Inspiration
We were inspired by the theme of community and wanted to ground it in a real-world context rather than a generic social platform.
Uganda, my home country, has one of the youngest populations in the world and relies heavily on informal, community-based skills such as phone repair, tutoring, tailoring, and small business knowledge. However, these skills are often shared only through word of mouth, limiting access and opportunity.
SkillCircle was created to explore how technology can strengthen existing community networks rather than replace them.
What it does
SkillCircle is a mobile-first community platform that allows people to:
Post skills they can teach
Discover skills nearby
Exchange knowledge through paid work, volunteering, or skill-for-skill exchange
To improve accessibility, SkillCircle includes AI-assisted translation that converts key concepts into Luganda, helping local communities understand opportunities even when English fluency is limited.
How we built it
The project is built using:
React for the frontend
Node.js and Express for the backend API
The frontend and backend are deliberately separated to keep the architecture clean and scalable.
We intentionally avoided features such as authentication, payments, or chat during the hackathon to prioritise reliability, clarity, and inclusive access.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was designing a system that felt realistic for low-bandwidth and informal community settings.
We also had to balance language accessibility with technical feasibility, which led us to focus on translating key concepts rather than full sentences.
Additionally, maintaining a clean dark-mode UI while using native form controls required careful styling to preserve accessibility.

What we learned
We learned that designing for community means prioritising trust, simplicity, and cultural context over feature quantity.
We also learned how small technical decisions — such as architecture separation and accessibility-aware UI choices — can significantly affect usability and sustainability.

Expand language support beyond Luganda
Add community moderation and reputation systems
Introduce offline-first support
Deploy the platform for pilot testing in real communities
