I haven't been checking in all that often but given Tumblr's chaos that is going to change. I will be checking here and pillowfort under the same name. I generally don't post that much but when I'm active I do read a lot on services I'm using (I seem to max out at two). I also have a twitter where I don't expect to post but if you see lappillus following you (two p's there, unlike elsewhere) that's me. I will be checking out followers on all three and trying to reconnect.

Currently still submerged in 2013ish Avengers fic (the more recent additions to canon go in directions that mostly go in places I'm not interested) The tumblr mess also got me thinking of previous migrations and I've been having fun digging up ancient XF, HL, and HP fic to read. It's nice to know that much of what I loved 20 years ago can still be found somewhere.

Safely home from Vividcon

We made it safely to Minneapolis last night after a long and fun weekend.

It was a very good VVC for me, despite the near complete lack of any of the things I'm currently (mildly) fannish about, name The Eagle of the Ninth and White Collar (although more discussions of the former than I'd have expected!) I'm delighted my body cooperated and actually let me spend time with people for the first time in three or four years (note to self: having dinner with folks BEFORE doing vid setup Thursday is definitely the way to go.) Not having vid in Premieres continues to be a good choice (on top of all the other Premieres issues faced by all those submitting, it's even more awkward when trying to arrange the show.)

Cleaning house for the new year

I just finished going through my DW circle, adding some folks who've migrated over here recently and cleaning out all the LJ accesses. I did not, intentionally, remove anyone from my circle who is on DW, so if I did by accident, or if LJ account access is important to you, please let me know. LJ has been left completely alone for now, and almost everything that isn't service specific is still being mirrored on those occasions I do get something posted (hey, I'll at least have something to post re: Festivids next month). As always feel free to change your association with my various accounts at any time. If you get a DW account and are either moving over here for the most part I'd love to know.

Notes: When I started this vid I hadn't intended to do it for the Challenge show, it was just a vid that had sprung nearly fully formed in my head when listening to stuff from the dark and dusty depths of my music collection (How could I have forgotten about a song where a guy sells himself to save his brother? Not to mention all the other imagery lining up.) As I started to work on it, however, it started looking very much like what I did back at the start of my vidding career in the days of VCR vidding, both stylistically and thematically so I decided that it would be fun to try doing it with the same limitations that I'd had as a VCR vidder - longer clips, no tweaking of them, tweaking of music limited to cutting and fades (I had scary tech as a VCR vidder - I had a little black box that would let me fade both audio and video, something otherwise out of reach of most vidders). And as such, I had a blast doing it.

Vividcon: The Return

eReader Questions or my friends know EVERYTHING

I'm pondering acquiring an ebook reader of some flavor and have narrowed it down to the following four and hope that the collective intelligence can help me narrow it down.

Kindle G3

This is the one that got me pondering; if it had been in stock when I was visiting my parents up in Maine last month and stuck with 1994 era connection speeds I'd have ordered one and just experimented. It's connection could not have been slower (seriously, it was maxing out at 26.1 kps).
Pros: excellent connectivity - the current 3g setup is almost enough to sell it in itself if you folks can convince me the web browser works well enough for reading lj/dw and gmail. Good syncing with multiple devices
Cons: heaviest of the lot, no native ePub support. No expandable storage. I seriously dislike the control Amazon retains over content you've paid for and I dislike their ebook pricing policies so I am reluctant to give them money and encourage bad behavior.

What I need to know: How well does the browser work, especially for dw/lj and Gmail? How well does it work if running on EDGE rather than 3G (My folks' place is outside of G3 range but if it's better than 26 kps, it's still a winner)? Have you managed to use it with any ePub library books? If so, how much of a pain was it to convert? How about Adobe DRM?

Pocketbook 301+

Pros: sounds like it's the most customizable, has the greatest flexibility in formats and possibly the best reading experience of the lot. Lightweight for this size screen. Expandable storage

Cons: not in stores so can't look at myself, bad connectivity, neither touchscreen nor keypad so anything involving typing difficult. Most expensive of the ones I'm looking at.
What I need to know: What's it actually like in person? Is the lack of friendly input devices too frustrating or do the customization options work? How's the audio?

Pocketbook 360

If connectivity weren't an issue, and it is as good as looks in specs, I suspect this is the one I'd go with.
Pros: Small (I like small and don't mind reading on small screens. I've enjoyed novel length fic on small smartphone and pda screens without a problem). Lightest weight of the lot (big plus since I will probably mostly have to use all of these one handed.) Excellent customization and variety of formats. Included hard cover - it looks like it could survive in my pocket and withstand hostile attacks from my keys (they've killed multiple phone screens). Small size means I'm most likely to causally bring it with me since I tend to only carry things in pockets as backpacks and purses frequently hurt with my fibromyalgia. Expandable storage.
Cons: Possibly too small and not in stores for me to be able to test in person. Relatively expensive. Lousy connectivity. Pretty purely an ebook reader, no audio, browser etc.
What I need to know: What's it actually like in person? Is the lack of friendly input devices too frustrating or do the customization options work? Is it actually too small? How well does the accelerometer page turn work? How well does the cover work?

Sony PRS-350 Pocket

This is the only one of the four I've actually had my hands on. It was fine but didn't wow me.
Pros: Best input of the lot. Good range of formats. Small and light. Marginally less expensive than the others.
Cons: Lousy connectivity. Only OK customization. Judging from photos, least easy to read of the lot.
What I need to know: What, other than price, makes this one a winner?

So if you have any experience with any or all of the above I'd love to hear about it. In summary, things I'm concerned about:

$250 is my max
I like things that are versatile and customizable (this includes connectivity, formats, displays, buttons, etc)
Ergonomics and usability trump visual style - I need something that is light enough to support one handed, or easy to read propped on my lap.If it feels nice in the hand is more important than if it is sexy.
Durability is important - I am very hard on things, even when I try not to be.
I would like access to fanfic, library books and commercially published fiction
Being a viable way of checking journaling sites and Gmail would be a huge plus. I hope to use it on the bus and, if it's generally capable, at my parents who have AWFUL internet connectivity.

Out on the edges of the digital universe

I'm currently enjoying a lovely, long vacation with my folks at our place on the coast of Maine. Unfortunately the connectivity is that of circa 1994 (seriously, I'd be DELIGHTED with a 54K connection right now - it'd be twice as fast as my current.) So I will probably not be on much for the next couple of weeks. I will be checking email if you want to get a hold of me, but longer single emails are the way to go rather than short ones. If anything exciting happens in your world or in the wider world that you think I should know about please email, since I probably won't be checking my lj or dw reading much if at all. If Kindle G3s were in stock they'd actually have a customer even given how much I LOATHE Amazon's DRM, ability to look at and take back things they've sold and ebook pricing policies. sekrit note to epee: email me the docs - downloading dropbox is proving a pain and gdocs hates this connection.

Sorting out life

First, LJ's latest shinnanigans have reminded me that I've been meaning to sort out my reading on LJ and DW. If you are posting either primarily on DW or crossposting consistently between DW and LJ, it would help me if you'd comment - I don't want to accidently leave someone off my LJ reading list. At this point I'm not defriending anyone, nor am I ceasing to crosspost, and neither am I consolidating comments, so from the outside this will look no different. I'm just trying to avoid duplicate entries and given the link highjacking I'd definitely rather be clicking over on DW than LJ if there's an option. In the unlikely event that someone reading this wants a Dreamwidth invite, they are readily acquired for free at dw-codesharing.dreamwidth.org. If there aren't any unused codes there let me know and I'll see what I have available.

I'm also trying to get rid of STUFF. I have a sales post up on fatshonista if any of you are interested in 2X-3X clothing or just want to be amused by my wardrobe. I'm going to be attacking another closet in just a bit (for some reason it's much easier on sunny days than grey, gloomy ones. Hurray for less clutter!

Emerging from hibernation

Um, hi! I suddenly realized that I haven't posted anything in my own journal this year. Oops! So here is a brief summary of the state of me:

Health:

Basically good, barring low energy from my fibro, a repeatedly twisted right ankle (hurray for good ankle braces - it's not been a problem since I got this one), and annoyingly bad air quality this winter (usually we have maybe two air quality warnings a winter, this year we had 28). No major illnesses have cropped up, and I've even managed to miss or quickly sleep off most of the bugs going around the office.

Work:

I'm employed and enjoying it! I've been temping at a department of the University of Minnesota and since late August and will probably be there until the first of September this year. The pay's not great and it starts too early, but otherwise I've been having a ball. I like my coworkers very much and they seem to like me. There's a nice mix of easy routine and interesting oddness with long spells where I'm free to entertain myself (front desk sorts of jobs are great with fibro - they're the sort of thing I can do when I'm fuzzy or sore relatively easily). I have WINDOWS! Which look out onto the central mall of campus and which almost always shows something interesting. So, other than the whole temp issue and starting at 7:45 it's great. Also, it's a very easy commute. The limited stop bus stops two blocks from my house and about a block from my office.

Life Generally: Is good but doesn't seem to be provoking me to comment. Hmm, maybe I should start with linkspam's again and see what happens. My parents are in good shape and are way busier than I - looking at their life I don't think I'll ever have the energy to retire.. The house is messier than I'd like, but improving (there's nothing like dealing with someone else's mess to make one inspired about one's own.) I'm currently enjoying a historical romance reading binge while commuting.

Fannishness:

I'm still enjoying SPN, but mostly for itself and not for fic. I'm mostly reading gen fic in the fandom at this point, with a lot of preseries stuff and the occasional casefile. The fandom is beginning to wear on me in ways similar to HP fandom wore on me before I bailed. I'm sure I'll be around through the end of the season, but at this rate I'm not sure about next year. I'm still enjoying CSRPS, but I'm back to my beginnings with mostly wanting wild AUs. I'm still having a blast with those.

Leverage is still a happy place for me, but it's not a terribly fannish space. I'm not finding the sorts of stories I want (I'd like some good, juicy casefiles and those seem few and far between with or without sex, and I'd happily take most combinations) and so far no other vid ideas have grabbed me.

White Collar is seems to be where I'm reading most these days, even tho the show rides very close and frequently falls over the line on my embarrassment squick. I got pulled in by [Bad username or unknown identity: china_shop 's] vid "The Boy Feels Strange" and watched all of the first half of the season in January. Frequently in 30 second to 3 min chunks because that's all I could take. I adore the regular characters and am having fun with all sorts of fic, although oddly, Peter/Neal is the least interesting to me - I just really want Elizabeth in there too, I guess.

Vidding is actually happening. For ST reboot. There are clips on a timeline. There are at least a couple more of them than there were yesterday. There are other songs that are waiting impatiently for me to finish (although I think most of those I want to wait until the end of SPN's season).

DW and LJ:

I'm moving my primary reading over to DW (I use them for reading feeds, and a couple of weeks ago I transfered all of them.) I'll probably be posting a poll in a couple of weeks to find out who's consistently crossposting the same stuff in both places in an effort to make a reading filter on lj to simplify my online life. At the moment, I'm still planning on crossposting everything of substance (there may be occasional site specific posting for site specific reasons but that should be it) and I'm not currently inclined to consolidate comments. In any event, it's unlikely to look very different to anyone, especially since I'm not planning on actually defriending anyone (hey, I want access to comments independent of journal!). If any of this changes I'll mention it before I do.

I had the great good fortune to snag the story that got me interested in doing this challenge. I have loved poisontaster's A Kept Boy
from the first chapter and was delighted with darkrosetiger and telesilla's expansion of the 'verse, so the chance to play in an AU of their story was a joy. Even if it did make me figure out political poster styles.

I don't usually go for corporate sponsored "good deeds" sorts of websites. They're usually thin on info and rather dull in design and certainly not something I'd recommend anyone going to poke around at. Haagen-Dazs' helpthehoneybees.com site is an exception to both. I've been following the discussion on plight of honeybees and colony collapse disorder for a couple of years now. This site does a good job giving a good summary of what is and isn't known and giving the reader some sense of how it effects them personally (it's really interesting to see which ingredients are directly impacted by bees). It also has footnotes. And what looks like a pretty good science team behind it. Check out the press kit link for more specifics. They also have good suggestions of what to do that don't involve the company.

As for the design, I'm also quite fond of it. It's fun, with unobtrusive and subtle but quite impressive animations of plants growing, flowering and fruiting while tiny bees fly around.

Go, learn stuff, enjoy interesting web design, do something to save the bees.

Jackie and I are safely home from VIvidcon and heresluck and twocats are both off on the final legs of their trip home.

I had a lot of fun despite being sick (I hope I manged to not pass it on to anyone at the con) and despite the inevitable tech issues. I should have the three (!!!!!) vids I premiered there up shortly.
