Human

A series tracing the development of our species, from early hominin life to homo sapiens.

Harnessing the latest scientific breakthroughs, presenter Ella Al-Shamahi explores how we came to be one of the most dominant species on earth in this landmark BBC series.

We created over 60 minutely detailed shots, working alongside photogrammetry specialists Sample and Hold to build four avatars representing different species of human.

Using data provided by scientists and archaeologists, we ensured that all digital avatars were anatomically and physiologically correct, with an extensive model refinement process transforming the raw scans into accurate digital models. A combination of Maya and Nuke was used to create the CG avatars.

We also built animated maps and timelines demonstrating the migration patterns of early humans, an essential device to trace the development of homo sapiens.

Our comp team handled a large number of CG and digital matte painted set extensions in Nuke, including augmented atmospheric effects. Digital doubles and green screen footage were integrated into principal photography to create scale and dramatic reconstructions supporting the cinematic vision.
