Welcome to the JASE Medical Weekly Threat Assessment for May 15, 2026: https://lnkd.in/ewkfbQTq This week, Aaron Asay, DMSc, PA-C, FIBODM, FAWM, Executive Director of Jase Response puts on his professor hat for a deep-dive biological lesson on Hantavirus — what it is, why it's been in the news, and whether you actually need to worry about it. 🦠 Hantavirus 101 — What You Need to Know: 1. Hantavirus is endemic to the Four Corners region (Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico) and spreads through rodent droppings, urine, and saliva that get aerosolized and inhaled 2. Most people's immune systems handle it without illness — but if it progresses to severe pulmonary disease, it can be up to 30% lethal 3. It is a single-strand RNA virus (similar to COVID and Ebola) that mutates frequently — which is why public health officials watch it closely 4. It is NOT transmissible human-to-human in the US strains — with one known exception: the Andes strain from South America 🚢 The Cruise Ship Outbreak — 11 cases and 3 fatalities were linked to a cruise ship traveling from Argentina. The Andes strain is the only known Hantavirus that has shown limited human-to-human transmission, and contact tracing is still underway. This is not a pandemic-level event — it is self-limiting and poses no risk unless you had direct, close contact with symptomatic patients. 🌍 Travel Safety Reminder — Traveling doesn't make you invincible. Keep the same risk awareness you'd have at home. Wash your hands, practice normal hygiene, and stay aware of your surroundings — but don't go overboard. Over-sanitizing can actually weaken your immune system. ⚠️ Other Threats This Week: 1. Terrorism risk from lone wolves, radicalized groups, and embedded foreign actors remains unchanged 2. Wildfire, tornado, and hurricane season is ramping up — carry your EDC kit including a small power bank and charging cable at all times The bottom line: No need to panic. Travel, explore, enjoy the world — just do it with your eyes open. 💊 Build your travel and home preparedness kit at jase.com 🔗 Disaster response and community preparedness: jaseresponse.org
