Yes. New York launched the Online Pre-Licensing Course Pilot Program, allowing drivers aged 18 and older to complete the required 5-hour course entirely online through DMV-approved providers. The course includes 270 minutes of instruction across 9 modules covering traffic laws, defensive driving techniques, and the NY Vehicle and Traffic Law. You must have a valid New York photo learner permit before starting. There is no final exam. When you finish, your completion is reported electronically to the NYS DMV and you can schedule your road test without carrying a paper completion document. You must complete the course within 30 days of registering and take your road test within one year. Drivers under 18 must still take the course in a classroom.

You need the photo learner permit. The temporary paper permit you receive at the DMV office after passing the written test does not include a photo and will not be accepted. Your photo permit typically arrives in the mail about two weeks after you pass the permit exam. Wait for the photo permit before registering for the online course, because the DMV will not process your completion if your permit information does not match their records.

English is the only course language planned for launch. Any additional language version requires separate DMV review before it can be offered.

ELDT stands for Entry-Level Driver Training. It is a federal requirement set by the FMCSA that went into effect on February 7, 2022. You need ELDT if you are applying for a Class A or Class B CDL for the first time, upgrading from a Class B to a Class A, or obtaining a Hazmat, Passenger, or School Bus endorsement for the first time. The training has two parts: theory instruction and behind-the-wheel training. The theory portion can be completed entirely online through a provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. The behind-the-wheel portion must be completed in person with a registered provider. If you held a CDL or the endorsement you are seeking before February 7, 2022, you are exempt.

Yes. The theory portion of ELDT can be completed 100% online. The course covers vehicle operation, safety procedures, non-driving activities, and other topics required by 49 CFR Part 380. You must pass the theory assessment with a score of 80% or higher. There is no minimum number of hours required by FMCSA for the theory portion. When you complete the course, your training provider submits your completion to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry electronically. You then complete behind-the-wheel range and road training with a separate registered provider before taking your CDL skills test at the DMV. ELDT theory training completed online is valid in all 50 states.

A Class A CDL allows you to operate combination vehicles with a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, including tractor-trailers and most semi-trucks. A Class B CDL covers single vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, such as straight trucks, large buses, and dump trucks. The ELDT theory curriculum is different for each class. If you hold a Class B and want to upgrade to Class A, there is a separate upgrade course. Choose the course that matches the CDL class you plan to test for.

In most states, yes. Completing a state-approved defensive driving course online can qualify you for an insurance discount of 5% to 15% on your auto insurance premium, typically lasting three years. Some states like New York mandate that all insurers offer a 10% discount to drivers who complete the course. Other states leave it up to individual insurance companies. Requirements vary by state, including course length (usually 4 to 8 hours), age restrictions, and whether the course must be taken voluntarily rather than court-ordered. In many states, yes. New York allows a reduction of up to 4 points through the Point and Insurance Reduction Program after completing a 6-hour course. New Jersey allows a 2-point credit once every five years. Ohio provides a 2-point credit. Indiana offers point credits through approved driver safety programs. Other states like Texas, Florida, Arizona, and Oklahoma allow ticket dismissal through defensive driving, which prevents points from being added in the first place. Each state has its own rules on how often you can take the course for point reduction and which violations are eligible. Completing a defensive driving course does not remove the violation from your record, but it can reduce the total points counted toward license suspension.

The planned NY OPL course uses phone verification codes, personal security questions, content questions, and typing-pattern timing at identity checkpoints. Three consecutive checkpoint failures disqualify the current enrollment; the student may re-register and restart from the beginning.

It depends on the course. For the NYS 5-hour online pre-licensing course, Enrollment is not open yet. DriverCourseOnline is awaiting final DMV launch approval. After a student successfully completes the approved course, we attempt to submit the completion electronically to NYS DMV immediately. NYS DMV says online completions are usually posted within 48 hours. Online students do not receive a paper MV-278 completion certificate. For ELDT and defensive driving courses, reporting rules vary by program and jurisdiction.
