As did each of the Austenesque variations by Kelly Miller – and I have read them all – this one provided me with a delicious escape from reality to the elegance of the Regency era. Upon opening the first page, I was transported from the bleak November to the candlelit dining rooms and rose gardens of British gentry.

“The Impoverished Orphan” by Kelly Miller offers an interesting departure from the original story by removing Elizabeth’s family from the scene. In this variation, a disease takes the lives of the Bennets, Lizzy’s parents and her elder sister, and she is raised by her mother’s friend’s family. Does it mean that without the loud and spoilt younger sisters and an often uncivil mother, it is easier for Elizabeth to present herself to potential suitors in a more favourable light? As it happens, being penniless alone is a potent enough obstacle to doom a young woman’s prospects for marrying a noble gentleman with means.

Even though Lizzy enjoys a comfortable life and the Bartons treat her well, still, the moment arrives when she must learn that money does matter. And she learns it through a bitter experience of having to part with something – or I should probably say someone – that is very precious to her.

As someone who adores horses and for whom horse riding equals meditation, relaxation, the most profound educational process, and much more, I appreciated the way the author portrayed the relationship between people and horses. She has done justice to the special bond that forms between a horse and a human being. Those who experienced it know that it resembles magic.

One other thing that I truly enjoyed was a more nuanced relationship between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. I think that every true fan of the legendary couple shares my yearning for more scenes with the two of them in the original.

This is the first of many wonderful nuances from the original Pride & Prejudice. Unlike the original, Lizzy’s family has been removed from the story, thus making her an orphan. Her Uncle and Aunt Barton have taken her in to live with themselves and their two children: Noah and Cassie.

Five years later, Lizzy’s life is very different. Both her aunt and her expected newborn passed away in childbirth. While her uncle is kind and cares for her, the once happy home is filled with sadness. Adding to Lizzy’s worries is news that the inheritance she thought her father left her was poorly invested, leaving her penniless. Author Kelly Miller has painted a somewhat hopeless picture for young Lizzy, but in wonderful plotting, she leverages the despair even further. Lizzy discovers that her adopted family are not actually blood relatives.

This backstory may seem long-winded, but I assure other readers that it is a delicious gossipy piece of work that you just want to curl up and devour. Poor Lizzy! I kept reading with anticipation of what would become of her as she reached marrying age and becomes acquainted with Mr. Darcy.

What ensues is drama, love, and even a murder mystery within the village. The interconnectivity between the characters creates a delightful retelling of Pride & Prejudice in this Regency novel. I look forward to reading more of Kelly Miller’s re-tellings.

I really wanted to love this book, for the romance plotline and the Pride and Prejudice reference/homage/retelling. I thought it had a strong beginning with Elizabeth being an orphan and going to live with the Bartons. But the writing style was so archaic that it was hard to get into. I'm picky about my classics or anything in that style.

It’s not on the author, it’s on me. I used to be able to easily enjoy this style of writing, but everything moves so fast these days and sometimes it’s more relaxing to read a story where even the smallest body language cues or actions on the page aren’t written in the long-form of description.

With that said, I did however enjoy the mystery and the ending. That kept me going even when I felt like the writing itself was a bit dense. I liked Darcy's POV more.

I think it can jump out a lot more if the writing is simplified and we have a hint of more danger, but I do understand the appeal of stories like these is that they are slow and NOT dangerous

This is the second Jane Austen-esque/Pride and Prejudice variation book I’ve by Kelly Miller, and it does not disappoint. It is such a fun escape into the regency era of society, but this one places Elizabeth Bennet in even more humble beginnings. Lizzy’s family has passed away from a disease and she is being raised by the Barton’s, family friends/“aunt” and “uncle”. Lizzy is told she doesn’t have much in the way of a dowry, so to not expect to have a match like the one her “cousin” will get. Of course she meets Mr. Darcy, and after she is initially predisposed to dislike him, their relationship grows and is well written and nuanced. There is also a little mystery thrown into the storyline, but like a few other of the comments, I enjoyed the romance aspect more than the mystery. Overall a well done Pride and Prejudice alternative that fans of this genre would enjoy.

I must admit this story was different than the usual P&P variations but it was kind of so so. It was a little weird from the way Elizabeth was treated to the way her guardian was treating her. But I did finish it.

With Elizabeth and Darcy, Jane Austen's beloved characters always central to her stories I love the way author Kelly Miller contrives to show us readers that no matter the circumstances, no matter what happened in their lives Elizabeth and Darcy were meant to be together. In a world that is ever changing we need something to depend on, and I love that whatever the adventures of Elizabeth and Darcy, Kelly Miller will always ensure that they are together in the end.

When I saw the title of this book, I wondered who the Impoverished Orphan would be. Surprise of surprises in the beginning itself I discovered that it was Elizabeth. I wondered how the story would flow without the irritating, overbearing mother, the protective but socially awkward father and minus the gaggle of sisters? But that's where Kelly Miller proves her adroitness and creative mettle where she builds a touching tale of a young child who is not quite abandoned but not quite accepted either. With a seasoned touch the author deftly builds a world where Elizabeth is told she is loved and cherished but at the same time made to feel the cold touch of a poor relation and an outsider.

Only once we understand Elizabeth and her world does Darcy make an entrance.

And the author has further livened up the plot by introducing a murder. With a murder there are bound to be suspects and as Darcy investigates the reader wonders with dread if Elizabeth has been raised by a murderer?

In the end all problems are resolved, and Elizabeth gets the happily ever after she deserves but not because she is seeking a rich suitor or an opportunity to better her circumstances but because she is true to herself and doesn't hide her feelings.

A much-awaited sublime read and a rightly won 5 stars .

As a fervent believer in reincarnation I believe Jane Austen has returned as Kelly Miller and is living in the USA, despite this she has retained absolute command of the 19th Century English language and style. Kelly Miller uses her characters beautifully and places Miss Elizabeth in different circumstances with clever and witty soil Darcy and Georgiana do not change very much but often their circumstances and background details alter, this is why all of Kelly's books are original, romantic and full of excitement and interest. in my opinion The Impoverished Orphan is the best so far of an excellent set of books by this author and can stand comparison with Jane Austen's six novels.

In this novel, Elizabeth is an orphan who lives with the Barton family and has no dowry or great marriage prospects. She has a good relationship with her guardian and is fond of Lily, a horse she trained.

Darcy spots Lily, believes her to be a perfect horse for his sister Georgiana and on impulse buys the horse from Mr Barton. Needless to say, Elizabeth resents him for this act. However, Darcy is gentle and likable, and Elizabeth is a ray of sunshine, and they are slowly warming up to each other. The romance feels so natural!

This book was a pleasure to read. It has an interesting plot, secrets that need to be revealed, beautiful language and an atmosphere of the elegant era.

I enjoyed it.

Having already read four of Kelly Miller’s Pride and Prejudice variations, I knew what to expect. Miller’s writing, as with her other novels, is a pleasure to read not least because she is careful to reflect the period her books are set in—namely Regency England. As in her other novels, the language, dialogue and setting are authentic—testament to Miller’s passion in Austen’s beloved and enduring classic. I am impressed with her ability to create so many variations from one story and I can only imagine that Miller’s fascination with the two characters enabled her to construct so many alternative storylines. As with the original, there are misunderstandings and obstacles to overcome before Elizabeth and Darcy unite. If you are a fan of Austen or simply appreciate a well-written story, then ‘The Impoverished Orphan’ is for you. Meanwhile, I look forward to reading more of this talented author’s work.
