Good story and well written, great start, then usual bunch of rogues sent on a reconnaissance mission, manage, with a Partisan Leader who is not what he says, to take on impossible odds.

Couple of glaring errors, Sharpe should not be a Major at the time, and a main character killed in the book where he was promoted Major is alive and well again. Still enjoyed the book, just spoilt a little by those errors.

This book made a great Christmas gift for a Sharpe fan that had seen all the televised series but had never read the books. She was thrilled to receive it. The book arrived in perfect condition. The story line might be a bit formulaic by now, but for someone new to the book format stories, it’s a reasonable introduction. ✔️

I remember watching Sharpe when I was really too young to be doing so! Later I discovered the books and have been hooked ever since. A great addition to the series with plenty of action, humour and risk. You won't go wrong reading this, and if it is your first Sharpe novel, read it and I'm sure you will go back looking for more.

May 1812 and the Peninsula War on the border between Portugal and Spain. A bridge at Almaraz is a key link between two French armies and destroying it will be a key factor to enable British success. Sharpe and his band of loyal and cunning riflemen are sent on reconnaissance but of course end up playing a key role in the conflict to come.

Odd this. The author surprisingly gets a bit wrong on his own Sharpe chronology, including his rank and various characters, how much this will irk you will depend on how immersed you are in the journey of Sharpe and his timelines.

But is it a short, fun and easy read. Not much character conflict and a very comfortable relationship between Sharpe and his men. No great bad guys or major twists but it is always nice to have more Sharpe, even if the author is slightly off his game with this one.

Hmm. SHARPE'S COMMAND is, I think, the weakest of the series yet, and although it's sad to admit it, it doesn't have the magical effect of earlier novels in the series, even the ones Cornwell added in this century. This book is Cornwell on autopilot, delivering a rather generic story about battling the French for control of a river in northern Spain. There's a pantomime villain, characters acting more like caricatures, and more continuity errors than you can shake a stick at. More problematic for me as a reader is the book's repetition, even at this short length: Sharpe repeatedly faces death only to be saved at the last minute by an unexpected arrival (I call this the 'Gandalf effect' after Jackson's LORD OF THE RINGS), and dialogue and thought is regularly repeated throughout. There are even a few anachronisms thrown in (Sharpe randomly calling his men guys) which I've never noticed before in a Sharpe book. It's superficially enjoyable as an action-adventure story, but it's not a keeper.
