A University of Tennessee Professor with a PhD from University of New Mexico wins the Turing award two days after USNews announces their usual University rankings.
On this cue, I am beyond-excited to announce that I am joining the UC San Diego Department of Computer Science and Engineering @ucsd_cse as an Associate Professor this coming Fall. I will miss Madison and the great colleagues here, but looking forward to the new adventure ahead.
Stages of research:
1) Brickwall. Stuck, stuck, stuck... (>4 months)
2) Breakthrough. An idea that seems to work (1 month)
3) Polishing. Refine the idea till is clear an simple (>2 months)
4) Frustration. This idea is so simple, why did this take me so long

One of the greatest sources of disappointment in my life in the US has been the expectation I build up when people say:
"This was so much fun, we should do it again soon" or
"It's been so long, we should hang out soon"
They never mean it, and somehow I never learn from it.
