Inspiration

Our inspiration was our own experience in college. Theres so much freedom in college that makes it super easier to forget the new responsibilities we now have from living on our own. Point in case, spending. To help with this we have created a budgeter website as both a tool for budgeting, learning, and awareness. We hope the features of this website (info available upon hovering and general overview of all types of spending categories) will help the user really grasp the different elements there is to financial awareness, and provide a tool to target a specific area: spending.

What it does

This website takes the users input and preforms calculations to return how much they saved, and how much they have spent/will spend.

How we built it

We started by building the HTML framework which consisted of the questions grouped into sections. We made sure that you could input your information into the question answers. Then we used this input to preform calculations giving you information about you spending habits. These calculations were built in javascript through functions.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges we ran into was the calculations to give the user their results. We had a lot of functionality problems like issues with the functions not working when they were called, and the results not being printed properly. But after a closer look at our code, and a lot of time debugging, we were eventually able to correct the issue.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One part of this project that we are proud of is our collaboration. We worked well as a team to clearly communicate what needed to be done, and what had to be done. With this information, we were then able to easily divide the labor between us.

What we learned

One big thing we learned is the importance of organization. To make sure the calculations were correct, we had to use a large amount of variables. So during this process we very quickly realized the important of descriptive variable naming, and being purposeful with each variable chosen. Each variable was carefully selected with a goal in mind, any ones without a good use were trashed while we found another way to properly store the data.

What's next for Purrfect Budget

One of the points we wanted to expand on was the option for customization. For instance, for those who wanted to focus on saving, there would be an option to choose a 'preset' for this desired result. With this, in the money earned category you would get different advice and result outputs based on the savings preset. Furthermore, there would be other presets focused on different goals(spending money, debt-free, custom, etc). Another part we wanted to improve on was the calculations. The formulas would be better designed and better integrated within the code. We would also like to add in the option to save reports so users can see a history of their spending habits and their recommended advice.
