ASAIO Fellow (FASAIO) Membership Application Process

The ASAIO Fellow designation recognizes the most accomplished individuals in the field of artificial organs. This prestigious title is reserved for those who have demonstrated exceptional achievement, sustained professional contributions, and a steadfast commitment to the mission of ASAIO.

Nomination Categories

Candidates are nominated under one of two distinct categories:

Inaugural Class of 2026

  1. Initiation & Nomination
The nomination process incorporates both peer-initiated and self-initiated pathways to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of professional and service-based merit.
    • Nomination by a Peer (Option 1): An application must be initiated by one (1) existing ASAIO Fellow in good standing.
    • Self-Nomination (Option 2): An application may be initiated directly by the candidate, which will prompt the ASAIO office to follow up for all necessary supporting documentation.
    • Nominator Criteria (Option 1): Peer nominators must provide a brief letter of support highlighting the candidates significant contributions to research, clinical practice, or innovation in artificial organ technology.
    • Affiliate Track Criteria (Both Options): For affiliate nominees (nurses, associates, industry partners), the supporting documentation or letter must explicitly detail their five-year history of organizational service, society roles, and professional impact instead of a publication count.
  2. Application Preparation
Once a nomination is received, the ASAIO Membership Committee assumes responsibility for the due diligence phase.
    • Portfolio Review: The Committee compiles and reviews the candidates professional dossier, focusing on their history with the Society, publication record, and impact on the field.
    • Vetting: The Committee ensures the candidate meets all eligibility requirements, including a minimum period of active membership and a proven track record of excellence.
  3. Review and Board Approval
Following a thorough review, the Membership Committee submits a finalized slate of candidates to the ASAIO Board of Trustees.
    • Final Sanction: Induction into the Fellowship requires formal approval by the Board.
    • Selective Standards: This merit-based review ensures that the FASAIO title remains a mark of distinction for the elite of the scientific community.
  4. Annual Election and Induction
The election of new Fellows occurs once per calendar year.
    • The Announcement: New Fellows are officially announced during a dedicated ceremony at the ASAIO Annual Meeting.
    • Joint Conferral: The announcement and presentation of certificates are conducted jointly by the Chair of the Membership Committee and the current ASAIO President.
  5. Expectations of Fellowship
Becoming an ASAIO Fellow is both an honor and a continuing responsibility.
    • Active Engagement: Fellows must maintain their active membership in the Society.
    • Ambassadorship: Fellows are expected to use the FASAIO title to promote the Societys values, mentor the next generation of scientists, and advance the global field of artificial organs.
  6. Maintenance and Revocation of Designation
The FASAIO designation is a continuous honor contingent upon maintaining the Society's standards.
    • Revocation Policy: The ASAIO Board of Trustees reserves the right to revoke the Fellow designation if a member fails to maintain professional standing, violates the Society's code of ethics, or if other circumstances arise that warrant the removal of this prestigious title.

FASAIO Eligibility & Vetting Criteria

To be considered for the rank of Fellow, a candidate must meet the following standards of professional excellence:

Special Provision for ASAIO Board Members

Current or incoming members of the ASAIO Board of Trustees who meet the 5-year membership and 40-publication requirements are eligible for automatic induction.

However, to maintain the prestige and peer-driven nature of the Fellowship, a formal nomination is still required. In this context, the nomination serves as a formal acknowledgment of the Board member's:

  • Continuing and exceptional support of ASAIO.
  • Commitment to maintaining active membership.
  • Leadership in upholding and advancing the Societys core values.

Special Provision for Allied Health Members

Allied Health Members (including nurses, physician assistants, technicians, and industry partners) who support the societys mission are eligible for induction into the rank of Fellow through an alternative path that emphasizes dedication over publication volume. To be considered under this provision, a candidate must fulfill the following modified standards:

  • Continuous Support of ASAIO: Minimum of five (5) years of continuous, uninterrupted membership.
  • Membership in Good Standing: Full compliance with all Society bylaws.
  • Active Participation & Roles: Proven engagement through leadership or committee service.
  • Impact in the Field: Demonstrated clinical, technical, or industrial excellence.

For Allied Health Member nominees, the formal nomination process must remain similar to the standard Fellow application process (self-initiated or peer-initiated), and must include a narrative that highlights the nominees five-year history of organizational support and field impact in lieu of a publication count or academic records.
