UKRI NERC is the leading funder of UK environmental science.

About us

UKRI Natural Environment Research Council is the UK’s leading public funder of environmental science. NERC invests £330 million each year in cutting-edge research, postgraduate training and innovation in universities and research centres. Our scientists study and monitor the physical, chemical and biological processes on which our planet and life itself depends - from pole to pole, from the deep Earth and oceans to the atmosphere and space. We address and respond to critical issues such as environmental hazards, resource security and environmental change. Through collaboration with other science disciplines, with UK business and with policy-makers, we make sure our knowledge and skills support sustainable economic growth and public wellbeing - reducing risks to health, infrastructure, supply chains and our changing environment.

What will it take to deliver the next decade of UK R&D?     Following the publication of UKRI’s new five-year Strategy, we’re launching a new Substack series to explore this question. Leading voices from across the sector will share their perspectives on what the UK needs to do to continue building success in R&D.     First up, economist Lord Jim O’Neill argues that the UK needs to stop trying to please everyone by treating all regions alike. Instead, he says it should double down on backing places and institutions that can deliver world-leading R&D.     Lord O’Neill is Chair of Northern Gritstone, an investment company supporting university spin-outs in the North of England. He previously served as Commercial Secretary to the Treasury and as chief economist at Goldman Sachs.     Read the article and subscribe to our Substack to follow the series: https://lnkd.in/eKn4hBEM Image ©Gibson Kochanek
