bars — placeId-exact probes, identical questions on every comparison, across a live network of 6,252 venues in 34 cities in the UK, Portugal and Spain.

Each AI Answer Has Room for a Handful of Venues

booteek measured how AI assistants choose the restaurants and bars they recommend — 144 Maps-grounded probes across six cities, July 2026. The answers are short, the criteria are specific, and most of them live in your Google Business Profile.

0/1,126

web-AI cited sources that touched Google Maps

ChatGPT and Perplexity build answers from the open web — TripAdvisor, guides, blogs. Google's AI is different: it reads your Business Profile directly. Two separate contests, and your profile is the entry form for one of them.

Of 1,126 sources cited by web-searching AI assistants in booteek’s probe runs, none touched google.com/maps — booteek probe corpus, 9 July 2026.

4–14

venue slots in a typical AI answer

When an AI assistant answers “where should we eat or drink tonight”, it names a handful of venues, not a directory. Different questions draw different venues — a specific category and complete attributes enter you in more of those races.

Maps-grounded AI answers in our probes carried between 4 and 14 venue slots each, and the venues named for different questions barely overlap — booteek, 144 Maps-grounded probes across six cities, July 2026.

~12.7pp

visibility gap between two matched towns

Ericeira's independents are about 12.7 percentage points more visible to Google's AI than Cascais's, corrected for town size. Two comparable towns, measured with identical questions on the same days.

Ericeira’s independents are ~12.7 percentage points more visible to Google’s AI than Cascais’s, corrected for town size — 72 matched probes per town, identical questions; 45 tracked venues in Ericeira, 53 in Cascais. booteek, July 2026.

Google just launched Ask Maps — AI inside Google Maps that recommends where to eat, drink, and explore. It’s already live in the US and India.

Millions of tourists heading to the UK this summer will ask Maps, not type. If your Google profile is incomplete, Ask Maps can’t recommend you.

Your venue won’t exist in the conversation.

The booking goes to a competitor whose profile is complete. Not a better place. Just one that Google’s AI can actually find.

How AI assistants decide which venues to recommend

ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews read your Google Business Profile: category, description, hours, attributes, photos, and review replies. Where those fields are empty, the assistant recommends a venue whose fields are not.

AI Visibility — Example

When AI recommends a place to eat, who gets named?

Customers ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI for somewhere to eat or drink. A handful of venues get named — here's an example of how one area stacks up in our data.

How to improve your venue's AI visibility

Every step below is something you can do yourself, today, without booteek. They are ordered by how much each one moves an AI assistant's decision.

  1. Set a specific primary category. “Restaurant” and “Bar” are the two categories AI assistants can do least with. “Neapolitan pizza restaurant” or “Natural wine bar” tells them what to recommend you for.
  2. Write the 750-character business description. Name the dishes, the drinks, and the neighbourhood. This is the text an assistant quotes back when someone asks what your venue is.
  3. Fill in opening hours, including bank holidays and seasonal changes. An assistant will not recommend a venue it cannot confirm is open.
  4. Add owner photos of the room, the food, and the drinks. Photos uploaded by the business carry more weight than customer photos.
  5. Reply to every review, good and bad. Reply rate is a ranking signal, and your replies are text the assistant can read.
  6. Set your attributes: outdoor seating, step-free access, dog friendly, vegan options. These are the filters people ask assistants for by name.
  7. Link your menu and your booking page. An assistant that cannot find your menu will describe someone else's.

Common Questions

Why is my competitor above me on Google Maps?
Google ranks venues on three things: how complete your profile is, how often you get reviews, and how relevant your listing is to what someone searched. Relevance is where most independents lose. Say you run a natural wine bar and your primary category is set to “Bar”. Someone searches “natural wine near me”, and the place down the road matches: category “Wine bar”, description naming its producers, hours updated, every review answered. You don't. Completeness compounds: their photos, replies, and current hours all confirm to Google that the listing is maintained. The Competitor Check shows you, field by field, which of these you're missing and which competitor is winning on each.
I'm on Google already. Why am I not getting more bookings from it?
Being on Google Maps and showing up when someone searches are different things. A typical half-finished listing has the generic category (“Restaurant” rather than “Sri Lankan restaurant”), no business description, opening hours that were right last summer, four photos uploaded by customers and none by you, and no replies to reviews. Google reads that as a listing nobody maintains and ranks it below the competition. None of those five gaps is hard to close. Together they are usually the whole difference. booteek works through them with you over 6–7 weeks, three fields a week.
Can AI assistants like ChatGPT actually recommend my restaurant or bar?
They already do — for your competitors. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's Ask Maps read Google Business Profiles to decide what to recommend. Ask one “where can I get a good Sunday roast in Manchester with step-free access” and it answers from three fields: the category, the description, and the accessibility attributes. A venue that serves a Sunday roast but never wrote it down, and never ticked “step-free entrance”, cannot be the answer: not because it isn't good, but because there is nothing there to read. In booteek's July 2026 probes, Google's Maps-grounded AI was served the category, attributes and profile summary for every venue it recommended — the profile is literally the text the AI reads.
What's the difference between the Competitor Check and booteek Pro?
The Competitor Check is a one-off report: your Google profile, your reviews, your AI visibility, and how you compare to your top 5 local competitors. It tells you, for instance, that your category is generic, your description is empty, and that three of your five competitors reply to every review while you reply to none. booteek Pro then fixes what the report found — we complete the profile with you over 6–7 weeks, help you answer reviews, and track the score week by week. The report shows the problem. Pro is the fix. See booteek.ai/pricing for what each costs.
Google's AI reads your Business Profile directly. Web assistants never see it.

Your Competitors Are Already Visible to AI.

Are you?

Someone near you is asking an AI assistant where to eat right now. Whether they hear your name depends on one thing: how complete your Google Business Profile is.
