There needs to be a quiz going around that isn't all about relationship stuff. Not that I'm against relationships, but, well, it gets annoying when you come across about 10 questions about relationships, and they're almost invariably about straight ones. :/

First up, happy 4th to everyone who celebrates it!

World History According to Undergrads. A bunch of awesome TAs and graduate instructors compile howlers from undergrad students doing history papers. "In the 1930s, lots and lots of people were really depressed." Sheer brilliance, I say. :)
I've been listening to some songs from Janelle Monáe's The ArchAndroid a lot lately. Yeah, I know, everyone's talking about her, but everyone's talking about Lady Gaga, too, and Kerry certainly feels the urge to rave about her, so why can't I talk about Janelle Monáe? Seriously, "Faster" and "Cold War" are the catchiest things ever. I've had "Cold War" on loop, because I SUCK like that.
I think John Hodgman is a fucking genius. As I said in my "50 Things About Me," I love his fake facts. We've got More Information Than You Require, and it's amazing. He's so charmingly convincing. I also love listening to his interviews—he's quite intelligent and witty, in a dry, deadpan way. I kind of have one of those cerebral crushes on him. Does anyone else have "cerebral crushes"? I tend to get them a lot, because I'm an annoying sapiosexual. (:

Why the hell do so many people think that there is only ONE fucking “Black culture”?

Kerry, Hess, and I have been bitching about this for a little while, to be honest, because it’s an irritating stereotype that we’re honestly damn tired of.

To use an example that we’re personally familiar with, African American culture is different from Afro-Caribbean culture. Vastly different, I’d say, even though both African Americans and Afro-Caribbeans are descended from West African slaves. In the case of Afro-Caribbeans, the primary influences were the British, Spanish, and French; with African Americans, it was the American colonists. American and British culture had enough time to become distinct before the Revolution broke out, and they’re definitely distinct in 2011.

Mangled History Icons

Here are some "mangled history" icons, based on real assignments written by undergraduate students in history classes. Some of the quotations are from "World History According to Undergrads," and the rest are from the book Non Campus Mentis. The Non Campus Mentis quotations were collected from here. Most of the quotations are safe for work, although there is a mention of testicles on one of them. :P
