So…

Yeah… barely anything.

I’ll be brutally honest, i wasn’t able to push myself to do anything productive with my life this year. The reason? Mental health!!! Hooray!!!!!

After my break from Discord, i actually thought i was going to start taking life seriously. I was genuinely happy with myself and proud that i was able to go without checking on Discord every few minutes. And even now i don’t check on it that often. I am still online, but i don’t really seek out attention that much as i used to. If someone messages me, i message back. If i message someone and they take a bit to respond, then i’ll wait for the notification. That was one of the things that i had a problem with and i’m glad that i don’t seek much attention. ~~i do maybe send a lot of memes and art to friends but that doesn’t really count :3~~

Anyways, what really got me was in the middle of summer roughly, when i got a really discomforting message from my ex that i didn’t take well at all, especially because i was chilling out with people and having a great time. I don’t wanna go into detail about my relationship with them (not everything needs to be known publically!!!) but long story short, i ended up cutting ties with them and in the process, left communities that they were in just so i could avoid them at all cost.

And… yeah.

After that, i wasn’t feeling well whatsoever. Even after half a year i’m still not feeling well actually! However, i’m not going to take another break from Discord just because of that incident, especially because my friends who i knew for a good amount of time missed me a lot, and honestly i don’t see the reason why i would take a break. Instead, i’m going to do something that i know helps me with keeping my mind in control. Web development!!

I’m slowly getting back on the grind that i was on at the start of last year, because making and maintaining a website is pretty freaking COOL!!!

Coming back to it felt refreshing. Back in my comfy space :3 Which speaking of, it’s going to be the 1 year anniversary of this freaking thing!!! And btw, i’m not planning to take it down anytime soon! Not in a million years! I do plan on redoing internal stuff, like switching distros and using a different mail server solution. When will i do that? ion know :3c

Now, about something else

The internet has become a deeply rotted place. I’ve been watching how basically the entire internet is becoming a cesspool of not just AI generated dogshit, but also saw websites actually implementing AI everywhere they could.

YouTube is the worst one. I’ve seen recently how many many many many many MANY creators had their channels wrongfully banned because they literally replaced their entire moderation system with AI. I’ve also seen multiple AI generated thumbnails with literally zero editing done to them, aswell as auto-dubbed videos that i immediately want to avoid. Not because i think auto-dubbing is a bad thing, it’s because THEY DID IT POORLY. I watched a couple auto-dubbed videos to see if the auto-dubbing feature actually makes the video watchable, and it’s really not. The voice sounds very unnatural and unpleasant to listen to. Robotic basically.

And, my god. The amount of times i saw AI generated not just art, but images in general. It just makes me want to gouge out my eyes every time i see that PISS YELLOW TINT in AI pictures. And don’t get me started on AI generated art. I hate having to think twice about whether or not a piece of art that i see, especially if it heavily resembles an anime style, is AI generated.

And now, basically the theft of personal computing thanks to the AI bubble from big tech corpos that want to CONSOOM DA ARTIFECAL INTEL thecomputerinside LIGENCE. Whenever i get a job, i planned on buying myself a Ryzen 9 mini PC that i can connect an eGPU into instead of upgrading my desktop, which is what i’m using, because i don’t like desktops and having to clean them, it’s a chore. But i guess i’m gonna have to wait until the bubble pops, AND IT FUCKING WILL and THEN buy one. I dunno, we’ll see

The point is

What i wanna say is if you’re someone who posts a lot on social media, whether that’d be Twitter, Reddit, Instagram, whatever, leave and try making your own website. Even if you know nothing about making one, do it.

Trust me, hosting your own website is much better than social media because you don’t have to be scared of big tech shoving AI down your throat, or even getting you banned for something that you didn’t do, but only because they didn’t like what you said. Plus, you’re also doing yourself a favor by avoiding the toxic slump that most social media has become nowayads. And hey, you can make it entirely your own!!! Either manually write everything, or use a static site generator like i am!!! Hugo i think is one of the best choices for static websites, and hell, i would go as far as to say to take a minimal Hugo theme, and modify it heavily to suit your style! The world is your oyster!

Plus there definitely is no shortage of helpful information on things like HTML and CSS. W3School is probably the best place for learning how to make a website, and places like NeoCities and NekoWeb are very happy to host the site for you! You can go the extra route and host it all yourself with either a VPS or from your network with a reverse proxy (cloudflare will prolly help you with that).

I have ideas on what to write, and especially something that’ll help people with making Windows usable, so stay tuned for that ;>

As for myself and my messy mental health, hopefully next year i will get the courage to find a job and at least switch off of NVIDIA. They recently published the 590 driver on Linux, which basically marks the end for feature updates for not just the 10 and 9 series GTX cards, but also my 11 year old GTX 750 Ti. o7 to the king of budget. And also, i wanna use Wayland desktops without the plethora of issues that plagues NVIDIA GPUs using the proprietary driver.

I took a break from Discord for 4 months. Was it worth it?

What Happened?

Yeah. Back in January, i took a break from the “Internet” (Discord basically) for many reasons. The main ones being that every day i was thinking that the people i knew for a long time, and hung around with a ton, hated me without telling me. I also got out of a very rocky relationship around the same time and it affected me really badly. I’ve also had the constant thought going through my head that i’m a bad person and that i should go rot in hell and never come back. So yeah, i was mega depressed and was very much on the edge.

So i decided to logged out and uninstall Discord on all of my devices and take time for myself until i felt better and forgot about all of it. I did stay in contact with some people but haven’t messaged them first, only respond to their messages if they message me.

While i was away, i wanted to do something that i’ve always wanted to do but never really worked on it that much,
A WEBSITE.

And so, this website came into existence.

The Website in question

I thought “hmm, maybe if i work on something that’ll make me not think about bad things, it could help out a lot!”, and it turns out i was right! Whenever i worked on the webiste, i only thought about all the things i could do with it and nothing else! And so i just kept working on it. I wasn’t even playing that many games at the time, only work on the site, because it was super fun! I didn’t know if i should use Hugo and find a nice looking theme or write everything manually in HTML/CSS. You can probably tell what i went with.

I was also experimenting with what i could do beyond what the theme is made to be able to do, so i started slowly modifying the theme to add more pages and more functionality to it. It was super fun!!! I even thought of making my own theme, but i really really liked what i had now, so i continued working on what i had.

This might sound a little bit crazy, but i wanna say that my website was kind of like my therapist, and every time i worked on it, it was like a therapy session.

Every time i worked on it, i felt nice and relaxed. I was listening to music, i wasn’t being angry, i wasn’t worried that anyone’s gonna judge me or anything! I was even visiting other personal websites of people and checking out what others made! People are super duper talented!!!

I could’ve probably made something like other people did, but i still felt like what i have is already pretty good and looks nice.

So now that i had a website…

…i thought i could do share with visitors what i like to do. That being avatar making!

I created a few avatars before, but didn’t do much with them besides put them up on my avatar world in VRChat, but i thought i could fill up my website with more stuff, so i created a page specifically for them (and other media i create in the future). Afterwards i made a few more avatars, mainly a bunch of Eeveelutions, and i’m pretty proud with every single one i made, especially the Sylveon one, especially because of the ribbons that were pretty tricky to get right. I actually wanna make more avatars, but i don’t know how to start. I could maybe create something original! Besides avatars, i also wanted to revisit my plane world that i started a long time ago but stopped working on it because i lost interest in it :P

Another thing i wanted to share with visitors are my media recommendations! I spent a long time perfecting the layout (it’s still not perfect hehe :3c) of the page and adding all the stuff i’ve consumed and played. Who knows, maybe someone could check out the stuff i like and enjoy it themselves!

Blogging tho… really hard.

I mostly used the blogging part of my website to write tutorials about things that isn’t really easy to find with a google search, like getting the VRChat SDK to work on Linux. It actually put my website on the first page when google searching for the topic!

But still, thinking about what to write in a blog is kinda hard, and gets me a bit nervous, because i’m afraid that i’m not gonna write something correctly,,,,,,, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

The one thing i’m very worried about is writing something that is plain wrong. I’m not smart, i make mistakes, and i get things wrong all the time,,,,,,, But that’s why i setup a email server! So people can let me know if whatever i wrote is plain wrong and i fix the mistake!

Back on topic

Right, the break.

Besides the website, i thought i could probably get a job and start saving up some money and start renting an apartment, but i’m still kinda scared of getting a job.

It’s not that i don’t want a job and i don’t want to work, i would love to work and earn some cash!!! But the process of getting one is the thing that scares me. What do i say in the interview, how do i reply to their question, am i gonna be accepted in this economy? That stuff i’m really scared of, and even still i haven’t made any effort into looking for a job. But that HAS to change in summer. When it gets warmer, i’m gonna force myself to look for a job and apply for one. I need to upgrade my laptop and buy some things before i start saving up money for renting an apartment.

I’m also gonna be busy with family stuff probably, which is (probably not) gonna be fun… And not just for me.

But anyways!

Yeah, i’ve never felt better!!! I will say, the break probably should’ve been a lot shorter, at least 2 weeks, but i wanted the break to last longer so i can take as much time for myself as i felt like i needed. I do feel a lot better and even if my brain tries to think about bad things, i don’t really feel anything! Huzzah!

But now that my break is over, am i going to abandon my website? Hell no!

I like my website, i like it a lot, and i want to keep writing tutorials about things i’ve learned that others haven’t or just couldn’t, aswell as add more stuff to my creations page! I probably won’t be working on it that much as i used to since i’m probably going to spend a lot of time with friends again, but i definitely won’t be abandoning it anytime soon!!!

So yeah, i would say that the 4 month break from Discord is totally worth it, and if you also have issues with mental health, anxiety, and related, you should also take some time for yourself. Maybe not 4 months but definitely around 2 weeks at least.

I might even expand to a YouTube channel in the future, but that’s for the future. I’m not in a great position to start a YouTube channel. :P

Stay away from Mozilla and Firefox!!!

ℹ️ This blogpost is really just me taking out my frustrations on Mozilla and their dumb decisions. It’s not very well written, and some things i might’ve gotten wrong.

I’m done. I’m genuinely done. I don’t wanna use Firefox anymore. Even if i strip out all telemetry bull$#!^ out of it, i just don’t want to use it, and neither should you. You wanna license my data and everything i do in the browser???¹ and have a “acceptable use policy” in a browser?²

There have been countless posts, blogs and YouTube videos around the internet talking about Mozilla’s questionable choices that they’ve made. In fact, they aren’t a browser company anymore, and they don’t care about Firefox. They focus more on advertising and AI (1). I’m sick and tired of AI, i don’t care about it, i don’t wanna hear about it anymore. AI shouldn’t be talked about as a trend, but rather as a tool that people can use instead of relying on search engines that sometimes just give you bull$#!^ results, straight up.

They also engage in… lemme check… in activism?

Lemme get this straight. They would rather engage in activism, advertising and AI than to focus on making the two products they’re most known for, Firefox and Thunderbird. NOBODY CARES. Literally nobody cares about what Mozilla is doing besides Firefox and Thunderbird. All they are really doing is giving the tech community something to talk about, because we have to talk about it and put Mozilla on the news. Like come on man, just make the damn browser and make it comparable to Chrome. They’re not even funding the development of Firefox!!! Go see for yourself, go to their funding page and CTRL+F on all the pages under it and see if Firefox is mentioned anywhere.

Don’t get me wrong, i’m all for the Web to not be controlled by big tech and filled with trackers and ads and crap like that, but you don’t do it by using words and giving us privacy alternatives to things we DON’T want to see be filled on the Web, we want a browser (and an email client) that doesn’t spy on us, doesn’t have telemetry, and doesn’t want to sell us some whatever service nobody is going to care about, and in the end it’ll just be a waste of money for the company.

Actions speak louder than words.

Anyways, i deleted my Firefox account and moved to Waterfox, which is Firefox based and is mostly free of any Mozilla crap. You can still sign in with a Firefox/Mozilla account but i already deleted that and will never use it again.

Is Waterfox any better than Firefox? Maybe, probably. They used to be owned by system1 which is a privacy-focused advertising company, but have split off them since July of 2023, and even they stated that they only wanted to work on Waterfox and not include any crap whatsoever³. How much can they be trusted? ¯\ _(ツ)_ /¯ but since the project separated anyway, that’s probably negligible now.

“Why not use Brave or Ungoogled Chromium?” If it hasn’t properly happened already⁴, uBlock Origin is no longer available on Chromium-based browsers, and i don’t like Chromium-based browsers in general. :P

I have nothing against Brave at all. The AI and Crypto stuff is super negligible. You really shouldn’t care about it at all, just disable it and move on. I don’t know how good Brave’s adblocking is when it comes to YouTube, but uBlock has been the go-to for me and if i can’t use it, then it isn’t worth my time. However i do have everything against the co-founder Brendan Eich for being a piece of $#!^ person⁵ and i hope he also loses his position at Brave.

What do?

Get out! Leave Firefox completely until it splits off Mozilla and everything Mozilla-related is removed from it.

Creating a 3D sprite avatar for VRChat (DOOM/Duke Nukem 3D)

Previously titled "Creating a 2D (DOOM/Duke Nukem 3D) avatar for VRChat". Why do people wanna make PNG avatars?

Explanation

There are a ton of avatars in VRChat. A lot of them super creative and amazing looking, some are just memes, some straight up just a plain 2D image slapped onto a flat surface.

I’ve always wanted to make an avatar that works like objects from 2.5D games like DOOM, Duke Nukem 3D, Blood etc. Y’know, the ones that are always facing towards you, and the enemies that only have 8 viewing angles. Yeah.

I wanted to make something like that in VRChat but couldn’t find anything useful whatsoever. Literally nothing… that is, until i found a shader for Unity that does exactly what i want!

Error.mdl’s Retro Sprites shader!

A shader that perfectly replicates the “pseudo-3D” sprites of those old first person games. It even comes with a script that allows you to create a texture array for use with the shader which is pretty nice.

The first avatar i made using this shader was my 2D Niko avatar, which includes the sun aswell! After that i made tons more!!! OFF characters, skeleton brothers from UNDERTALE, Ness from Earthbound and Kris, Susie, Ralsei and Noelle from DELTARUNE.

With this new-found knowledge, i wanted to share how i made this avatar with other people aswell since there’s pretty much nothing about making these kinds of avatars, and the only way to find out how to make them is by ripping already existing avatars from VRChat and looking around the ripped project. However, at the time i didn’t have a website… well i did, but it was very messy and i just didn’t like the look of it anymore, so i started from scratch!

This tutorial will tell you how to make these avatars, even with walking animations! It is going to take a while so make sure to have some patience ready.

Preview and Requirements

This is how our end result will look like. Walking animations not pictured.

Here’s what you’re gonna need:

VRChat account with “New User” trust rank in order to upload and use the avatar,
A VRChat Avatar project,
Retro Sprites shader,
and the sprites themselves.

When downloading the shader, all you need to do is just click “Code”, and then “Download ZIP”.

The archive will have a retrosprites folder inside. It contains the shader, aswell as the script that creates the texture array needed for the shader so we can put sprites onto it. Just drag it into the Assets folder of your Unity project and it should import everything.

Preparing the sprites

Okay… so this is basically going to be the reason why you’ve spent almost 2 hours making the avatar, preparing the sprites.

First, you obviously have to obtain the sprites you’re going to be using, doesn’t matter how or where.

Next, you wanna make sure the size of the sprites are exactly 32x32, 64x64, 128x128 etc. If you don’t, Unity is going to stretch out the sprite and it’ll look horrible, and you can’t really do anything about it.

Lemme explain.

This Kris sprite is 18x38 pixels in size. If i import it into Unity…

This is how it’s going to look like.

Now obviously, the sprite isn’t anywhere near 2048 pixels big, so let’s reduce the size to 32, apply import settings that we’re going to use and now i’m going to show you how it would roughly look like if we apply it to the shader.

yyyyyeeeeeeaaaaaahhhhhh………. looks like absolute horse crap

So we need to fix this. It isn’t a hard fix, but it’s a time consuming fix unfortunately. gl :3c

Basically, we have to resize the canvas of the sprites so that it’s exactly 32 or 64 or 128… pixels, so our shader can be displayed properly.

In my case, the Kris sprite exceeds 32 pixels, which means i have to make the canvas 64x64 pixels in size.

This is how the end result should look like. Yes, it is small but it has to be like that unfortunately.

You basically have to do this with every single sprite you have. Every. Single. One

There’s probably a way to automate the process, but i don’t know how.

Also, notice how there’s a small gap between the legs and the bottom of the sprite? That’s needed there so that it looks like you’re bouncing up and down while walking, because in the walking sprite, that gap isn’t there, so it looks like you’re going up and down while walking. If your sprite doesn’t have that gap between the legs and the bottom, you might have to move the layer of the sprite up by one pixel in order for the trick to work.

You also might have to flip the sprites horizontally because it will be flipped when shown in the shader.

ℹ️ Keep in mind that when flipping the left and right directions of the walking sprites, they’re still going to be that same direction pre-flipping, so make sure to rename them so you won’t get confused!

So for example, if you flip the left direction sprite and is now facing right, it’s still going to be the left sprite.

Once you have all of the sprites fixed up, now you have to import them into Unity and apply the correct import settings so the sprites will look as they should.

They are as follows:

Alpha Is Transparency > Yes
Wrap Mode > Clamp
Filter Mode > Point (no filter)
Max Size > Based on the image size
Compression > None

That looks much better! Again it will look small but you can’t really do anything about it besides resizing the object.

Using the shader

Now let’s start with the shader and the material for our avatar.

Let’s start with creating a Texture List where were going to put our sprites in.

Right Click > Create > Texture Lists > 2D Texture List

You can leave the name as is, it doesn’t matter really.

This is where we’re gonna put our sprites in. Set the value of Tex Array to the number of sprites you have and put them in this specific order!!!

Up (facing away from camera)
Left
Down (facing towards camera)
Right

Do this for each frame of the walking animation aswell until you end up with something like this:

Once that’s done, we can now create the texture array that we can use in the shader.

In the menu bar, there is a “Tools” menu which has the script to create a texture array from the texture list we created.

Now select the texture list, set Aniso level to 0 just in case and make sure that the filter and wrap mode are the same as the sprite’s import settings.

and create the texture array!

Now we need to create a material for our avatar.

Right Click > Create > Material

Set the shader to Error.mdl > Retro Sprites v2 > Sprite Cutout, put the texture array into the shader, set the number of viewing angles to however many you have and set the number of animation frames to again, however many you have, in my case, i have 3 (idle, and two walking frames).

Now create a Quad inside the scene and drag the material onto it.

Success!

If you got the left and right directions backwards, just tick “Invert Rotation Direction” in shader settings and it should be the correct direction.

Avatar Base

This is a pretty painless part.

Simply make a empty object and drag the quad with the shader into it.

Select the empty avatar object and in the inspector, add a animator and a avatar descriptor.

Now we wanna make sure that the sprite is facing the right direction and that it’s the right height.

Make sure that the position coordinates of the avatar object is x0 y0 z0.

Now set the sprite/quad position coordinates to x0 y0.5 z0 (adjust the y coordinates until the quad is perfectly aligned with the avatar direction line) and rotate it by 180 degrees in the y direction so it faces the direction line.

Also adjust the View Position so it’s located between the eyes of the sprite (or wherever you want really it doesn’t matter :P).

Animation

ℹ️ You may skip this part by downloading files from this repository and putting the avatar together.

This is a pretty painful part. Go figure.

Yeah, this won’t be fun at all, because you HAVE to make sure that everything is perfectly set.

Start by adding the animation tab to the bottom window by clicking the three dots on the right side > Add Tab > Animation.

Select the avatar and create a animation clip. Name it “idle”.

Now click the record button, select the sprite/quad and adjust the “Manual Frame Number” so that it appears in the animation timeline. Click the record button again to stop recording and make sure the value is set to 0 on the left side of the animation timeline.

For the walking animation, create a new animation clip and name it “walk”. Click the record button again and adjust the “Manual Frame Number” again so it appears in the timeline again. Hold CTRL and scroll down to zoom out in the timeline so you can see 0:10, 0:20, 0:30 and 0:40 in the timeline.

Select the 0:10 timestamp and change the “Manual Frame Number” value to 1,

then select 0:20 and set the value to 0,

then select 0:30 and set it to 2,

and finally, 0:40 and set it to 0.

You might notice that it doesn’t look quite right. Because it doesn’t, all thanks to Unity!

Why does it look like that? At the bottom of the Animation window there’s a button labeled “Curves”, click it.

This is why. Fuck you Unity.

We have to adjust these so they are straight instead of curvy.

When you click on an animation key, you’ll see this:

All you have to do is rotate the line so it’s vertical instead of horizontal, so grab the edge of the line and rotate it until it’s positioned vertically. Do this for other animation keys until there are no curves.

Like this!

So that takes care of the animation clips, now we need to put it all together in a animation controller. Thankfully, Unity automatically created one when we recorded the animation clips so we can use it. Just make sure the animation controller is enabled.

And yes, we’re using the Animator, not the Playable Layers from the Avatar Descriptor, they don’t work.

Anyways, open the animation controller that Unity created and go to Parameters.

We need two parameters:

VelocityX as Float
VelocityZ as Float

These are the parameters the game itself uses and we’ll use them to detect player movement so the walking animation can play.

So, what you wanna do is make 4 transitions from the idle animation to the walking animation and one transition from the walking animation to the idle animation.

Now for every transition, make sure that:

Has Exit Time: No
Exit Time: 0
Transition Duration (s): 0
Transition Offset: 0

this is where pain begins

Here is a list of conditions you have to set for the 4 transitions that go from the idle animation to the walking animation:

1. VelocityZ > Less > -0.1
1. VelocityX > Less > -0.1
1. VelocityZ > Greater > 0.1
1. VelocityX > Greater > 0.1

Now for the one transition going from the walking animation to the idle animation:

VelocityZ > Less > 0.1
VelocityX > Less > 0.1
VelocityZ > Greater > -0.1
VelocityX > Greater > -0.1

And i believe that’s everything!

Testing the avatar

Now it’s time to test build the avatar to see if every is working correctly. You might get a error where you can just click “Auto Fix” and it’ll let you build the avatar.

FIRST TRYYYYY!!!!!

…that was actually a lot smoother than i thought it was gonna be lol.

Still, big success!!

From here, you can basically experiment with what animations you can and can’t play. I know for some things you might need to add a empty humanoid skeleton so the game thinks your avatar is a humanoid avatar and let’s you do a lot more with the avatar, but for me this is more than good enough. You can also adjust the speed of the walking animation in the animation controller if it’s too slow or too fast for your liking.

If you wanna experiment more, check out the Animation Parameters documentation, there are a lot of parameters that the game uses that you can use for various different animations.

Conclusion

I’m so happy that i finally got to write this post. I’ve really wanted to share my knowledge about this because who knows, there might be people who wanna make these kinds of avatars but never knew how to make them! I’m just hoping search engines will pick up on it and maybe bump me up in search results because there’s literally NOTHING. Literally no information on how to make these kinds of avatars. Maybe you could’ve stumbled across the Retro Sprites shader but you’d still have to find out how to use it on your own… until now!!!

That’s gonna be it for now tho! I’ll probably start making more avatars when i decide to fully come back to VRChat. Right now i don’t get on much besides like hanging out with someone from time to time.

Talking a bit

Oh my god oh my god oh my god oh MY GOD I absolutely LOVE the Trinity Desktop. I absolutely love how KDE 3.5 looks and feels like. I kinda wish they didn’t go with KDE 4 and kept updating the older desktop. I just like how Operating Systems and Desktops looked like back then. They might’ve been clunky, weird and quirky but that’s what i like about them.

Sadly I can’t daily drive Trinity myself. Being on KDE Wayland has been amazing. I still can’t believe that i can finally be on Wayland without any graphical glitches or any hiccups (tho plasma does crash sometimes under heavy load :P). I just wanna enjoy being on a Wayland desktop using a 10+ year old GPU that might soon won’t be supported anymore, rip.

Back to Trinity, i would definitely daily drive the Trinity desktop if they updated the sound system to use PulseAudio/PipeWire and if they get it to work on Wayland. Porting it to Wayland is gonna be a BIG challenge since not only are they working with very old code, the team behind TDE is small, so we probably won’t be seeing the desktop run on Wayland anytime soon (unless i’m missing important developments, which knowing myself, i probably am lol).

Trinity also has very low RAM usage, so it’s perfect for systems that don’t have a lot of RAM to spare. It’s also pretty freakin’ fast, comparable to XFCE and MATE in terms of speed.

Installing the Desktop

The best distro to install Trinity on i think is probably Debian, but you can also install it on other distros, like Ubuntu, Fedora and even Arch! Check this page for more info on which distros are supported.

For now, go ahead and grab the netinstaller for Debian and install Debian without the GNOME desktop (aswell as the “Debian desktop environment” option!!).

We don’t need any extra desktop, just a minimal Debian install.

Once the installation is done and you’ve booted into the newely installed Debian, login and make sure the system is up to date.

Afterwards, we need to add The repository of the Trinity desktop to the sources.list by following these instructions from the official website.

Before trying to sync the repos, make sure to first install the GPG signing key from the same page as above under “Import GPG signing key” section!!! Afterwards, you may sync repos and install the Trinity desktop by either:

Installing the full desktop (sudo apt install tde-trinity)
or installing only the base desktop (sudo apt install tdebase-trinity).

You should also add firefox-esr pipewire pipewire-pulse wireplumber pavucontrol volumeicon-alsa while you’re at it.

Firefox because the Konqueror browser pre-installed hasn’t really changed much from it’s KDE 3.5 version, so you can’t really do much on the web. You can of course use whatever browser you want, Firefox is just an example, and honestly i wouldn’t daily drive it after that entire ToU fiasco happened.

Pipewire because obviously, Pavucontrol because KMix is basically useless in today’s day and age, Volumeicon for the same reason. Unless KMix and Trinity’s sound system gets updated to properly support Pipewire.

You might also wanna install kpackage-trinity for a Trinity native package manager, aswell as some fun stuff like extra screensavers! (basically install every screensaver related package for Trinity), and maybe even extra themes and wallpapers/artwork.

After install, make sure the tdm service is enabled, aswell as enable pipewire services as the user and reboot the system.

Ta-da!

When you first try to login into TDE, you’re gonna have to go through the first time setup, which just asks you a couple of questions related to your keyboard and styling of TDE.

And here we are! Look how beautiful it looks… well sorta!

I would change the colors and the wallpaper to something that looks nicer, remove some desktop icons, aswell as make the font a big bigger.

Something like this! Here are the customization options:

Background: Alta Badia
Colors: Solaris
Fonts: only increased size to 12 for all fonts
Icons: Crystal SVG (it’s fine the way it is)
Splash Screen: Unified
Style + Window Decorations: Plastik

Post Install chit chat

From this point, you may customize the desktop however you want, install any other Trinity application you wanna try out, and enjoy your… uhh new? desktop environment!

When it comes to theming GTK and Qt, you’ll probably have to resort to lxappearance and qt5ct + qt6ct and probably create your own themes. Oh, and you’re also probably gonna need to manually configure NetworkManager because Debian for some reason does things differently. I don’t even know how i got it to work honestly. lol

If you don’t feel like installing Trinity by yourself and instead use a distro that comes preinstalled with it, you should go ahead and try Q4OS! It has both a KDE spin and a Trinity spin, which is what it’s best known for.

They have their own “package manager” which is really just a list of scripts that installs whatever software you picked from the list, in the style of a InstallShield Wizard which i think is pretty neat!

But yeah, since Trinity is basically just a modern continuation of KDE 3.5, all of the software made for KDE 3.5 is available to install, and if you installed the full desktop meta-package, you get all of it! Some of it might not work well, like the video players, so you might want to stick with VLC or mpv for video playback. Modern software works fine on Trinity aswell, and now that the Trinity team is starting to work on XDG desktop portal stuff, it could definitely be a strong contender as a daily driver.

You should definitely go follow TDE on Mastodon to follow the development of this desktop! I really love seeing progress being made on it, and i can’t wait for the next stable release!

Getting started with using a Linux distribution

Getting Started

Linux is complicated, i know. There are many different options to choose for a Linux distribution. Many are easy and simple to use, and others are tailored towards people who want to fine-tune the system to their needs.

There are distros that update every 6 months, some even after 2 years for stability and only push out critical security updates and patches. Those distros include Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora, openSUSE Leap etc.

There are distros that update continuously in order to provide the latest and greatest features, hardware support and bug fixes, like Arch and every other distro based on it, openSUSE Tumbleweed, Gentoo, Debian Testing, Void Linux etc.

Yeah like i said, a lot of options, and that’s why this post exists. To help you pick which distro you want to use. It will also talk about distros with special use cases, such as lightweight distros that are mainly for low end or older computers, aswell as distros for server use cases.

Let’s get started!

Before anything

ℹ️ There are a lot of Linux users on the internet who will scream at you for using this or that distro that they don’t like and will tell you to use something else (usually Arch).

Please, for the love of god, just ignore them. They don’t understand that a lot of people would just want their computer to work, and not to have to troubleshoot every small thing that would usually work on ‘general purpose’ distros.

They all set a bad example for the Linux community. Please understand that not everyone in the community is like this, even in the Arch community, and there are a lot of people who are willing to help you with any problem you face, no matter how big or small it is, instead of telling you to use Arch and ‘read the fucking manual’ (RTFM).

So don’t be scared to ask on their forums, IRC channels, Matrix or Discord server about troubleshooting issues you’re having with the distro.

General Purpose (beginner friendly)

Whether you want a computer that just works, want to play games, draw, do office work, whatever that might be, these distros are great no matter what you’re going to be doing on your computer.

They are simple, easy to use, great for beginners and have a great community that will help you with troubleshooting any issues you have while using the distro.

Linux Mint

Linux Mint is probably the best Linux distribution for general use and beginners to Linux. It is simple, easy to use, has a traditional desktop layout, comes with all the programs you need like a web browser (Firefox), Thunderbird email client, an office suite (LibreOffice), a simple update manager, an excellent App Store/Software Manager, a webapp manager and a wide selection of useful pre-installed software, aswell as an easy way to access support channels (via the Matrix webapp).

Unlike other desktop distros, Linux Mint uses it’s own desktop environment called ‘Cinnamon’, created as a fork of GNOME 3 and modified to how they see fit. It’s simple, modern and very customizable, and is definitely the flavor i recommend most people choose when picking Linux Mint.

The Software Manager has access to a ton of apps, including ones from Flathub, both free and open source and proprietary, such as GIMP, Inkscape, Krita, Kdenlive, many many many console emulators, Steam, Discord, Lutris, Bottles, Heroic (for Epic Games and GOG) and others.

Programs that aren’t verified on Flathub can be enabled by turning them on in the settings page of the Software Manager. Programs that aren’t available from both sources you’ll have to look for yourself on the Internet, like Google Chrome.

Linux Mint also comes with a Update Manager that allows you to easily update your system, set whenever you want to be notified about updates or have them be automatically installed, when to check for updates and to set the mirror region for faster download speeds.

You can also do troubleshooting from the update manager in case updates aren’t being applied or apt/apt-get is failing.

When you boot into a fresh install of Linux Mint, it will open a “Welcome” application that will guide you through updating your system, customizing the desktop, enabling the firewall, installing drivers etc.

You can customize the desktop with three different pre-installed themes: Mint-Y, Mint-X and Mint-L, aswell as a wide selection of mouse cursors.

Linux Mint also comes with a lot of beautiful wallpapers that you may find on Unsplash and each new release comes with a new set of wallpapers. You can even install the old wallpaper packs as regular packages either from the Software Manager or the terminal using apt/apt-get. You can also search for more themes and icons using both methods.

Not a big fan of the Windows-like layout or you’re more of a Mac person? No problem!

You can easily change the panel layout to tailor it to your needs!

Linux Mint allows you to install various addons/plugins made by the community to the desktop:

Extensions to extend the functionality of the entire desktop environment,
Desklets to add stuff to the desktop (think Desktop Gadgets for Windows 7),
Applets to add stuff to the panel/taskbar, and
Actions to add more right click menu functions.

You can also browse for themes from the ‘Themes’ settings page.

If you’re not on Cinnamon but want to browse for everything mentioned above, head over to the Cinnamon Spices website to browse for everything.

Different Flavors

Linux Mint also has different flavors other than Cinnamon: MATE and XFCE.

The XFCE flavor uses XFCE instead of Cinnamon, a lightweight and low resource usage desktop that’s perfect if your computer has a dual-core processor and 4GB of RAM. It still comes with the same programs as the regular ‘Cinnamon’ flavor, with the exception of some programs being replaced with XFCE counterparts, like Thunar instead of Nemo for a file manager, and Parole instead of Celluloid.

The MATE flavor uses MATE instead of Cinnamon, a fork of GNOME 2 that aims to provide the same old-school GNOME 2 desktop but updated to work on modern systems. This flavor is mainly aimed towards those who prefer the older Linux Mint desktop, which used GNOME 2 in the past or just prefer GNOME2/MATE over the other two desktop choices. Just like XFCE, the MATE flavor also comes with the same software selection but replaces some programs with MATE counterparts, like Caja instead of Nemo for a file manager.

Overall

Linux Mint is an excellent choice no matter what you’re going to do on your computer. It has everything you need and if something’s missing, you’ll easy be able to find it with the Software Manager. There’s even an pre-installed app for watching Public TV from various different countries!

Being Ubuntu based gives it an advantage since anything that’s made for Ubuntu will also work on Mint, as long as it doesn’t use “Snaps” since those are disabled on Mint.

Instead of snaps, Mint uses Flatpaks which are better audited and has a way better selection of apps. However, Mint by default hides ‘unverified’ apps which you can change from the settings page of Software Manager. ‘Unverified’ apps are apps that are published to Flathub by the community instead of the developer of the app, and while they aren’t unsafe or dangerous, it is always better to get the app directly from the developer or your distros sources than from some random individual.

Ubuntu

Overall Rating:

As much as i hate Canonical and what they’re doing with the distro, it’s still a great distribution for beginners and people who just want a computer that works and doesn’t do all the shady things Windows and macOS does. It’s also supported by many proprietary applications and usually provide downloads for Ubuntu/Debian based distros in form of .deb packages, which also work in Mint, since it’s Ubuntu based.

It’s also a really great distro for people who want to learn Linux and not just use it as a regular desktop operating system, and also a great base for a Linux distribution. Many distros choose to use Ubuntu as a base and then build their system on top of it, like Mint, Zorin OS, Linux Lite and others.

Ubuntu has an uncommon desktop layout, with a top panel and a dock on the left, but still usual to put the application menu at the bottom right, just like god intended!

Ubuntu uses a heavily modified GNOME desktop with a rather nice mix of orange and purple (my fav color :3c). It also comes with a similar arrange of programs like Mint, Firefox, Thunderbird and LibreOffice. It also includes basic GNOME apps like Nautilus for the file manager and other GNOME apps.

On top of that, it also has a driver manager and a update manager, similar to Mint but are more basic than Mint’s update manager.

Ubuntu also has it’s own software manager called ‘App Center’ which is best used for managing snaps and has basic support for system packages and not even a graphical way to install traditional .deb packages.

Since Ubuntu uses GNOME for it’s desktop, you can take advantage of that by installing the ‘Extension Manager’ (gnome-shell-extension-manager) and installing extensions to fine tune the desktop specifically for you.

You can change the entire layout of the desktop and make it look like however you want, even make it look like Windows if you’re not a big fan of the default desktop layout.

Extensions are wonderful and a big reason why i like GNOME, since you can really customize the desktop however you want. You can even make it look like macOS! (but i don’t have a screenshot of that :c)

Very flavorful

Ubuntu isn’t only limited to the GNOME desktop however. Just like Mint, it has many different flavors which use different desktop environments that you can use instead of regular Ubuntu. So… so many flavors…

Here are all of them (not in any particular order):

Kubuntu (KDE)
Xubuntu (XFCE) (Lightweight)
Ubuntu MATE (MATE)
Lubuntu (LXQt) (Lightweight)
Ubuntu Budgie (Budgie)
Ubuntu Unity (Unity) (goated as hell honestly :3c)
Ubuntu Studio (variant of Kubuntu with lot’s of multimedia software pre-installed, including Krita, Blender, Kdenlive and others. decent choice for content creation.
Ubuntu Cinnamon (Cinnamon) (no hate but why does this exist?????)
Edubuntu (education focused)
Ubuntu Kylin (使用 Kylin 桌面，适合中文使用者. 我爱中国!)

Yeah, like i said, very flavorful.

Overall

Ubuntu is a great choice of beginners definitely, but if you’re a long time user of Linux in general, i recommend striping out everything and anything snap related and replace it with Flatpaks. Snaps are bad, and while they are certainly getting better, the reputation of snap isn’t going to get any better if Canonical continues pushing them more than local packages, which are still much faster and run much better than snaps. If Canonical kept Flatpaks and Flathub pre-installed and preferred system packages over snaps, they definitely wouldn’t have as bad of a reputation with the Linux community as it does now.

In any case, this post isn’t meant to be opinionated, and regardless of anything, Ubuntu and Snaps are still great for newcomers to Linux. Hell, i’d say snaps are AMAZING for server use! ABSOLUTELY amazing, and i HIGHLY recommend that if you’re going to make a server to use Ubuntu and snaps, especially if you don’t want to bother with installing and setting up many server software, like NextCloud!

ℹ️ When downloading, there are two versions that you can download.

The LTS version is best for people who just want a system that works, is stable and secure. It will receive updates for a long amount of time and is perfect for beginners to Linux.

The regular version (as of writing, 24.10) is a more up to date version which has the latest packages and software (as of it’s release) and updates every nine months until a new release comes out. Perfect for users who use the latest hardware and want the latest features that benefit things like gaming, or want the latest version of the desktop environment.

Honorable Mentions

There are a lot more Linux distributions that focus on being beginner friendly and easy to use, but i think it’s best to stick with what’s popular since you’re guaranteed to get quick support whenever you need help with something.

However, i don’t want to leave out all those other great general purpose and beginner friendly distros just because they aren’t that well known, so here’s a list of honorable mentions:

Distros to avoid as a beginner

Here’s a list of distros that you should avoid from using as a beginner, especially if you’re someone who wants a computer that works and is up-to-date:

Pop!_OS - system76, the developers of Pop!_OS are working on the new COSMIC desktop environment and are working on finishing it before pushing a proper new release of Pop!_OS, thus the current release is stuck on an old Ubuntu 22.04 base which doesn’t have proper support for modern hardware and the latest drivers for graphics cards. Only use it once system76 ships out a 1.0 release of the COSMIC desktop, and with it, a version of Pop!_OS based on the latest version of Ubuntu LTS
Manjaro - History of system breaking updates and in general you shouldn’t be using a rolling release distro as a beginner.
Fedora - Lot’s of post-install tweaks are needed for a proper desktop use, annoying and complicated installer and many delays for features the community has been asking for a long time. DNF4 is very sucky yucky!!!
elementaryOS - While the desktop looks very attractive, macOS like and simple to use, the team behind elementary OS choose to prioritize Flatpaks over system packages, and put a unnecessary price tag in place of the Install button to make you donate to the developer of the app, which donating is always a good thing don’t get me wrong, but at least put a donation popup when clicking Install instead of making the user manually put in ‘0’ as the price!!!
KDE neon - This is not a beginner friendly distro, it’s an enthusiast and developer distro tailored towards the KDE desktop and KDE software. I also wouldn’t recommend it in general for how weird it is.
GNOME OS - Same reason as KDE neon. Meant for testing the latest version of GNOME and it’s software ecosystem.
Deepin - Very heavy on visuals and more tailored to a Chinese speaking audience, unless you are Chinese, than i don’t see a reason why you wouldn’t consider using it.
Anything rolling release

General Purpose (more knowledgeable)

If you are someone who knows about computers, you already know some stuff about Linux or you’re ready to get your hands dirty, and you want to use a more advanced distro, this section is for you. It won’t cover distros like Arch or Gentoo, but instead will cover distros that provide a minimal desktop install so you can modify it to fit your needs.

Arch based distros will be mentioned.

EndeavourOS

Overall Rating:

★★★★☆

If you wanna use Arch Linux, but don’t want to go through the entire process of installing Arch and setting everything up and just want to start with a desktop immediately, endeavourOS is definitely a great choice. It also comes pre-installed with YAY (tool for installing packages from the Arch User Repository) for those who want to use the AUR, aswell as a small collection of tools for maintaining your system.

It has a welcome application from which you can perform basic maintenance aswell as install any extra apps you might need.

During installation, it gives you the choice of installing any desktop environment from the list in the installer. So in case you don’t want to use KDE, you can pick something else.

You can also choose to install the Long Term Support version of the Linux kernel in case you wish to stay on an older but still updated kernel for stability, aswell as printer support.

Overall

There isn’t much to say about endeavourOS (also i know that’s not how you spell it, sue me :3c). It’s just Arch with a pre-configured desktop environment for you to build on top of. I do like it’s color scheme (purpl :3c) and the whole space/galaxy theme they’re going for.

I highly recommend it over vanilla Arch if you don’t want to go through the hassle of setting up the system and want to start with a desktop immediately.

Fedora

Overall Rating:

Update: Oh boy was it uncalled for to criticise Fedora for absolutely no reason whatsoever. I’ve distrohopped to Fedora KDE and i can’t believe that things just straight up work, on Wayland! On a GTX 750 Ti no less! Also i was not at all aware that Fedora already switched to DNF5, and man is it so much faster than DNF4.

Score updated to 4 stars.

Fedora Linux is a continuation of Red Hat Linux and serves as a upstream for CentOS Stream, which itself serves as a upstream for RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux).

Fedora is a great choice for desktop workstation use and uses RPM packages instead of DEB which Ubuntu and Debian based distros use, however, Fedora isn’t perfect, and has a lot of issues that take so many releases to address, like for example, the very confusing and weird installer, which thankfully is being replaced in a future version of Fedora, aswell as not including Flathub out of the box and missing packages that need to be added via RPM Fusion

That being said, it’s still a great choice for a desktop distro and also has a lot of choices for desktops just like Ubuntu. It offers more vanilla desktop configurations than Ubuntu, which is perfect for building a custom desktop tailored specifically to you.

It’s also a great choice if you want to use the latest version of GNOME and KDE since with pretty much every new version of Fedora, you’re getting the latest versions of those desktops, with new features, bug fixes etc.

Fedora uses GNOME Software, which is an okay software manager and uses Flatpaks aswell, however you have to enable third-party repositories in order to enable Flathub, otherwise you’re stuck with the Fedora Flatpak repository, which provides less software than Flathub.

Enabling third-party repositories also allows you to install Google Chrome, Steam and the NVIDIA drivers.

Besides Flathub, Fedora doesn’t come with a lot of software available to install, especially proprietary software. Besides Flathub and Chrome, Steam and NVIDIA drivers previously mentioned, that’s it for RPM package choice.

To actually enable third-party repositories, you need to head over to the RPM Fusion website and download and install the free and nonfree packages that enable the RPM Fusion repo on your system.

Now, here is one of my biggest reasons why i wouldn’t recommend Fedora to newcomers.

This is Fedora’s ‘Anaconda’ installer, used in many different RPM based distros.

It might look simple at first, and all it asks for is really a username and what disk to install onto.

Now when you go select which drive to install it onto,

You see how there’s a checkmark on the drive?

That means it already selected that drive.

You would think you yourself have to select the drive but the installer selects it automatically. So when you go to select the drive, it actually unselects the drive and confuses you completely.

So why do you have to click on the drive selection when it will automatically select the drive anyway? I understand if you have multiple drives and you don’t want to mess something up, or you wanna do manual partitioning for dual-boot for example, but still??? When you have only one drive in your system, logically you want to install it on the only drive in your computer, right?!

There are other gripes i have with Fedora but they are mostly my gripes and shouldn’t really affect your opinion on the distro.

Overall

Fedora is still a great distro, especially when you want to configure your own desktop since it gives you a vanilla desktop out of the box.

I mean if Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux himself uses it, then it should be perfectly fine for anyone else!!!

The KDE version of Fedora uses ‘Discover’ instead of ‘GNOME Software’ but still provide you access to both RPM packages and Flatpaks. Other desktop spins might use a different graphical tool for RPM packages, but for Flatpaks, you probably have to use the command-line to install them.

If you decide to use Fedora, you should follow this guide by It’s FOSS for things to do/tweaks to apply after installing it. Pretty good guide.

openSUSE Tumbleweed

openSUSE Tumbleweed is the rolling release version openSUSE Leap. It comes with YaST (Yet another Setup Tool) which is used to both install the distro, configure many parts of the system, install packages and update the system. It’s a excellent program and very advanced. It might be too much for a regular user, but if you’re someone who prefers GUI’s over doing everything from the terminal/CLI, it’s awesome.

Unlike Fedora, openSUSE is less restricting when it comes to proprietary software, so things like Steam and Discord are available to install out of the box. NVIDIA drivers still need to be installed from a different repository, however the open module version are available ootb, so no need to enable any extra repos for those.

There is no “default” desktop for openSUSE, instead you pretty much install whatever desktop you want from the installer, but you can download a live CD which comes with either KDE, GNOME or XFCE desktops if you want to test out openSUSE without installing.

On the last step of the installer, you can choose which desktop to install if you don’t want to use any of the three provided choices by clicking on ‘Software’

From here, you can choose any of the “patterns”,

or click ‘Details’ and then search for any packages you want to have pre-installed on your system after installation.

openSUSE (at least KDE and GNOME versions) come pre-installed with Flatpaks out of the box, configured with Flathub, so getting anything that isn’t available in regular repos is easy.

openSUSE also utilizes something called “Open Build Service” which allows you to install packages that aren’t available in regular repositories. I’m not entirely sure how to use it so i can’t say much about it, but it does exist and is an option for those who are interested.

Overall

There isn’t much more i can say about openSUSE, it’s a great and a solid choice for people who want a minimal graphical configuration to then build on top of.

I myself used openSUSE for some time and i liked it a lot and still has a special place in my heart, but i really prefer the minimalism of Void. I like both equally though! They’re both green!

Honorable Mentions

Here’s a list of distros that didn’t get a proper section written because i just don’t know much about them:

Build Your Own

I’m not gonna write much about these (Arch, Gentoo, Void, nixOS). These distros are for people who really want to fine-tune their system to fit their needs and want to install a desktop from scratch (no not compiling everything from scratch, that’s LFS, insanity), and i highly suggest doing lot’s of your own research and testing in VMs before using them.

Things can break, things might break, systems might break even, but as long as you’re following everything word by word in their respective wikis, everything should be fine (hopefully (probably (maybe (:3c)))).

nixOS is amazing! You write into a configuration file, save it, reload your system, restart and it’s applied! Just like that!

And if you’re in a business environment with a ton of unconfigured computers, you install nixOS on every single one of them, put the configuration file in them, and they are all exactly the same! Just like that! Desktop, software, settings, everything is as it should be!

Take your desktop config and put it on your laptop! On your VM! On your toaster! Smart fridge! Literally anything that can run nixOS, you can have all of them have the exact same configuration with the same software pre-installed. I think it’s great, but i can’t use it myself on my main system. I like just straight up installing packages.

Closing Thoughts

With the ever approaching deadline of Windows 10’s support, i think now is the best time to consider switching to an operating system that won’t stop supporting your computer because it doesn’t have some arbitrary requirement that, in the end won’t matter and won’t make a difference to the safety and security of your computer.

Windows 11 is the devil that needs to be discarded and sent to the deepest pit of hell, never to be seen again. I can’t believe that Microsoft is actually doing this. I really thought that Windows 10 is going to be the last version of Windows and is going to just keep improving upon it every year without adding any kind of bullshit on top of it, still allowing computers as many as 15 years old to keep running as long as they meet the bare minimum system requirements.

I don’t care what anyone says, Linux should be the number one operating system in the world, because it actually puts the user first, instead of treating the user as nothing more than a data collection tool to gather data and sell it to advertisers or train some bullshit AI LLM and de-humanize you as much as they possibly can.

Install Alpine Linux with a desktop environment

Talking about Alpine

Alpine is a very interesting distro. And also different from the rest. No systemd, instead it uses OpenRC, musl C library instead of glibc and busybox instead of GNU. It can be used for various different things, like as a webserver, in embedded systems and IoT devices, containers and even as a minimal and lightweight desktop OS. If you don’t do much on your computer, or you want to make an old and slow computer somewhat usable, it’s not a bad choice since they provide 32-bit x86 ISOs.

Installing Alpine is pretty simple, and a desktop is even easier, but their wiki… isn’t the greatest in terms of layouts, and there’s a lot of information that a regular desktop user wouldn’t really care about since again, Alpine linux is really meant to be used in servers, embedded devices etc.

This post will guide you to installing and configure a basic desktop environment in Alpine Linux.

Some things to note before starting

Alpine uses it’s own package manager called apk. The way you install packaged is a bit unusual, you’re not installing them, but instead “adding” them.

Some basic commands:

doas apk add <package-name> to install package(s),

doas apk del <package-name> to remove package(s),

doas apk update && doas apk upgrade to update the system and

apk search <package-name> to search for package(s).

Oh yeah, since Alpine is aiming to be simple and minimal, no sudo here! It uses doas which is a minimal alternative to sudo. Of course you can create an alias if you can’t get used to typing doas instead of sudo, but you can also install the doas-sudo-shim package to run sudo-like commands using doas.

Alpine uses OpenRC instead of systemd, which as you could’ve guessed is a minimal init system compared to systemd. An excellent choice for a distro like Alpine. OpenRC is also used in Gentoo aswell.

Here’s a list of basic commands that you should know:

doas rc-service <service> start to start a service,

doas rc-service <service> stop to stop a service,

doas rc-update add <service> default to start the service at startup, and

doas rc-update del <service> default to prevent the service from running at startup.

Installing Alpine

⚠️ If you’re using an NVIDIA GPU, you’re basically stuck with using open source drivers which are terrible. If you’re using something like a GT 1030, you’d be fine with desktop graphics and video playback but anything more and you’re gonna suffer. Like suffer a lot.

Head over to the Alpine linux website and download the ‘standard’ ISO. Note the ISO size

Either burn it to a USB flash drive and boot it on real hardware or boot it from a VM.

It should boot in under 10 seconds.

From here, we need to login. Just login as root. There is no password for the root user.

Afterwards, run the setup-alpine script and follow the instructions the installer prompts you. On most prompts you just have to press Enter since the defaults are good enough.

ℹ️ I can’t provide instructions on getting connected to a Wi-Fi network. Just type in the name of the wireless interface when you’re asked for a network interface and connect to a Wi-Fi network.

Oh and make sure when putting in your timezone to put the / as the last character if it shows as such in the list, otherwise you might break something.

When you’re asked about the mirrors, first type in c to enable the community repository, then type f to use the fastest mirror available, or just use the default option given.

After selecting mirrors, enter a username for a user when prompted.

You will also be asked if you want to install a SSH server on the system. I chose not to since i never use SSH on real hardware and i don’t need one in a temporary VM.

Afterwards you will be asked what disk to install Alpine onto. Simply type in the name of it in the list, then type in sys for how you want it to be used.

Finally, answer y to erase the drive and install Alpine.

The installation process should take around 10 seconds, and once it’s done, just reboot the system.

Getting a desktop setup

Once rebooted, login as the root user so you don’t have to use ‘doas’, and type in setup-desktop. You can choose whatever desktop you like. I’m gonna pick GNOME because :3c

After installing a desktop, i highly advise to follow additional steps on the wiki for your desktop in case you want to add features that are missing from the install, like a video driver for your specific GPU (apk search xf86-video) and also input drivers (apk search xf86-input)

Make sure that networkmanager, dbus, elogind and a display manager are enabled in OpenRC and that dhcpcd is disabled on startup since we won’t need it anymore.

You should also check if any packages are missing (like pipewire, pipewire-pulse and wireplumber, a file manager, terminal and web browser) and should install them now.

ℹ️ It is possible that some desktop choices don’t use NetworkManager and instead use dhcpcd for connecting to the internet. In that case, install NetworkManager and a applet if needed and enable it on startup and disable dchpcd.
If you’re connecting via Wi-Fi, follow these instructions to make sure NetworkManager can connect to Wi-Fi.

You should also copy over default pipewire and wireplumber configs:

Finally restart to see if you’ve done everything correctly.

Anyways, from here you can configure the desktop to your liking and also install Flatpaks in order to use proprietary software like Steam and Discord. They have detailed instructions on getting Flatpaks setup and configured on the wiki.

Also a firewall, NEVER forget to install a firewall.

Yeah, unfortunately no GUFW, so you basically have to set up UFW from the CLI which isn’t a painful process:

Wrapping up

That’s basically it. There’s not much that you can do on Alpine besides use it as a minimal desktop distro. There aren’t a lot of packages at your disposal so you pretty much have to rely on Flatpaks, and if you want to use, nix aswell.

If i used Alpine more i’d definitely have more to say about it but since i have an NVIDIA GPU, i really can’t do much.

Definitely recommend it on a low-end computer especially since it has 32-bit ISOs and is very fast and minimal.

Any other info you need to know about the distro can be found on their wiki which in my opinion, it’s a great site for knowing how to do stuff on Alpine, but the installation guide is so bloated with information that sysadmins/sysops only care about. That’s why i wrote this guide in the first place.

I have been recently thinking about what i’m doing with this website.

Is it a bit unoriginal to be making a website using a Hugo theme? I know a lot of website today are built using static site generators and all of that, but isn’t the point of making a personal website… personal? Like make it your own instead of taking a template and making it work? I dunno…

I chose to use Hugo not because i didn’t know how to make a proper website. I do! If i restarted the entire website right now and started from scratch, no site generators, no nothing, just pure HTML and CSS, i could definitely make it, but i’ve never used Hugo before and it seemed interesting to me. Maybe it would be more original to make my own Hugo theme then? I could do that but that would take a very very long time, and i’ll probably be spending a lot less time adding stuff to my website, which is what i want to do, and not to waste a lot of the time making a Hugo theme.

So, my question is…

Was it a good idea to restart my website just for the sake of experimentation?

I dunno. Honestly i couldn’t answer that queston. I really like this layout. Sort of like a social media page just… without the social media part.

Experimenting with what works and what doesn’t, modifying the theme to my liking and all of that is just super fun. I’m just afraid that at one point i’ll look at what i’ve created and tell myself “this is shit.”, “why did you waste your time doing this?”, “you should’ve been doing something productive instead.” That’s what i’m afraid of, that one day i won’t like what i made and forget about it, leaving it just to exist as a archive of something i’ve made.

I’m probably overthinking this. Most definitely.

It’s a real blast having your own website. You can make and talk about whatever you want! As long as it’s morall correct of course. And you also have to maintain it, obviously.

Working on the website has definitely helped with preventing any bad thoughts going through my mind. I don’t even care if i don’t get many visits, it’s still nice to write about stuff. I had a blast writing guides and i’ll definitely be writing more of them later down the line. Maybe i’ll even write game reviews! Who knows! Anything goes!

A lot of random things and thoughts will go to the ☕ small talk page, a micro-blogging page with mostly just random thoughts that i want to write about. Setting that up was pretty odd to say the least and getting it published alongside my main site is kinda jank since i’d have to copy the generated site from it’s folder into the main generated site folder. And just so i don’t have to do that over and over again, i wrote two scripts that build the site(s) build.sh but also one that runs the local webserver for testing it out server.sh.

There’s gonna be more shitposting over there and maybe probably hot opinions on things, but i mostly look at things subjectively, unless i have a really strong opinion on something. Like for example, Unreal Engine is the biggest piece of unoptimized dogshit i’ve ever layed my eyes on and should stop being used for making games. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE. Games look bad, and run like shit.
…then again Valorant runs Unreal and my mind literally blew up when i found that out. It looks NOTHING like a UE4 game.

Anyways, i’m doing fine. Just had a little bit of a brain fart while messing around with the site. Hopefully i won’t be writing anything like this again sometime soon.

And remember, stay positive. Even if things aren’t the greatest, there’s always positivity somewhere.

Install Void Linux with a desktop environment + Flatpaks

Yapping about Void Linux first

Sometime ago, i watched videos about Void Linux from both DistroTube and Mental Outlaw, and was very fascinated by it. I’ve wanted to use it on my main desktop for a long time, but every time i tried to main a Linux distro, i always had some issue that made me boot back into my Windows install or had to play a Anti-Cheat enabled game. Also my GTX 750 Ti seems to really work best on Windows for whatever reason. I should probably get a RX 580 and retire my 750 Ti for good not just so i can have a better experience with using Linux but also so my games run better and also be able to play DX12 only games.

Now that i’ve pretty much moved away from Windows, i can finally use Linux in peace and not ever think about switching back to that piece of shit!

Anyways, Void Linux yeah.

It’s an independant Linux distro, not based on Debian or Arch, just based. It gives you the option to use either glibc or musl C libraries, uses ‘runit’ instead of ‘systemd’ which, let’s be real, no normal Linux user cares what init system you use. Systemd works, OpenRC works, runit works, they all work and that’s the only thing that should matter, not how bloated they are.

It uses it’s own ‘XBPS’ package manager, which is super super fast, but also very weirdly named. It’s definitely gonna take some time to get used to typing XBPS when you first use it, not to mention that the commands used aren’t:

sudo xbps install
sudo xbps remove
sudo xbps update

etc, but are all a single word:

sudo xbps-install <pkgname> for installing,
sudo xbps-remove -o <pkgname> for removing packages and their dependencies
sudo xbps-install -Su for synchronizing repos (-S) and updating the system (-u).

Of course you can alias all of those command in your .bashrc or whatever shell you prefer to speed things up if you want:

⚠️ Update: xi is a tool included with the xtools package. If you’re planning to install xtools, keep in mind that you won’t be able to use it because of the alias!

I can go on and on and on about Void, i genuinely enjoy using the distro, but i should probably stop writing about it and move to actually installing it and trying it out.

Booting up Void Linux

Void unfortunately only ships with a plain XFCE ISO for desktop choices, but that’s okay because we can use it to at least first try and see if everything works out of the box, then we can install it and then chroot into the install to prepare our system for first time boot, like installing necessary services like dbus, elogind, NetworkManager, a display manager, bluetooth etc, window manager or desktop environment, all the applications you need and apply any system tweaks, like configuring LightDM with a proper theme and wallpaper before we even boot into the install!

Head over to the download page and download the XFCE image, or the base image if you’re okay with just a tty prompt.

Either create a virtual machine or use Etcher or dd and put the ISO onto a USB flash drive and boot it up.

The installer

As you might have noticed, there is no ‘Install Void Linux’ desktop icon to install the distro. The installer is entirely in ncurses, so we have to bring up a terminal to launch the installer.

Simply type in sudo void-installer and it should launch.

From here, simply go through each step of the installer until you reach ‘Source’.

You will be given a choice of installing ‘Local’ or ‘Network’.

The ‘Local’ option will install all packages that are in the live system, including the desktop environment. So if you want to use the XFCE desktop or don’t really care and just want to get Void up and running, choose ‘Local’.

⚠️ Make sure to update the system after installing if you pick ‘Local’ install!

If you’re planning to install a different desktop or window manager, choose ‘Network’. This will install a fresh and up to date system with only a tty prompt.
For this tutorial, i’m going to pick Network and install KDE.

Continue going through the install until you need to partition the drive.

Partitioning

Select ‘cfdisk’.

Now, depending on how old your computer is, you either choose ‘gpt’ for UEFI or ‘dos’ for legacy BIOS.
If you’re running Void in a virtual machine, pick ‘dos’ since that’s usually the default option in VMs.

If you’re running Void on real hardware, to check which BIOS type your computer uses, open another terminal window and type ls /sys/firmware.

If there’s a folder called ’efi’, then you’re using a UEFI BIOS and you can pick ‘gpt’. If not, select ‘dos’.

BIOS partitioning

If you’re in a VM/using legacy BIOS, you only need to create one partition that takes up the entire drive and is type ‘Linux’

If you’re running on real hardware, create a partition for Void and leave some space for a swap partition, usually either as much RAM you have, or twice that amount.
A swap partition is usually unnecessary when running inside VMs.

UEFI partitioning

If you’re using a UEFI BIOS, you need to create a extra 512M-1GB partition with a type ‘EFI System’. This is necessary for booting the system, otherwise it won’t boot.
The rest you can freely allocate for Void and swap.

File systems

For file systems, things are pretty straight forward:

If on UEFI, the ‘EFI System’ partition needs to be formatted with vfat (FAT32), and it’s mount point set to /boot/efi,
the Linux partition can be formatted with either btrfs or ext4, and it’s mount point set to /
and the swap partition need to be formatted with… swap.

I’m going to choose BTRFS since, again it doesn’t really matter what you use as long as it’s one of the two formats i mentioned above.

Hit ‘Done’.

Installing Void

From here, select Install, and confirm that you want to erase the partitions we created.

Now for a bit of fun, prepare a stopwatch and run it through the install to count how long the install takes.

Oh and also, if you chose the ‘Network’ install, you’re gonna have to press OK at one point to continue with the install.

I’d say that took like 2 minutes, more or less.

If you chose the ‘Local’ install, feel free to reboot from here and afterwards, install and configure everything you need, but since i chose the ‘Network’ install, i’m gonna pick No and chroot into the system to install KDE and enable services.

Just pick Exit from the step list and you’re back to a bash prompt.

(Network) Installing a desktop/window manager

This is where the fun begins!

When you exit out of the installer, it automatically un-mounts the partitions, but we can simply just re-mount the Linux partition and chroot into it:

From here we can start installing the packages we need for a desktop.

These are the essential packages we need for getting any GUI up and running:

vim nano dbus elogind polkit xorg xorg-fonts xorg-video-drivers xorg-input-drivers dejavu-fonts-ttf terminus-font NetworkManager pipewire alsa-pipewire wireplumber xdg-user-dirs unzip gzip xz 7zip

Choice of desktop

If you head over to the packages page on their website, you can search for any package available in their repository.

Here you can check if your window manager or specific program is available for install.

For real though i’m actually a bit shocked that hyprland isn’t in the repos.
But obviously things like GNOME, KDE, Cinnamon, XFCE, LXQt, MATE, i3/sway, dwm, openbox etc. are there and can be installed.

Here is a list of which desktop environments are installable and how to install them:

GNOME:

Getting everything up and running

Did you install everything you need? Great!
Now it’s time to get everything up and running.

We need to enable quite a few services and have Pipewire start on login.

Since Void uses runit, the way you enable services is different than on a distro running systemd, even openrc! Because to enable services in runit, you create a symbolic link from any service in /etc/sv into /etc/runit/runsvdir/default/.

So to enable for example dbus:

And then we make sure it’s running by executing:

So here is a extensive list of all services we need to enable in order to get a desktop running:

Now to configure Pipewire for audio:

ℹ️ If you’re using a window manager or you’re getting an error that says dbus isn’t running,
you need to edit the xsession .desktop file of the WM or DE that you’re using
located in /usr/share/xsessions/ and add dbus-launch to the beginning of
the Exec= line in the file in order for dbus to work properly.

Now type exit a bunch of times until you close the terminal and reboot the system.

If all went well, you should see a regular GRUB boot menu and after selecting Void Linux installed on your drive…

And running pretty smoothly even in a VM with the QXL video card.

If the Internet is working properly, you should probably disable dhcpcd since it’s not used anymore:

NVIDIA

One more thing before moving on to :3c-ing our perfectly clean and vanilla desktop.
If you’re using an NVIDIA GPU, you need to enable the nonfree repository in order to install the driver.

This also allows us to install Steam but not Discord (probably because Void devs and contributors don’t want to ship bulky electron apps,,,,,)

To install the driver, simply install the void-repo-nonfree package, synchronize the repos with sudo xbps-install -Su and then install the appropriate version of the driver:

nvidia for GTX 750 Ti (<3), 800 series and above
nvidia470 for 600 and 700 series
nvidia390 for 400 and 500 series

And then reboot your system.

If all goes well, you should be booted back into your system with NVIDIA drivers instead of Nouveau.

Now it’s time to customize the desktop!

personally if i was using kde instead of xfce i’d be fine with this
probably not with the light theme but even then, the kde desktop by itself with no theme change already looks really good and really nice

In all seriousness though, here are some extra things you can do after installing Void.

Firewall

Uncomplicated Firewall.

Very uncomplicated, and very much a firewall. Definitely what you should be running on a computer for security.

Just install the ufw package (bonus install gufw for a GTK GUI, or plasma-firewall if you’re on KDE), enable the ufw service, then run sudo ufw enable to start it!

Steam

I’ve mentioned Steam before so i will mention it again for those who installed ‘Local’

You first enable multilib, nonfree and multilib-nonfree repositories by installing the void-repo-nonfree void-repo-multilib void-repo-multilib-nonfree packages, then sync the repos with sudo xbps-install -S, and then you can just install the steam package. I’m not entirely sure if the multilib repos are needed but just in case.

Flatpaks

Something not available in the official repos? Missing Discord? (and i know you are >:3)

Flatpaks! Probably the best thing to come out of the GNOME Foundation in my humble opinion.

They were even nice enough to put Void Linux on their setup page which has instructions on how to install and setup Flatpak with the Flathub repo.

But just so you don’t have to open another page, here are the commands you need

Afterwards, re-login and you can start installing Flatpaks!

If you’re on GNOME, you can install gnome-software for a GUI to install Flatpaks, or if you’re on KDE, they recently (as of the writing of this post) added Discover (discover kf6-purpose), which you can use for installing Flatpaks.

You can also if you’re on KDE, install flatpak-kcm to manage permissions of each Flatpak right from the settings app! Super convenient!!!

You can also install Warehouse to manage and install Flatpaks which you can use on any desktop, even though it’s a libadwaita app.

OctoXBPS

If you don’t want to bother with opening up a terminal every time you wanna install, remove or update your system, you can install octoxbps and then add ‘OctoXBPS Notifier’ to startup applications and have a system tray that checks for system updates periodically and changes to color red when updates are available.

That is if you’re on a non-KDE based desktop, because in KDE, it appears just like every other update notification icon.

Wrapping up

There are a lot more things that can be done and installed on Void. What i mentioned in this post is only just a handful of things i know. There’s also xbps-src, which is basically the distros equivalent of the AUR but more official (i think?). I didn’t cover it since i didn’t really use it that much. And even though that is the official way to get Discord up and running on the distro, i prefer to run Discord from a web browser and use the pipewire-screenshare extension to get audio screenshare working.

Void also isn’t perfect. There were a lot of issues with the distro that i’ve encountered before. For example: the Cinnamon desktop has been orphaned for some time and was a lot of versions behind the official release, and because of that you weren’t able to see wallpapers in the wallpaper settings because of a missing dependency. Even now while making this post and getting Discover running, i wasn’t able to click on any app because kf6-purpose was missing, so i had to install it manually in order for Discover to work.

But once you get everything up and running, it works and it’s great. I’d say better than Arch Linux even, and Arch is already super fast!

Once i get an AMD card, no longer do i have to suffer from issues with the NVIDIA drivers and finally use Wayland with no problems.

(SDK UPDATE) Getting started with creating VRChat content on Linux

I enjoy creating content for VRChat! While I don’t make a lot of content for the platform, I do have a couple of original avatars, some 2D avatars, and two worlds I’m very proud of creating.

Ever since I fully switched to Linux, I’ve wondered if it’s still somewhat possible to make VRChat content. Turns out, yes, it is!

As of SDK version 3.7.6, building both Avatars and Worlds is now possible without the need of patching the SDK like before, but testing worlds doesn’t work since it tries to run the game without Wine/Proton, so you’re gonna have to publish the world with private visibilty in order to test new builds. Hopefully that can be done in the next version of the SDK.

In any case, this post will guide you through setting everything up so you can start creating content for VRChat on Linux!

Requirements

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or higher, Fedora 41 (40 not tested).
Roughly 10-20 GB of free space.
A VRChat account with a “New User” trust rank so you can upload stuff.

ℹ️ For those who use a different distro

Arch users can install the unityhub package from the AUR, or from the chaotic-aur repository.

If you aren’t using Ubuntu 24.04 or higher, Fedora 41 or Arch, install podman and distrobox then create an Ubuntu 24.04 container using the ‘quay.io’ toolbx image of Ubuntu:

You can use any name you want for the container by changing ‘VRC’ in --name VRC to whatever you prefer.

Any further instructions related to the container will be clearly labeled as such.

⚠️ Make sure that you’re using the correct image, as the ‘docker.io’ version is missing necessary desktop integration needed for the tutorial!

ALCOM

ALCOM is a free and open-source alternative to the VRChat Creator Companion. It’s pretty awesome and works just as well, if not better, than the Creator Companion!

It’s available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and you’ll use it to manage your VRChat projects. You could run the original VCC in Wine or similar, but ALCOM integrates directly with your system, so there’s no need to use the Windows-only VCC with compatibility layers.

It only comes as a .AppImage, so you need to ensure you have FUSE2 installed:

In case it’s missing, double check to make sure desktop-file-utils is installed in order for ALCOM to be able to open ‘vcc’ links for one click adding repositories:

Now download ALCOM from here and put it somewhere sensible, like on your desktop or directly in your home folder, and make sure that you can run it:

Don’t run it yet! We need to setup Unity before we can proceed with setting up ALCOM.

Unity Hub

We obviously need Unity to make stuff for VRChat! To get it, we need to install Unity Hub to manage Unity installs. You’ll definitely need it for when VRChat updates the version of Unity they use.

First, add their public key to your system so you can use their repository:

Next, add the repository:

And then install Unity Hub:

Fedora version:

If you encounter any issues regarding modules, install cpio.

Unity Hub should now appear in your applications menu under the “Development” category. Open it, log in with your Unity account, and accept the Personal license.

ℹ️ Addendum for Distrobox

(1) You will encounter an error regarding ‘apparmor’ during installation. This can be safely ignored as it still installs Unity Hub without issues.

(2) Before proceeding, make sure to run this command from within the container:
distrobox-export --app unityhub
or if you’re using BoxBuddy, click on ‘View Applications’, find Unity Hub in the list, and click ‘Add To Menu’ to add it to you applications menu so that your browser can see Unity Hub and can properly open it when clicking on ‘Install’ from the download archive

From there, head over to the download archive and then find the latest version of Unity that VRChat uses and install it. You can check by visiting this page, which lists the current Unity version that VRChat uses.

When you click install, Unity Hub should open and ask you to install the version of Unity you’re going to install and give you choices of installing additional modules.
Select ‘Android Build Support’ (for porting content to Quest and Android) and ‘Windows Build Support (Mono)’ from the list, then click Continue.

It should start downloading Unity and all the selected modules.

Once it’s done, close Unity Hub since we don’t need it until a Unity upgrade is needed.

Setting up ALCOM

ℹ️ Addendum for Distrobox

You must run ALCOM from within the container for it to properly detect Unity Hub. I suggest creating a bash script that runs ALCOM from the container instead of entering it manually.

Here’s a simple script that does just that:

Yes, this somehow still works even if the application is containerized.
Although i assume it only works while the app is running.

And done!

You should now be able to import your projects and work on them the same way as you would on Windows. I do highly recommend creating a backup before importing in case something goes horribly wrong.

Do keep in mind that Unity doesn’t support Wayland yet, so i recommend switching to a X11 session to minimize bugs that you might encounter while using it.

Closing thoughts

I’ve been keeping a close eye on this VRChat Feedback post for a good amoun of time, waiting for any updates from the developers. Back in February, they marked the post as “In Progress”, and 10 days later as “Available in future release”. That release came on March 5th and i tested both Avatar and World building and yes, both worked perfectly fine. Unfortunately, building and testing doesn’t work since there is no option to select a Wine/Proton prefix for testing unlike in the patch for the SDK that was previously needed, so i hope that will be added in the future.

Anyways i hope this helped! This definitely took some time to write and i honestly don’t even know how i remember all of this off the top of my head lol.

Hi! I’m Compact! I’m from Serbia 🇷🇸, 20 years old, still thinking about my gender, big af nerd, sucker for tactical shooters, silly RPG maker games and old-school games.
And I’m here because I’ve decided that being terminally online on Discord 24/7 isn’t the healthiest thing on the mind, heh heh heh…

I’m really not proud of myself or what I’ve done recently because I’ve been unintentionally pushing people away, not just from me, but also from groups of friends they’ve known for some time now because I’m very annoying and pushy. A lot of times, I’ve told myself that I don’t deserve any of the good things I’ve received and that I deserve to be alone for the rest of my life.

So yeah, I’ve basically logged out of and uninstalled Discord until I feel better, although I kind of doubt I’ll log back in, simply because I really enjoy doing things by myself. If you feel the same way, I highly recommend logging out and focusing more on yourself. Try to find a hobby. If you want to keep yourself occupied, consider making a website on Neocities and learning how to create one. You can either write it manually in HTML and CSS (and optionally add JavaScript) or use a static site generator like Hugo. I find that to be a much nicer and more relaxing thing to do than sitting alone and thinking about how nobody likes you on Discord.

And I find that weird since I’m not the biggest fan of people anyway. I’d much rather be by myself and play games, watch something, or do something that really piques my interest. That could be anything, from Linux to something completely random, rather than bothering people to spend time with me.

I’ve also made the decision to switch off of Windows entirely, putting behind the (not so) fun time (trying to) play ranked in Rainbow Six Siege and being able to play on live Escape from Tarkov servers. But hey, i see this as a positive since i don’t have to think about the toxicity and the sweatiness of players in both of those games!
In all seriousness though, if you ARE playing any of the mainstream competitive games (CS, Valorant, LoL, Siege etc.) and just mainstream slop in general (CoD, Fortnite etc.), i highly suggest thinking about quitting those games and play something more chill, more indie or actual good AAA games like any FromSoftware game, Baldur’s Gate 3… uhh i don’t really follow AAA games that much lol, but anyways, what I’m trying to say is that you should be playing more indie and much more cooler games than the 60-80$ slop that companies put out nowadays. I have a lot of them listen in my recommendations page.

In the process of switching, I’ve also decided to try out using RSS properly for the first time.

I like it.
The first thing i do when i get on my computer now is not open a web browser and scroll through the very toxic and radioactive elephant foot called Twitter and have my news be surrounded by modern day politics that consist of really just Elon Musk and Trump and their dick su- errr i mean supporters, drama left and right, the uncomfortable amount of suggestive art that i keep seeing recently, none of that bullshit.
I instead get greeted by my curated list of news outlets that give me news about things I care about. Whether that would be Linux related things, gaming, tech, or the local news even.
A real shame that Twitter has just straight up turned into a literal elephant foot from how toxic it has become, and if i try to use BlueSky, i would have to start all over again with following people and having a timeline full of stuff i care about, and I’m too lazy to do all that again. :P

I’ve also been thinking a lot about who i am, gender wise but unsure on when the time is right to fully make a proper transition, so for now i don’t really care how I’m called and what pronouns are used on me.

I’ve been planning to write detailed tutorials on things that I’ve learned and want to share with everyone else, so in case this happens:

There’s going to be a lot of tutorial writing since i know… WAAAAAAAYYYYYYY too many things and somehow can contain all of it in my dumb brain. I’m probably going to be writing everything in bulk and publishing it all at the same time.

And also obviously write about random things, even though i know not a lot of people are gonna read my stuff, but who cares!
I’m doing this for the fun of it and I’m having a lot of fun just writing this post right now! even though it’s almost midnight :P

As for what am i going to be writing besides tutorials… well, whatever really. Anything that pops up in my mind. Anything that will get me motivated to write a proper blogpost for once instead of just leaving a template page like my old website lol.

On a more serious note, Void Linux is a really great Linux distro. Perfect for people who are looking for a truly minimal distro. No systemd, choice of glibc and musl for C libraries, not a lot of packages but still enough for a great window manager experience, even a great desktop experience.

One thing i also like about Void and is really the big reason why i wanna use it is that it’s a stable rolling-release distro, meaning updates to packages are held back until they’ve been properly tested and ensured that they work properly. One thing i don’t like is that they stopped providing ISOs for desktops other than XFCE, which is a real bummer, but i won’t complain since the team behind Void is probably small and having to build fewer ISOs gives them more time to work on other things and probably spends less resources. I even made a build script myself to create a live ISO of a pre-configured desktop that’s perfect for… any use really, but i still need to work on it before it’s 100% complete.

Oddly though, i run Alpine on my laptop because, prior to making my custom Void ISO, i was messing around with Alpine and making a script that configures a similar desktop configuration that the custom Void ISO uses. Unfortunately, i ran into weird issues with it, so i basically put it on the backburner. I would love to get a hold of an AMD GPU one day so i can try out Alpine on my main desktop since i mainly use my laptop as a glorified media center for my TV since the battery is almost totally cooked and it was 4GB of RAM, which is absolutely not enough for the modern web but still good enough for some lightweight tasks and playing YouTube and cough cough totally legit streamed content. Since Alpine supports Flatpaks, you can basically run anything you need, even Steam and anything that Proton can run.

And yes, i know that Alpine is mostly a business/enterprise oriented distro, but it can definitely be used as a desktop distro no problem. I recommend giving it a go in a VM and mess around!

What’s with the anime character? Dweeb…

Truth be told, i don’t watch anime that much. Most of it is really just overhyped and generic; some are even made to target a… certain type of audience, which i don’t wanna talk much about.
I did watch some new ones that came out, like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (which isn’t really that new but shush). I mostly just watched old ones or the ones i watched in my childhood (R.I.P. ultra tv 🙏).

Anyways, the character in the profile picture and banner of the page is an “OC” called Naomi i made back in… 2021 i think(?) when i found out about VRoid and it being a character creation tool. Mostly meant for creating v-tuber models, but I’m not that big into v-tubing and v-tubers in general. I don’t like most of them because they sound super annoying and really target a more… louder crowd????? i dunno how to phrase it, but most of the v-tubers i see are very hyperactive and super obnoxious to me. So i just mainly use it to create just avatars/characters, and that’s it.

Back to the character.
It just kinda stuck with me later when i started getting more on VRChat and wanting to make my own avatar and add my own things to it, like custom emotes and stuff. People have also commented on how well made she looks, which does flatter me, but at the end of the day, it didn’t really take that much effort to make since VRoid is basically just putting together a bunch of premade assets that the developers give you and while you can make your own stuff, you’re still limited with using the tools provided in the program. And also the resulting models are kinda a little bit unoptimized, which is whatever really. VRoid is really more than enough for creating a character. I’ve seen what other people have made with it and… wtf how.

VRCHAT??? Lord have mercy on your soul.

o.o Honestly, i stopped going on VRChat to hang out with people after i was basically ghosted by a couple people i met there and it hurt me a lot, especially since they didn’t even say anything or tell me what i did wrong. Oh well, doesn’t matter now since that was basically half a year ago and i am in the process of being a better person. Probably not the best time to do it in your 20s but better than not changing at all, or changing for the worse…

And besides, i only just make and upload avatars and worlds for VRChat nowadays ever since i started somewhat tolerating that godforsakened Unity engine… god i hate unity so much…
Oh and speaking of, i will definitely be making a tutorial for creating VRChat content on Linux!
It’s definitely possible even though Unity officially supports only Debian/Ubuntu and Fedora/RHEL. That’s gonna be fun writing and testing it out.

I will say though, i highly recommend that you stay as far as humanly possible from VRCHat. You WILL meet very weird people, unsupervised children who WILL make you spew out many racial, homophobic, and ethnic slurs at them from how annoying they are (seriously what fucking parent thinks it’s a good idea to give their kid a vr headset??????) and edgy teenagers who are basically an evolution of the unsupervised kids and WILL make you blow your brains out from how cringy they are.
Please just use VRChat to hang out with people you already know, or make content for other people to use or play in.
It uses Unity at the end of the day, so if you know how to use it, program in C#, do 3D modeling etc. go nuts!

Finishing up…

At the end of the day, I’m just here because i want something to keep me occupied while I’m staying away from anything social. I don’t post anything on Twitter, i just go through my feed and that’s it.

It has been over a week now that i haven’t been on Discord and i honestly feel hell-of-a-lot better already, but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna return just like that. I seriously wanna focus on myself and getting my stuff together. It’s going to be months of doing things by myself and doing things that make me happy.

Honestly, many many many many times I’ve asked myself why even bother being on Discord when i could’ve been doing something more productive with my life. It might be just the trauma i got from when i was younger that pushes me more to being glued to my computer a lot but recently I’ve been wanting to go out more. But i live in the city… not a great city either… i don’t like Belgrade. Loud, bad air and the new architecture that makes you think “why is the government spending money on constructing a literal penis-shaped tower rather than trying to fix inflation and the economy?”. I would much rather go to a smaller city, or town, or even village and just live in peace and quiet. Although i have a feeling that sounds a bit too ambitious, but still! City is very sucky sucky.

But that’s about it, i don’t know what else to write about.
I should probably get some sleep because it’s midnight as of when I’m writing this post lol.

Fix Pipewire audio crackling/popping while running Wine or CPU intensive programs.

The Issue

For some odd reason, no matter what distro I use, every time I’m doing something mildly CPU intensive or any Wine program, if I have any audio playing in the background, it’s going to start crackling and make popping sounds constantly.

It is a problem I dealt with for so long, and any fix or solution I found and tried didn’t work at all. It is basically my main reason why I always switch back to using Windows because the issue wasn’t there. That is until recently when I came across this Reddit comment on a post where someone has the same issue as me, and when I tried what the commenter said to do, it worked!

I don’t know why these settings aren’t the default on Pipewire or on many other mainstream desktop Linux distros. There probably is a legitimate reason why they aren’t the default, but I honestly don’t want to know because of how dumb the development of modern Linux desktop components (Wayland, Pipewire, GNOME, KDE etc.) is, and I really don’t wanna write a separate blogpost where I rant about it because I’ll definitely get something wrong, but the tl;dr, desktop Linux is dumb and slow in my opinion.

Solution 1

ℹ️ This portion was rewritten on Feb 22nd because upon testing this on both Ubuntu and Fedora, it breaks audio completely. I don’t know why.

🔊 Applying this will introduce some minor latency to your audio (4-5ms).

Copy these two configuration files from /usr/share/pipewire/¹ into ~/.config/pipewire (create directory if it doesn’t exist):

pipewire-pulse.conf

in pipewire.conf, find the context.properties section and edit these lines to the following values:

default.clock.quantum       = 1024
default.clock.min-quantum   = 1024

remove the # (commments) of course

then in pipewire-pulse.conf, find stream.properties and edit this line to the following value:

`1`	`resample.quality = 10`

now find pulse.properties and edit these lines to the following values:

  pulse.min.req          = 1024/48000
  pulse.default.req      = 1024/48000
  pulse.min.frag         = 256/48000
  pulse.min.quantum      = 256/48000

Afterwards, restart Pipewire or re-login to apply the changes and try to replicate the problem.

If you don’t notice any difference, feel free to to adjust pulse.min.frag and pulse.min.quantum ‘256’ values to whatever works for you.

⚠️ If your system becomes unstable/unusable after applying these changes, try to open a terminal or login into a TTY (CTRL + ALT + F2/F3/F4…), delete the configs (rm -r ~/.config/pipewire) and restart.

Solution 2 (best for VMs probably)

If the above method didn’t work, you might have more luck with a solution to fix stuttering audio in VMs on Pipewire’s Troubleshooting wiki page, although I think at some point that was implemented directly into Pipewire since I haven’t noticed any stuttering audio no matter what VM software I use.

In any case, here’s how to apply the fix:

Either in /etc/wireplumber or ~/.config/wireplumber (create directories if they don’t exist), create a folder called wireplumber.conf.d.

Inside that folder, create a config file called 50-alsa-config.conf and paste the following into the file:

Afterwards, restart Wireplumber or re-login to apply the changes and try to replicate the problem.

Very VM specific fix

If you are fixing audio in a VM, also disable Firefox’s text-to-speech feature by going into the about:config page and changing the following values to false:

reader.parse-on-load.enabled
media.webspeech.synth.enabled

Conclusion

I seriously don’t understand why the first solution isn’t already all set by default. It could be just my weird early 2010’s “““gaming””” motherboard’s audio hardware or even because I’m using an NVIDIA card but whatever. At least I found a solution to that super annoying problem, and I hope it solves your problem too!

What’s this?

This is a convenient script that i made for when i install Ubuntu and want to get rid of Snaps, which i’m not a big fan of.

I don’t recommend using this script if you’re getting started with Linux and your first distro is Ubuntu. Snaps are usually good enough for newcomers to Linux but for me, i prefer Flatpaks much more than Snaps.

I haven’t touched the script in a while but i just tested it with 24.10 and it finished with no issues, so it should work.

What’s this?

My custom build scripts for creating a more complete Void Linux ISO. Can build a Cinnamon, XFCE and/or KDE ISO.

They don’t have much pre-installed but extra repos are preinstalled for stuff like NVIDIA drivers, Steam, Wine etc.

You need to be on Void Linux to build the ISOs. You can use a virtual machine or DistroBox.
