I'm excited to announce the official Nullschool app is here! earth.nullschool.net on mobile browsers works fine, but the app is nicer. Full screen display, persistence across sessions, text size that matches device settings. And, like the website: no ads! Links below ⬇️

earth.nullschool.net was launched 10 years ago today! 🎉 At the time, I couldn’t have imagined the longevity and impact this project would have. To all the users and fans over the years: thank you. And with this anniversary, an announcement:

This was much harder than I thought. Full year 2018 time lapse animation of surface winds... in 4K! (But you need to visit YouTube for full res: youtube.com/watch?v=obsw9q…)

To celebrate the 5 year launch anniversary of earth.nullschool.net, there's now a date selector dialog to quickly jump back in time to see historical wind data. It's all there, every three hour step at every pressure level, since launch on Dec 9, 2013.

earth.nullschool.net has a new UI starting today! This was quite the journey. What started as a small project to refresh the menu turned into a deep rewrite of nearly the entire site. Many improvements were made and annoyances fixed. There are some new features, too. 😉

New feature added to earth.nullschool.net: the aurora! Or rather, probability of visible aurora. Produced by OVATION model operated by SWPC / NOAA. Special thanks to @StephHamy820 for writing the data processing script! earth.nullschool.net/#current/space…

I’ve decided to dedicate myself full time to earth.nullschool.net. There is much work to do! In particular, I’m going to explore ways for the site to help fight climate change. More on this in the near future. It’s been an amazing 10 years. Here’s hoping for 10 more. 🎉

Time lapse animation of precipitable water for all of 2019. The band of moist air stretching along the equator corresponds to the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). It shifts north during N. Hemisphere summer and then south again during S. Hemisphere summer. (GFS model)

This is a short story about WebGL and how it exploded my brain a few years ago. For performance, I decided to re-implement the color overlay of earth.nullschool.net using a WebGL fragment shader.

Rebuilding the interface of earth.nullschool.net was more time consuming and difficult than I thought. Lots of new stuff and lessons learned. Going to build a thread of features/insights/pitfalls I encountered along the way. Maybe someone out there will find it useful.
