Meet the self-proclaimed “nutter who thinks he’s King Arthur”.

The United Kingdom's Emperor Norton.

At the Royal Command performance of Daisy Campbell's Cosmic Trigger Play, performed in 2017 at the Cockpit Theatre, Marylebone, London, we see here members of the cast hanging out with our hero, Arthur Pendragon, Druid King of Britain.

Some months back Hilaritas Press received an extremely well-crafted letter from CJ Stone, British journalist and author. On the 23rd anniversary of the telling of the tale of the UK's most current King Arthur, CJ was interested in having Hilaritas Press republish the amazing story of the biker who would be king.

Discordians in the UK, in plays, festivals and books, seem to be bringing the ideas and zany proceedings of Kerry and Greg's Discordian visions into a modern interpretation that includes ceremony and frivolity. Bill Drummond, Jimmy Cauty, Alan Moore, Daisy Campbell, John Higgs and others have all contributed to this revival. On a parallel front, we have Druids and environmental activists protesting roadways destroying nature, and the British authorities disrespecting the efforts of Druids to celebrate their festivals in sacred spaces like Stonehenge.

On the forefront of these activities is a biker who changed his name to Arthur Pendragon and became an ardent defender of nature and the spiritual rights of Druids. The story that unfolds in The Trials of Arthur brings gonzo journalism to Arthurian legend. It's a wild ride. When Hilaritas Press editors read the book, we were hooked. The prose is very well-written, and the story is a delight. Arthur's earnest and heartwarming endeavors to lead a movement of noble knights on a modern quest seems like an absurd idea that nonetheless gains speed as the courts of the UK decide in their favor, and the combined Druid tribes of Britain unite to acknowledge this new Arthur as their king. "So unbelievable, it might just be true." says Kindred Spirit magazine. Alan Moore declares, "A magnificent document." Deborah Orr of The Guardian writes, "The Trials of Arthur is the amazing story of one singular man. But it is also the inspiring tale of an unjustly maligned British counterculture. Searching, funny, intelligent and illuminating, it is on one level a rip-roaring read, whimsical and compelling, and on another a haunting elegy to all those people who refuse to accept that they cannot make a difference in a world they know must change."

When I think of Arthur and these new tales of a once and future king, I think of Emperor Norton, who in 1859 declared himself the Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico. Norton was also a "nutter" but just like our Arthur, he was beloved by people. Citizens of San Francisco at the end of the 19th century loved the idea of a benevolent self-proclaimed leader who seemed very odd to many, but loved and respected for his deeds and proclamations for city improvements and promoting civil rights.

I also think of Oberon Zell, who read Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land, and took the book's fictional church, The Church of All Worlds, and turned it into a modern Pagan religion. Robert Anton Wilson was friends with Oberon, and wrote many articles for his New Age magazine, Green Egg. I suspect RAW would equally love the modern Arthur Pendragon, for many of the same idealistic reasons.

The new Hilaritas Press edition of The Trials of Arthur, enhanced with photographs and new material, will be released on Maybe Day, July 23rd, 2026.
