Welcome to Kinolab

Our aim is to be the richest, most comprehensive collection of film and series clips available for non-commercial use in the United States, built from the ground up by the students and scholars using it.

Kinolab’s name comes from the Greek κινέω (kīnéō), which means ‘to set in motion’. We are a digital humanities laboratory dedicated to the analysis of moving images, with a focus on narrative film and media. A key part of our work is the ongoing development and support of our open-access digital platform for film analysis here at Kinolab.org, for use by the entire film and media studies community. The Collection tab above leads to hundreds of clips annotated to highlight distinctive examples of film form and content. Custom search functions allow users to find clips associated with a particular search term or even a combination of search terms.

Our research activities at Kinolab seek to advance the development of a film language data model.
