Move from Azure CDN to Cloudflare Pages

Migration from Azure CDN to Cloudflare Pages Background I was informed over and over the last few weeks about the imminent closure of Azure CDN by Edgio.
I mostly didn’t care and was going to let them try to migrate for me. But when I published the earlier page today about my Ikea Tradfri Button Fun, I noticed that the good ol’ key expired.
So. Since this site is barebones and since I spent 2024 trying a handful of services from Cloudflare because Google Domains sold out, I decided to try setting up pages on Cloudflare too.

Home Assistant crosses VLAN for Matter over Thread

For Christmas, someone got me an Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2. It’s a Matter over Thread device. The first one I have. The only other Matter devices I have so far are Matter over Wi-Fi (Nanoleaf Essentials Holiday String Lights) and two Wi-Fi-connected-but-Thread-gateways in the form of Nanoleaf Shapes.
When I attempted to pair it with my Home Assistant… it couldn’t correctly pair with the device.
After like 7 tries… I went to the Internet.

M5Stack Atom Echo Setup into ESPHome

Background So I want voice assistants, but I don’t want to send all my data to either Google or Amazon. Fortunately, Home Assistant called 2023 their Year of Voice and worked a lot on voice last year. Instead of dealing with it being half-baked all year, now that it’s 2024… I’m going to try it out.
I’m following Home Asssistant Blog’s $13 assistant blog post.
I went and bought one of these things from M5Stack.

OPNsense IPv6 tunnel with Hurricane Electric TunnelBroker

Background My ISP, Ziply Fiber, still doesn’t support IPv6. It’s been talked about a lot on reddit over the past few years and folks have been nagging the nice folks at Ziply about it… but for reasons that I’ve basically determined are “they inherited a gigantic turd from Frontier Communications and further Verizon” are what the hold up is. Also that the demand for IPv6 is pretty low. (They will give it to you if you buy 10gig service… but as badly as I want that… I have no reason and no equipment with which to go above 1 gig).

OPNsense with Let's Encrypt and IONOS

I’ve tried a few different ways of getting SSL certificates onto OPNsense including using the one provided by IONOS as a part of my domain. Which is mostly fine. Until the annual renewal comes up.
It’s also a wildcard certificate which worked okay for all my other services.
Except I decided to add another level of hierarchy to my internal domains so each router/location would have its own device.location.domain.com instead of every device being device.

Lo and behold the key in the KeyVault expired for the site.
Here’s how I fixed it.

rclone container in Docker on Synology DSM7

I’ve been using Synology’s in-built Cloud Sync for a while, but I noticed a few things about it today:
It seems to use an incredible amount of resources on the box It won’t let me add the same account twice so I can sync one particular thing to two places It’s missing Google Photos support (which I’m looking at for my Photoprism organization project) So I’ve decided to give rclone a try or at least get it installed.

Kittens Game

I don’t know why I’m doing this again. I’m a sucker for idle games I guess.
I decided to play Kittens Game again. I’ve been playing other crappy idle games on my phone on and off for a while. But I remember this one with a fondness. I played the Paperclips one again earlier this year but it lasts like a day. I think maybe it’s just a resurgance of having some stupid low-stakes fun that I used to do before the pandemic.

Okay, so I put it up in 2020. And then in some mix of depression, angst, anxiety, and just general blahs… I didn’t really touch this thing save for a post about Home Automation. I didn’t take it down either.
But as we head into 2024, I’m feeling a lot better than I have in years and I think it’s time to actually write. Definitely a more efficient, productive, and calming use of my time than endlessly doomscrolling on Reddit.

Okay, so I know the entire point of taking a vacation is to not work. But I couldn’t get this bug of an idea out of my head the entire time. Or at least for the first week or so until I got some code out of it.
Background At work, I’ve had this issue where we’re trying to keep track of a TON of file system paths in a relational database.

In the last few months, Home Assistant added a new feature to display Energy usage in a pretty dashboard. However, it wasn’t clear to me how to get the data from my house into the tool.
I spent some time evaluating the energy add-ons trying to see what I could use to do it. I basically came up with CT Clamp sensors (little devices that snap around the wires and measure current to calculate total power).

Well. This was intended to be my first post when I initially created this site. In 2020. During the pandemic. Not sure what I was thinking.
So since motivation was high enough to try Hugo but not high enough to actually solve everything, this page languished until late 2021/early 2022. And then somehow when things finally got normal enough for me, I put some effort back into finishing the setup and here we are.
