Atoms headed west to learn at the AI Engineer World's Fair in San Francisco last week. Attendees included Atomic developers and leaders from all four offices, among about 7,000 other enthusiasts. We went to see what's on the horizon in agentic engineering and check where our own process and thinking compare. Developer Jacob Williams said a couple of things stuck with him. "There's still a lot of flux around terminology and roles in the agent space," he said. "Hearing the same definitions surface across multiple talks was grounding. And the quality problem ("How do you get an agent to consistently do the right thing?") is something everyone in the room was wrestling with. Understanding how different teams are approaching it was worth the trip alone."

This year, Atomic Object turns 25. In the agentic engineering era, how teams teach and learn matters more than ever. That's on display in our Ann Arbor office today, where Renee Liken is moderating a lunchtime panel of some of our most senior developers — Matt Soto, Jake Silas, Kealy Williams, and Robert Bell — in an AMA format. Every spring, Ann Arbor’s getDowntown Program facilitates a Commuter Challenge that gamifies ways to get to work apart from driving solo. One delightful benefit of more bike commuting is more opportunities for after-work fun, like the Dexter group ride some Atoms went on last night. Atomic Object has joined the Innovation Alliance — a new statewide coalition connecting Michigan's investors, universities, corporations, founders, and startups so more companies can start, scale, and stay here. I'm personally involved with this because it resonates with my journey. I'm not a native Michigander. I chose to move here 15 years ago. When I returned to the US after 2 decades abroad, I chose Michigan. Not for the apparent reasons currently marketed by the state. I didn't really care about the natural beauty or the legacy of manufacturing. I ran the numbers. I had real connections. The economics made sense, and the relationships were important. Fifteen years later, both still hold: the connections have kept me in the state, and the economics continue to work for my company. The same case holds for any company looking to start or move here. That's why I'm in on the Alliance, and why I look forward to working with peers across the state to extend Michigan's reach nationally. https://lnkd.in/ewa_WPD5

Often, when women professionals come together for a meetup, it's to discuss the challenges and opportunities of being a woman in the workplace. But something special happens whenever we host the Ann Arbor Women in Health Tech meetup in our office. Dozens of women at every stage of their career show up and geek out about... health tech. That's it. Once a quarter, we get together, enjoy some good food and drinks, and build relationships across a shared enthusiasm for this field. Raleigh Devs: We're hosting Code Club for you. Software Consultant & Developer Jordan Booker started Code Club RDU this year with a straightforward goal. He wanted to create a space for Triangle developers to work on programming side by side. Since then, it's doubled in size and he's been hosting them every month in our space. Content includes coding challenges, lightning talks, and breakout sessions. We hope we see you at the next one on Thursday, June 5th in our beautiful downtown Raleigh office.
