Automatic Bandwidth Usage Alerts and Hard Spending Limits to Prevent Unexpected Charges
Render should provide proactive bandwidth usage alerts and configurable monthly spending limits to protect users from unexpected charges. The problem My Hobby workspace unexpectedly consumed more than 263 GB of outbound bandwidth against an included allowance of only 5 GB, resulting in approximately $38.55 in additional bandwidth charges. I did not receive any bandwidth warning that I could find in my Inbox or Spam/Junk folders. When I contacted support, I was advised to check my Junk folder, but no evidence of a successfully delivered warning was provided. The current approach relies heavily on users manually checking the billing dashboard. This is insufficient for preventing unexpected financial exposure, particularly when abnormal traffic occurs overnight or when users are not actively monitoring their applications. Requested features Automatic usage alerts: Send email notifications when bandwidth reaches 50%, 80%, 100%, and 150% of the included monthly allowance. Unusual traffic detection: Notify users when outbound bandwidth suddenly exceeds normal usage patterns. Configurable spending limits: Allow users to set monthly spending caps, such as $10, $20, or $50. Hard spending limits: Provide an option to automatically suspend billable services before additional usage charges exceed the configured budget. Real-time cost visibility: Show estimated bandwidth charges and projected monthly costs directly in the dashboard. Why this matters Usage-based billing should be accompanied by effective safeguards against unexpected financial liabilities. Developers should not have to manually monitor traffic every day to avoid accumulating charges they cannot afford. These features would improve billing transparency, cost predictability, and user control, especially for students, individual developers, and small projects. I hope Render will prioritize these safeguards to prevent similar situations for other users.
