BLUF: Major updates for Archetypist, Adepticadian, and Foundation have been published. I have also been preoccupied with my job search since January.

Latest Updates

Foundation v1.2.0 has been published to GitHub. The UI has been overhauled, the design language has been streamlined and improved, and major under-the-hood changes have made it easier to develop with. Packages have been updated to the latest that support Compose Multiplatform.
Adepticadian v2.1.1 has been published to Google Play. The previously beta-only Foundation-based version has been updated and pushed to production, with UI improvements to match Foundation, a replaced QR code scanner library, and other minor improvements and bug fixes.
Archetypist v3.0.2 has been published to Google Play. This is a complete from-the-ground-up recreation of the original Archetypist app published in 2021, built with Foundation. All original features are retained, and a new card art set has been added (Ra by Michell Zappa).
Work has begun on a Foundation-based app for Rhode to Change: a political networking and resource app focused on connecting activist groups in the state of Rhode Island.
I’ve been applying for remote Senior-level native Android Engineering jobs since late January. This has taken up a lot of my time the last several months, but I’ve been intentionally carving out time to continue work on these Foundation-based projects.

You may have noticed that Bridge Supplies has been a bit quieter than usual the last few weeks. As it turns out, I caught a bit of the Bug of Christmas Cheer: I designed a sewable set of vibe-catalyzing Sprites, and made a bunch of them as gifts for friends and family.

Recently I remembered an idea for a sewable ball-shaped critter that I had wanted to sew for all my friends back when I was in high school. The idea involved each of my friends receiving a soft furry creature that would match something about themselves, like a favorite color. Unfortunately, my ambitions at the time greatly exceeded my capabilities (and attention span), but I did end up sewing a few creative animal gifts for friends over the following years in college.

This year, I’ve been blessed with nearly unlimited free time and no time-consuming full-time job for the first time in my adult life, so I decided to use it. Some of the outlets of my newfound free time have been this site, the KMP Compose Foundation project, refactoring my Adepticadian and Archetypist Law of One apps, and planning future KMP app collabs for 2025.

My other outlet, apparently, has been to rediscover my love of crafting something physical with my hands, as opposed to digital interactions and writing code. So, here are my latest creations, what I am calling the Christmas Sprites.

Meet Puff, a Cloud Sprite. He was my first test subject as I refined the production process for making a lot of these critters with minimal resource usage & complications.

I landed on this trapezoidal-ish shape, which was then folded to have the far sides meet, like this.

First, I’d invert the fabric, and then stitch the “spine” and the angle leading up to the top of the “head”. Then I’d stitch across the top to form the points for the “ears”.

After that, I’d un-invert the fabric, stuff with a bit of stuffing (making sure the ears had some squish), and sewed a square of black foam to the bottom hole to make a “foot” for it to stand on. Finally, I added the appropriate set of googly eyes to capture the Sprites personality.

Once I’d landed on my ideal shape, I realized that it would perfectly fit inside these neat little yogurt cups I’d been saving to potentially plant seedlings in. The idea naturally progressed, and I had soon decided to add a fabric top, hemp string tie, and a label card with proper care instructions.

After colors had been decided for every recipient (by me either choosing what fit them myself, or asking for what they wanted if I wasn’t sure), I began classifying each Sprite, giving them names and instructions on where to place them in your space for their proper growth and development.

Soon, I had a veritable Army of Christmas Sprites: Cloud, Shade, Water, Fire, Royal, Sun, Soft, Bear, Earth, and Sand. Fifteen of the twenty Sprites were given the special container setup. While putting them together, I realized that the glass cup could also be repurposed into a candle holder, using the hemp string as a wick and the fabric top as a sort of insulated coaster. I’ll let recipients know this upon receipt, in case they’re feeling extra crafty themselves.

One of the Shade Sprites, Mote, has already found a lovely new home with one of his own kin. The rest shall be distributed to specific family and friends in the coming days, spreading the reach of the protective golden shield offered by all hand-crafted expressions of love.

Now that this project has been officially completed, I feel content and energized. Making something tangible has always been a way for me to remind myself about what I’m capable of doing: a physical representation of my ambitions, identity, and creative spirit that not even I can take away from myself.

As I look to the remaining days of 2024, I think I’ve learned a lot about myself and others that I never anticipated 365 days ago. Here’s to continually creating, loving, and sharing our collective magic in 2025.

BLUF: Notable progress on Archetypist’s Study and Archetype screens have been made, with a preliminary integration of both C.C. Zain and Michell Zappa’s major arcana cards into the app.

Latest Updates

Added stored values for how many Study Stages a user has viewed so far (to unlock First, Second, and Third stages of study sequentially), as well as improving the 3-card, 2-card, and 1-card preview layouts for each stage.
Bugfixes carried over from Adepticadian to address passing the correct navigation arguments to launch a given Archetype screen.
Added C.C. Zain’s original card set, as well as Michell Zappa’s AI-generated representations of Ra’s words as an alternate set users can swap between.
Created a placeholder Archetype screen that currently just displays the primary card title and image.

BLUF: It ended up being BottomSheet Week. Some long-standing bugs with how BottomSheets were laid out across platforms was addressed, as well as more layout tweaks to align with API 35.

Latest Updates

Updated BottomSheet implementations across Foundation, Adepticadian, and Archetypist to make it behave more consistently, scroll content correctly, and account for navigation bar spacing appropriately across all three major platforms.
Layout tweaks were made to account for Display Cut-Outs now that the apps are all being built on API 35.
Adepticadian will now hide the shareable QR code if you haven’t set up a user profile yet (previously showed an unusable QR code).

BLUF: Work has continued on untangling the shared-code debacle introduced in September, with code cleanup and UI adjustments being propagated across Foundation, Adepticadian, and Archetypist.

BLUF: After digging himself into a programming hole in an attempt to consolidate shared code between Foundation, Adepticadian, and Archetypist… Josh thinks he’s almost dug his way out.

UiTools has been upgraded with a wider range of pre-made Composables for commonly used UI elements, like text boxes and expandable cards.
EdgeFadeLists has been upgraded to require less boilerplate code while trying to standardize elements like inter-item padding.
Navigation has been updated to more closely match Material style in landscape mode, with a centered side NavigationRail and the ToolBar indented.
Updated Settings layout with a more standardized card-style interface and button placements.

Next Week

#8: A Foundational Check-in

Since April of 2024, Bridge Supplies has pivoted our focus towards developing a Compose Multiplatform template app for use by the public called Foundation, while rebuilding our existing published apps to use it as a base. How have things progressed so far, and how will this work continue going forward?

Over the last ~5 months, we’ve gone through many milestones.

We’ve published 11 releases of the open-source Foundation Compose Multiplatform template app, beginning in early June.
A 12th release is expected before the end of October, bringing the public version to v1.10.0 using Compose Multiplatform 1.7.
In August we released a closed-source Foundation-based recreation of our Adepticadian app, which is currently available via public beta as v2.0.0.
A v2.0.1 of Adepticadian built with v1.10.0 of Foundation is also expected by the end of October, estimated at 95% complete.
The v3.0.0 of our other Law of One-focused app, Archetypist, has also begun, with an expected public release by the end of October, also built with the v1.10.0 Foundation base. Overall completion is currently around 60% (design language, glossary, and settings are near-final, with the remaining work to be updated card screens and art).

During the development of these projects, we have committed to a weekly Project Updates post scheduled for every Sunday, intended to summarize the prior week’s work and to anticipate the next week’s work. Since August my Sundays have been occupied by a weekly personal event, so I have resorted to making Project Update posts on the following Monday, but back-dating it to Sunday.

Going forward, the Project Updates post day will be officially shifted to be Fridays, with an updated post format to give more specific detail on only the current projects actually in active development (as opposed to listing every app and their status). Friday’s post will be intended to summarize work completed Mon-Fri of that week, as well as the expected immediate to-do list for the next week. I will also attempt to include expected release dates and currently in-progress version numbers for both open- and closed- source projects.

As for future projects and goals, here’s what we’ve got coming down the pipeline in 2024.

Public, full versions (not beta) of both Adepticadian v2 and Archetypist v3 will be released by the end of 2024.
The next app we intend to refactor with Foundation will be Class Warfare, our turn-based offline tactics game. Due to it being more recently built with Compose in 2023, we anticipate its refactor to not be as resource-intensive as the others.
Foundation v2 will be released by the end of 2024, including project updates from the final versions of Adepticadian, Archetypist, and Class Warfare.

Looking forward to 2025…

We intend to begin work on The Skews app, built off of author Jared Woods’ Janthopoyism Skews System.
We will begin developing our concept for the Logos for Law of One self-reflection journaling app with futurist Michell Zappa.
We will rework the in-progress Full Circle Leadership app from Spring ‘24 to use the Foundation base, with additional work to be done after we solicit usability feedback from both Enspiral’s Alanna Irving and Microsolidarity’s Rich Bartlett.

Lately, as I try to figure out what I want to do with my life post-tech industry layoffs earlier this year, many possibilities have crossed my mind. My current curiosity is to determine whether producing my own educational content on how to build an app using Foundation would be useful, or perhaps to provide private 1-1 lessons in person or virtually. Hopefully, before the end of 2024, I will be able to announce whichever pathway I’ve decided to take.

I firmly believe that pets are brought into our lives for two main reasons.

1. For them to teach us empathy.

2. For us to teach them identity.

The following section was originally written in the immediate hours following her peaceful passing at home.

Jolene changed my life, receiving her as a gift for my 11th birthday. I grew up reading Calvin & Hobbes comics, and always wanted a “tiger” pal of my own. When my mom introduced me to “Jolyn” at the Animal Rescue League, she was the last of her litter still with her mom. After bringing her home I renamed her Jolene/Jojo, and she quickly made herself at home with my parents’ black cat Pepper and our small white dog Baby.

Over the years she showed herself as a fierce and loyal companion. She refused to stay a housecat, escaping outside whenever we weren’t looking, getting into fights with neighborhood cats to earn a missing chip out of her right ear that would last her whole life. Sometimes she’d meow at us from outside our second story windows, leaving us to only guess how she made it out this time. Sometimes we’d find “Jolene-y Houdini” hiding in blanket baskets or behind any furniture with just enough space. And she made sure to let you know she did not like sitting on laps for more than 5 seconds at a time.

Fast forward through me leaving for college, us selling the house I grew up in, me working in the Boston area for 7 years, and Jolene transitioning to an indoor cat while living with my mom. In 2022 I was able to move Jolene back into my own apartment in RI, in what I like to call her “retirement home”. But alas, she wasn’t done yet, oh no. Even though her kidneys, arthritis, and age were catching up with her, she even managed to catch a mouse in my space at age 18! With me still working from home, she also allowed herself to ~experiment~ being a lapcat, and become a lapcat she absolutely did. Soon I’d be struggling to get work done because whenever I sat at my desk, she saw it as an opportunity for a nap and wouldn’t stop letting me know she wanted UP, damnit!

She has always been stubbornly brave. Even when the surprise malignant tumor in her nose was giving her pain, she always made sure she was near me and my mom as we’ve watched her these last few days. She visibly showed her love for her humans, including the friends and family who have watched her when I’ve been away. She knew she was loved back as well, and never feared that we had each other’s backs through thick and thin (even if it meant meowing at the bathroom door every time I was in there for more than a minute 😹).

So, this is a celebration of her life and everything she’s meant to me, my family, and friends that got to know her, and what we’ve done for her: give her love, companionship, and an opportunity to become the best Jolene she could possibly be.

Love grows when shared. You’ll be in my heart forever, sweetheart. ❤️

That evening, either as a response to the release of stress or a communion with the recently passed, I felt her energy bouncing around the walls of the apartment we’ve shared the last two years, joyful to be released from that old bag of bones. She was happy to have graduated.

I’ve never been a religious person. My spiritual path has gone from teenage atheist, to agnosticism, apatheism, and absurdism. Nowadays I’ve come to accept that materialism can’t possibly explain the breadth of recorded experiences, and to be open to the unexplainable. That has led me to entertain some fascinating stories, such as the Law of One channelings by L/L Research, which I find myself mentioning a lot nowadays.

Posed as a series of questions to an extraterrestrial entity in the 1980s (continuing to today with other entites), the channelings paint an interesting potential picture of the nature of existence. Its primary focuses cover the unity of all things, the distinction between “service to self” and “service to others”, and the graduation of our consciousness through a series of “densities” via a form of reincarnation.

Through sharing love with our lower density companions, we permanently raise them up to that next level of existence beside us, showing them the beginning of their path of individuality and personal expressions of love.

Questioner: So more and more second-density entities are making it into third density. Can you give me an example of a second-density entity coming into third density, say, in the recent past?

Ra: I am Ra. Perhaps the most common occurrence of second-density graduation during third-density cycle is the so-called pet.

The animal which is exposed to the individualizing influences of the bond between animal and third-density entity, this individuation causes a sharp rise in the potential of the second-density entity so that upon the cessation of physical complex the mind/body complex does not return unto the undifferentiated consciousness of that species, if you will.

While we raise up our companions, they aide our own evolution as well, pushing us along the positive path of service to others.

Austin: … I was wondering if you could give any insight into how we might deepen that sort of relationship with our pets to help them on their spiritual journeys.

Q’uo: … We would suggest that as the pet is related to by the owner, that the love which the owner feels for the pet be expressed in any way possible, and in every opportunity possible, in order that the love of the owner for the pet is invested in the pet so that it is much likened unto a seed that begins to grow within the pet and the pet then begins to feel a loving response for the owner, as it feels the love from the owner to it. This is a reciprocal opportunity to give that which is understanding, love, compassion, to the pet so that it may feel engulfed by the open-hearted unconditional love of the owner. This is a situation which is most usually accomplished over a long period of time, usually measured in years, for the experience of the pet and the owner to reach the full fruition of the pet being invested to the degree that the next incarnation that it will experience will be that of the third-density entity.

Thus, there is the type of giving and taking of love and light that is most beneficial between the pet and the owner. The owner also benefits in great degree by being of service to the pet so that in its own polarization process, the owner moves further and further along the positive path as the pet has become the vehicle, not only for the pet’s evolution, but for the owner’s evolution as well.

The bonds we forge with our pets during this incarnation are unbreakable, as a true recognition of the Oneness of all things.

G: Several of us have been dealing with the death of one of the second-density entities that we call pets. … Is there a particular spiritual or metaphysical reason why our pets have a relatively short lifespan?

Q’uo: … The span of life for all sentient beings is that which is infinite. Within your third-density illusion, the infinity of beingness of the second-density pet is limited in many cases, in this illusion, to a certain number of years, as you would call them. During these years of exchanging love and companionship back and forth from pet to you, from you to pet, you are aiding this second-density being in his own evolution so that at some point it may also become a third-density being because of its relationship with you; and its life continues as third-density being, though it ended as a second-density being.

We would also suggest to you that as it is within what you would call the inner planes … this being is frequently with you, in your dreams, in your experience of the daily round of activities, when it may be there to greet you in some way that may or may not be recognized, that when there is the connection of hearts, whether they be second or third density, this connection has been expressed in the life path of both entities.

This is a connection that cannot be broken, for it represents the connection of the One Infinite Creator’s love that created all that there is in the infinite universe; and through this love made what we see as the planets and stars and the galaxies as the love became light.

In love and light you are connected to your pets, and they are always with you while you are here. And when you leave your body and move as an eternal being into the inner realms to the higher planes, you will see them again. And this time you will recognize them for who they are, the One Creator, as are you, knowing Itself through each expression of any form of life on every planet in the infinite universe.

As I still await the receipt of Jolene’s urn, my family has been imagining ideas on how to best honor her life and effect on us all, like needle-felting her incredibly soft fur, 3D-printing from her old photos, and decorating the urn with Lego and flowers.

The feelings I have had over the last week+ has been a mixture of gratitude for the experience of being her caretaker, relief over being relieved of service and the cessation of her suffering, and bittersweet sadness that reminds me of the utmost importance and power of positive companionship in our lives.

Jolene cannot be replaced, yet her energies and memories live on through everyone who witnessed her. If that’s not emblematic of One-ness, I do not know what is.
